Re: JC Post Office - Be Very Afraid
Home away from home
Home away from home

I too live on 7th St and NEVER got the right mail. Maybe because my address has "1/2" in it and reading comprehension is not in the required skill set for the JC post office personnel? I happened to be coming out my apartment door while a mail person was delivering and I attempted to explain the house without the 1/2 in the address was next door but that seemed to throw her completely. I even pointed to the numbers on the outside of the building....no response whatsoever. I recieved the neighbors mail, and promptly delivered it myself. God knows where my mail wound up. wtf?

So I get sick of not getting mail and get a box at the UPS store. I attempted to have my mail forwarded in Oct 2008. For the first year I got about half my mail forwarded and half delivered to the house. Didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what was forwarded and what wasn't. And yes I know that alot of junk mail, and no catalogues are forwarded. So I go back to the post office to put in another forwarding request and they tell me my time has expired, they only do it for a year. I was like "hey it was never forwarded properly". Sucks for me, because they won't do anything. OK by now most of the important mail has the correct address but every once in a while......

I moved 3 times in Manhattan and it was never an issue.

I live on 7th.
My biggest problem with Maria's? BROKEN GLASS ALL OVER THE SIDEWALK. Every day. If Maria really gives a sh*t about her place, show some pride and sweep up. It's a mess outside.

Yes most of the patrons drive there, so I don't know that it's really a neighborhood bar. Nice to know they are driving around after a few drinks too.

And there are frequently people smoking/drinking outside, but I have to say I have never been disrespected by anyone no matter how late I've walked by.

I really do appreciate the info. I tried the NJ Transit trip planner and couldn't get anywhere. Normally that's a pretty good tool.

Transportation from JC to Ikea?

OK, I searched the message forums and I don't see anything about transportation from JC to Ikea in Elizabeth. The NJ Transit site sends you to Port Authority in Manhattan. Is that the only way?

I can't recommend NJ Certified Roofing. Had aroof done. Roof leaked 6 weeks later and was told not to worry about it because we had a warranty. Didn't think I'd need the warranty 6 weeks after the job was done, guess I'm crazy that way. Now we are told we need to stucco the chimneys to the tune of $1400. One would think that a roofer would have a clue and mention this in the estimate phase, not after the roof was installed. Supposedly it's the owner who does the installation and he didn't mention the chimney issue at that time either.

Got a much lower quote from Capitol and didn't go with them. Wish I did. Wish I went with anyone else at this point.

Carmine's is excellent. It's the closest to New York style pizza around here. Delenio is great for the super thin crust type. Pete @ Delenio makes a great calzone too.

$4-$5K is lower than average for a 1 bedroom. I'm on 7th and Brunswick and I looked up most of my neighbors taxes - it is a matter of public record - and we are all in the $6K range. Welcome to Jersey City.

And to the guy who said Newark Ave is becoming the new "it" spot: New restaurants opening daily? Newark Ave is grosser than ever, where the hell do you live?

Nobody mentioned that great big book store on Jersey Ave known as "the library".

Nevertheless the whole quirky independent book store thing won't work because there's not a big enough audience here. C'est la vie. Maybe when the real estate market bounces back and more people move in around here. I crack myself up.

I've been going there for a few months. I like it quite a bit.
Mall haircuts? eek. It's the first decent salon I've found outside of Manhattan.

Well put. One other thing to factor in is the tremendous property taxes in JC. I see that potentially slowing any recovery that may be on the horizon 4 or 5 or more years from now. The 400K roundtrip might not be that unrealistic.

I live on Brunswick near 7th. All I can say is that if you are used to the waterfront, this area is probably not for you. I bought here a year and a half ago, don't know if I would recommend it. It's not bad, just a little dodgy. With kids, I think you can do better.

Vintage stores? Yeah, that makes me want to move to a neighborhood.

Has anyone used Downtown Vets to get their dog's teeth cleaned? The quote was $300+ and I have a toy dog. It's worrisome in toy dogs because of the anesthesia. I like them overall, but should I suck it up and go back to Tribeca Vets where she's been anesthetized before?

All feed back is welcome!

I go to Downtown Vets. They want $500 -$600 to clean a pomeranian's teeth. Is that how much it is in JC? I used to go to Tribeca Vets when I lived in the city and they are notorious for being expensive.
