J CITY Theater presents: The God Committee
Home away from home
Home away from home

Let the games begin!
J CITY Theater announces their upcoming production: The God Committee, by Mark St. Germain. Opening night is Wednesday March 25th and the production runs Wednesday?s through Saturday?s at 8pm at The Underground Theater.
(at St. Michael?s Church, 252 9th Street, between Jersey Ave and Erie St.)
One heart, four transplant patients and a ticking clock. The God Committee is a medical drama full of high wire tension and crackling humor that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats for the entire evening. Issues of race, gender, and of course money are debated and argued while a newly harvested heart is racing toward the hospital. This group of medical professionals are forced to make tough decisions in this life and death debate.

Using his great talent of mixing high wire tension with fiery humor, playwright Mark St. Germain has created a charged work that keeps the audience in suspense for the entire evening. Alliances are formed, broken and reformed as the committee argues, accuses, debates and ultimately votes. And just when the matter seems to be decided, the playwright upends the proceedings with theatrical dynamite.

Audiences are encouraged to book tickets now due to limited seating and a limited run.

The God Committee
March 25 through April 4
Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8:00 pm
Tix: $20.00 ($15.00 for organ donors with proof of registration)
Tickets can be purchased through www.brownpapertickets.com or calling 800-838-3006

Re: Gaughan's Legacy!
Home away from home
Home away from home

For the sake of balance ? I?d like to chime in here. I?ve gotten to know Bill Gaughan over the past few years. I?ve found him to be knowledgeable, responsive, and supportive. Whenever I have asked him for any support, his answer has always been yes ? and he has always followed through on his promises. Yes, he is a supporter of our theater company and perhaps I am biased because of that. But I attend a lot of events in Jersey City ? getting our name out there, meeting people, etc. And I don?t think I?ve ever attended an event that he has not been at. He seems to be everywhere. Talking to people, listening ? trying to figure out ways to help. He is a successful business owner and a caring man who cares a great deal about his community and who is devoted a great deal of his life to making it better.

I?ll add this one story to illustrate my point. Last summer our theater company was invited to perform a play outdoors at Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken. Bill came to see the show. At the end of the play it began to rain and after we bowed ? all of the actors began to scramble to get the costumes, sets, and props up to the road to waiting trucks so that everything wasn?t ruined by the weather. In the midst of this chaos I look over and Bill Gaughan ? who is what?70 years old?has slung a huge set piece over his shoulder and hauling it up the steep steps. No one asked him to, he just saw what needed to be done and he jumped in and did it.

I am a home owner and business owner in Jersey City. I understand the concerns expressed here and I honor those who want to voice an opinion. But I also want to speak up and express my own experience with someone I?ve found to be working for a better Jersey City.

On December 4th, 2008 J CITY Theater will open ?A Tuna Christmas? by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard at The Underground Theater at the Church of St. Michael?s Church on Hamilton Park in downtown Jersey City. Performances run Thursday thru Saturday at 8pm. Audiences are encouraged to reserve tickets due to limited seating and a limited run. The show is scheduled to close on December 20th.

"A Tuna Christmas" is a marathon Christmas comedy of southern madness. The Christmas yard display contest is heating up in the small town of Tuna, Texas as neighbor fights neighbor for the most outrageous display of lights, Santa, Baby Jesus and Rudolph. This year, however, there is a Christmas Phantom on the loose, spreading vandalism and havoc. With quick-change zaniness and quicksilver one-liners, two incredibly talented actors introduce us to 22 of the wildest citizens in Tuna.

J CITY Theater first produced A Tuna Christmas in 2006 and is bringing it back this year for an encore run. ?We hope to make ?Tuna? a Jersey City holiday tradition?, says Clay Cockrell, Executive Producer. ?We had such a great time with it in 2006 and the audiences just loved it. Many people told us they were disappointed that we didn?t do it last year. We are always trying to listen to our audiences ? so here we go again!?

??Tuna? is one of the greatest shows for an audience,? explains Kellis Carroll, one half of the acting duo in A Tuna Christmas. ?No one expects to see so many characters

show up on stage. The bonus for an actor is being able to charge--full throttle--into so many personalities and have them live for a while.?

Sandy Cockrell, Artistic Director, said that this Christmas show is a wonderful celebration for the company. "We pride ourselves on our motto: theater in the raw. As a production team our focus has always been on the actor and the purity of each particular story with minimal sets and costumes. However, with Tuna Christmas we really have to pull out all the technical stops. The comedy is found in the quick changes and the bizarre costumes and wigs...the fact that two actors are portraying 22 characters. This show is a wild and breathless ride."

J CITY Theater has a history of magically transforming unusual spaces into dynamic theatrical venues. ?Performance spaces are few and far between in Downtown Jersey City?, says Mr. Cockrell. ?But thanks to Father Vic Kennedy and the Church of St. Michael?s, we have found an absolutely perfect location for this show. We are very grateful for the wonderful support of everyone at St. Michael?s. They have opened up their beautiful home and made us feel welcome. We look forward to continuing our relationship as we begin to explore our upcoming season.?

J CITY Theater (www.jcity.org) is a not-for-profit professional theater company based in Jersey City, New Jersey. It is a founding company of the Hudson County Theatre Alliance (www.hudsonall.org) and has been producing locally since 2006. Recent productions include Archibald MacLeish?s J.B., Douglas Carter Bean?s As Bees In Honey Drown, and this summer?s smash hit: Moon Over Buffalo. They are also known for the politically relevant one acts, Compression of a Casualty and The Spot, during HCTA?s annual One Act Festival. J CITY Theater?s mission is to create quality, high-energy theater that is told with sophisticated simplicity.

Re: Is the rental market downtown crazy slow?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi Brewster -

I have apartments downtown - and I'm always looking for new places to advertise vacancies.

So this weeks New York Magazine caught my eye. They had an article about cheap ways of finding apartments, and of course mentioned Craigslist...but then said there are some new alternatives.

Here's what they said:

Craigslist is king, but it?s not the world. Try Streeteasy.com, plus the online Times and Voice classifieds. RDNY.com and ListingSquare.com are less established but may also be worth a look.

I hope this helps,

Clay

Re: Brennan Coffee House Concert Series in Jersey City - Anyone Ever Been?
Home away from home
Home away from home

Yes - The Brennan Coffeehouse is one of the top arts events in the county. And I'm always surprised when people haven't heard of it.

County Executive Tom DeGise started the series a few years ago as a way to utilize the beautiful Rotunda at the Court House for arts and music. I don't know how they do it - but he and his staff at the Cultural Affairs Department always seem to book the biggest names in Folk and Acoustic music.

They draw audiences from NY, CT and as far away as PA.

I highly recommend it. It's just a really cool evening of some very very good music.

Re: Living in former firehouses -- Residents transform them into homes, possible theater
Home away from home
Home away from home

Yes Chief,
J CITY Theater is a non profit organization.
And the $1 a year lease program is a program that allows non profit groups the use of city owned buildings. It is a method that several municipalities use to provide support to the arts and other non profit organizations. It is by no means the only proposal we have discussed with the city, but it is a well researched way that allows cities to support groups in a responsible and measured way. There are several examples of these programs that you can read in our proposal, but one of the main features, is that it keeps the city in an ownership position thus allowing it to oversee the group and insure that the group is fulfilling it's mission of serving the community.

Interestingly, NYC just did this with one of it's firehouses and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Here's the link:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/03/nyregion/03firehouses.html

Also, the city gains by having an historic building saved - and the restoration is paid by someone else...the nonprofit group instead of taxpayers.

And to answer your other question: the estimated economic impact is also explained in the proposal and based on the figure of ticket sales, facility rentals, and program fees. (No apartments, the entire facility will be used by the community.) And also factored in is the research that patrons spend twice the cost of their tickets in the local economy.

So in the end, the city benefits by:
* Gaining a performing arts center - with several community oriented programs.
* Saving a historical building (that someone else pays for.)
* Having a facility that is generating ongoing revenue for the city and the local economy.

Or...they could sell it and get a one time amount of money that would go to plug budget holes. Also, as the building is on the edge of the historic district, I do not believe that it is protected, and the developer could demo it.

Thanks for bringing these issues up Chief.

Re: Living in former firehouses -- Residents transform them into homes, possible theater
Home away from home
Home away from home

Many thanks to Richardo and The Hudson Reporter for mentioning our proposal in regards to 14 Bright Street. I thought I would post to add a few details of our project:

I think many people are aware that there is little to no available performance space in downtown Jersey City. Especially after Victory Hall closed. Many arts groups and theaters are using borrowed spaces in local schools or church basements.

When we noticed that the Fire House at 14 Bright was no longer being used by the day care center, we approached the city with a proposal and have received a lot of support, particularly from City Council President Mariano Vega.

We propose a full restoration of this amazing building with the purpose of developing it into a state of the art performance space.
We envision a theater for stage performances, acoustical concerts, screenings of independent and ?art house? films, and an art gallery.
But also a space that can host our proposed programs of:
Internships with local high schools and colleges ? programs to train the next generation of theater professionals.
Mentoring programs between Jersey City?s seniors and at risk youth.
Partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs (across the street) for performance space and classes in acting, directing and playwriting.
Space for play readings and development.

At this point we have 5 Council members who have given us enthusiastic support for this proposal. We also have obtained the support of the Van Vorst Park Association and Mr. Gary Greenberg, Executive Director of The Boys and Girls Club. However, the mayor and the city administrator feel that the city needs to auction off the building to developers, as the city is in need of funding for upcoming budget issues.

Our proposal shows how the firehouse, if used as a performing arts center, can be a financial asset to the city, bringing in approximately $420,000 per year to the local economy. Our research into the economic impact of the arts in NJ shows that:
There were 25% more diners in local restaurants on performance nights in New Brunswick, NJ.
The nonprofit arts in New Jersey is a $1.5 billion dollar industry.
Theater patrons will spend more than twice the cost of their tickets in the local economy (restaurants, parking, cabs, etc.)
The mayor of Millville, NJ sites their arts scene as the single greatest factor in tripling property values.
A local arts scene is sited as one of the top 5 reasons corporations and businesses decide to locate, stay and expand into a particular city.

The article also mentions Mr. O?Reilly?s suggestions of using the theater at the Museum or the Lowes. Since the council meeting, I have had to opportunity of further discussions with Mr. O?Reilly ? explaining the museum?s theater space is not really an option as they are not open in the evenings and they have no backstage area. Also, while the Lowes is an amazing space ? it is cost prohibitive and too large. Also, these two spaces place us in a rental situation ? which would be prevent us from creating a home base where we could run many of our proposed programs.

We hope to develop the Fire House into a constantly active space where something is happening every night. Theater, film, music, classes?a hub of activity for the entire community.

To see the full proposal ? which includes pictures of the interior of the FireHouse ? please visit our website: www.jcity.org and click on the link at the bottom of the home page.

Also, if this is a project that you can support, please email the mayor to tell him what you think. MayorHealy@jcnj.org

J CITY Theater presents
Ken Ludwig?s Moon Over Buffalo
Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00pm / Sundays at 3:00pm
July 23 thru August 10
Tickets: FREE
At
Frank Sinatra Park ? Frank Sinatra Drive between 4th and 5th Streets, Hoboken

On July 23, 2008, J CITY Theater, Jersey City?s newest professional theater company, is bringing its unique brand of dynamic theater to Hoboken?s Frank Sinatra Park when they open Ken Ludwig?s side-splitting comedy: Moon Over Buffalo. Performances will run July 23 through August 10: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm. Performances are Free.

Due to an opening in the summer performance calendar of the Hoboken Department of Cultural Affairs, J CITY Theater has been invited to stage a production at the famed Frank Sinatra Park. With the gracious support of David Zimmerman and The Theater Center at DeBaun, J CITY Theater is excited to bring this Tony Award-nominated comedy to Hoboken audiences.

Moon Over Buffalo is a madcap farce that reveals the backstage lunacy of a theatrical touring company in 1953. It is the story of George and Charlotte Hay, faded Broadway stars who have been exiled from Hollywood and are reduced to touring the country in tired old plays with a ragtag ensemble. But their dreams of making it big are revived when they learn that the Oscar-winning director, Frank Capra, is coming to the matinee to audition them for his next film.

George and Charlotte, who have a flaring Burton/Taylor-style relationship, are in the midst of a fantastic fight when opportunity knocks. Forced to deal with jealousies, mistaken identities, drunkenness and hilarious misunderstandings, they make every effort to salvage their production and stay true to that old theater tradition: The show must go on!

Ludwig captures the rich pandemonium that goes into a small theater company?s attempt to stage a show and has added murderous complications for heightened comedic effect. Originally opening on Broadway in 1995, Moon Over Buffalo is best known for bringing Carol Burnett back to Broadway after 30 years and earning her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play.

?The entire production and rehearsal process of this show has been great fun,? says Sandy Cockrell, J CITY Theater?s Artistic Director. ?In all of our productions, we tell the story with a sophisticated simplicity. Due to the nature of outdoor performances, we?ve been able to take this process even further and I think the result is a wild farce that really showcases our particular approach to theater.?

Clay Cockrell, J CITY Theater?s Executive Producer is grateful for all the support they have received from Hoboken. ?Mayor David Roberts, Geri Fallo at the Hoboken Cultural Affairs Department and David Zimmerman at The Theater Center have welcomed us with open arms. David in particular has provided us with local rehearsal space and created a home-away-from-home for us. As a Jersey City-based theater company, we are extremely grateful for all of the Hoboken support and I believe this show is a product of the new cooperation that has developed as a result of the founding of the Hudson County Theatre Alliance.?

J CITY Theater (www.jcity.org) is a not-for-profit professional theater company based in Jersey City, New Jersey. It is a founding company of the Hudson County Theatre Alliance (www.hudsonall.org) and has been producing locally since 2006. J CITY Theater - Friday - As Bees In Honey Drown

Opening night is Friday September 28th!

J CITY Theater presents
As Bees in Honey Drown by Douglas Carter Beane
September 28 through October 14
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm / Sundays at 3:00pm (except Sunday Oct 7 at 7:00pm)
Tickets: $15
Tickets can be purchased through www.brownpapertickets.com or calling 800-838-3006.
At
The Brennan Courthouse
583 Newark Ave, Jersey City, NJ 07306

Taking advantage of Jersey City?s exciting Fall art season, J CITY Theater?s selection of As Bees in Honey Drown has pitch-perfect timing. This manic comedy, set in the roller coaster New York art world, is a biting commentary on the American culture?s obsession with fame and celebrity. The seduction of fame without achievement is mined for comic gold in this runaway Off-Broadway hit from Douglas Carter Beane, the playwright of last season?s Tony Award-winning The Little Dog Laughed. J CITY Theater creates a glittering world of image over substance while spinning this fairy tale of success.

Alexa Vere de Vere, played by Sandy Cockrell, is the show?s ferocious and flawless siren who moves the story along at a fevered pitch. Says one character of Alexa, ?She is a mixture of every woman I?ve ever loved in a movie.? Her intoxicating allure is laced with danger, keeping the audience guessing right up to the closing moments. Is she goddess or grifter?

J CITY Theater Executive Producer Clay Cockrell states that the play was selected because of its focus on the art world. ?Each Fall, Jersey City explodes with the visual arts as ProArts presents its annual Jersey City Artists Studio Tour,? says Mr. Cockrell. ?We wanted to add a theatrical voice to this year?s tour and I believe this show is a great addition to the line up of events.?

Indeed, J CITY Theater is working closely with ProArts, whose Artists Studio Tour occurs during the second week of the show?s three-week run. Several paintings by ProArts? members will be used as part of the scenic design of the play and will be for sale to the public when the show closes on October 14. Additionally, performance space and gallery space will become one as J CITY Theater shares the Brennan Courthouse Rotunda with one of the Artists Studio Tour?s major shows: the 2007 Hudson County State-Wide Arts Annual, entitled ?The Nature of Duality,? curated by France Garrido and Kathryn Klanderman. ?This play about the art world is actually going to be surrounded by the works of some of New Jersey?s most exciting artists,? says Mr. Cockrell. ?We think the Brennan Courthouse is going to be a not-to-be-missed stop for the Fall.?

?The idea for doing a play at the Brennan Courthouse came out of conversation with County Executive Tom DeGise?, says J CITY Theater Artistic Director Sandy Cockrell. ?We are big fans of the Brennan Coffee House, which Tom created as a showcase for folk music and has become extremely successful. Tom had heard of the things we have been doing as a theater company and approached us asking how he could help. Together with Bill LaRosa and the Hudson County Office of Cultural Affairs, we have developed a way to turn this beautiful space into a working theater. Since taking office, Tom DeGise has turned the Brennan Courthouse into one the county?s premier centers for art, music and now?theater. We are immensely grateful to him.?

Re: JC Brownstone Renovations
Home away from home
Home away from home

rpz620,

Good luck my friend. My wife Sandy and I did what you are doing (started in 2001) and I think it shaved 10 years off our life. In the end, we have an amazing home that has appreciated in value, but the process nearly killed us. (Is that negative enough for you?)

The hardest part is living in the midst of the rubble. Suggestion: have some place in your home that is a haven...no tools, no mess, someplace to shut the door and pretend life is normal.

As to contractors, there are a lot of con men out there. So get recommendations. And try to put in some incentive to complete the work on time. Say a bonus of $x if they get it done by a certain date. I always wanted to say: I will deduct $100 for every day this project goes past a certain date. I wish I had done that, but my day job is being a psychotherapist and my empathetic and understanding side would always get suckered by the excuses and crisis that they came up with for why things took longer than promised.

I will give you one great name: Rolando of Clear Flow Plumbing. This guy gets a Christmas card from me every year. The best I ever dealt with. phone: 201-955-0011.

Good luck.

Clay

Re: Taqueria
Home away from home
Home away from home

Ok, so call me slow. I've been reading about Taqueria for the past year or more. Starting with the Taco Truck and then following their story on JC List, and I've been meaning to try them out for the longest time. So finally Sandy and I took the plunge and tried them Friday.

Oh. My. God. How do they do that? It was amazing. I've never had anything like it. Delicious! Simple! Wow!

I hate that their prices are so damn cheap. If they were more expensive I could talk myself out of going there every day, but with these prices, damn. I'm going to be there way too much.

I now understand what you all have been talking about...the taco addiction. You weren't kidding.

AM New York: Jersey City resident doing outdoor psychotherapy in NYC
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi all,
AM New York newspaper (one of the free ones at the PATH and subway stations) just did an article today on my private practice and I thought I would post it here. Someone recently posted asking for info on local counselors and I thought this could explain a little about what I do. (When not producing great theater in Jersey City!)
Thanks,
Clay Cockrell, LCSW

AM New York. by Farnoosh Torabi
Recovery: Like a walk in the park.

Clay Cockrell rings up a new pair of sneakers each month. His job demands it.

As the sole psychoanalyst running Walk and Talk, the 37-year-old conducts therapy sessions on the go in Central Park, Battery Park and throughout Manhattan.

"We generally walk in isolated areas. It's not like people are listening in on our conversations," said Cockrell, who calls his alternative method "outdoor psychotherapy." Although if the trees could talk, it would probably be a different story, he admitted.

The concept for Walk and Talk began three years ago after treating patients in his midtown office. "It was actually my wife's idea," said Cockrell.

Since then, his client list has more than doubled from 15 to 40 a week. "We'll walk to their place of business or I'll meet them at their apartment? The convenience was a big selling point," he said, adding that appointments are sometimes scheduled in his old midtown office if the discussion is too serious.

Sessions run $100 to $150 for 50 minutes, depending on the time of day. Lunch time and the evening hours after work are, expectedly, the highest in demand and are the most expensive.

Clients range from Wall Streeters to those in film, theater and advertising. Most are referred by friends. Others find Cockrell on his Web site WalkandTalk.com.

"I do really well with freelancers. They have that mentality of thinking outside the box," said Cockrell, a licensed social worker. Going forward, he'd like to see his business expand and be able to employ one more therapist who'd share his philosophy.

Beyond the convenience factor, the benefits of the business, Cockrell said, are two-fold. First, the outdoor therapy sessions allow for more interaction that can support one's personal growth.

"You can talk about how the weather affects your emotion. A lot of my clients don't get to be outside a lot."

Take 30-something-year-old Diana Jones (who wished to have her name changed for this article). After a year visiting traditional therapists (couches and all), she now spends her lunch hour every other week with Cockrell in Central Park.

In the past three months, she said Cockrell has helped her better cope with her anxiety issues related to running her own business and starting a family with her husband. "Distractions within the park are actually nice," she said. "Being [there] we see 40 billion kids ? it almost helps [to think it through]."

Then, there's the physical growth, said Cockrell, since being active is ultimately a healthy thing for the body. Personally speaking,

Cockrell's blood pressure's gone down and he's shed about 15 pounds since starting the business. He said being outdoors also forces him to be more on his toes.

"This is harder, I found [for me]," he said. "You really got to be on your game. It's a dynamic active session. I'm exhausted by the end of the day."
