Yet the August 25, 2020 special council meeting 740 people sent a petition to the city council on "defunding the police." Not all lived in JC but many do.

Re: New Protections for Tenants: What You Need to Know
Home away from home
Home away from home

I saw a video of a man from NYC who owns a 2-family brownstone, he has not been paid since August 2019 and is due $65,000 in rent. In the meanwhile, his tenant has sublet the apartment and is collecting rent while he must supply heat and hot water.
So, how do anyone knows if someone is working from home and decides not to pay in NJ? If you don't pay the first three quarters in JC, you go into tax lien by November of this year and that also includes your water payment. Who is checking that the renter is not pulling a scam just like what is happening to this guy in NYC?

Someone has to improve the 5 Corners Library. There is nothing worthwhile there. During the 1960s, it was known as the Art Library. It had many books on art as well as copies of famous paintings.

It is one thing for adults to get the vaccine but the vaccine is really a gene therapy. So I would not give the vaccine to a minor child unless he/she had a serious medical condition such as cancer.

Of course there is more infection, JC quietly and without fanfare have received many of the immigrants that came across the border. They have covid to the point that Democrat elected officials from Texas are now complaining to Joe Biden. This new version is more contagious but not as deadly.

Re: A New Study Revives the Debate Over Property Tax Abatements

Society Hills was built on contaminated land in the 1980s and received no tax abatements and Dixon Mills, the downtown pencil so received no tax abatements in the 1980s. Newport did not originally receive tax abatements because they won a $40 million UDAG grant in the 1980s. So when did tax abatements become popular? It is when the city asked Newport to give affordable housing. In exchange Newport asked for a tax abatements, years after the first 4 buildings went up as well as the mall being built. Newport advertised their affordable units in the New York Post and many New Yorkers grab them. 271 units out of 1500 became affordable and developers then start asking for tax abatements since LeFrak got a sweetheart deal.

Call up the rent leveling board, they will tell you increases are based on the Consumer Price Index which is between 1 to 4%. The last time it was 4% was 2009, it was on the city's website until it was removed last year. Then call the Hudson County Tax Board to ask them about assessment being lowered because JC, unlike other Hudson County towns cannot pass on a tax increase so landlords always win in tax court.

It is not just tax abatements, it is rent control laws which has expanded thanks to Councilman Solomon to cover non-occupied homeowners of 2 to 4 houses. Rent control is covered by the Consumer Price Index, not taxes. So when taxes go up, the landlord goes to tax court to appeal. The tenants do not pay. All of the taxes including the art tax that everyone voted on is passed on to the small homeowner and condo owner. JC has become a socialist city where some pays for everyone.

But the budget shows we are actually paying more money this year on bond debt. There were two bonds, the second bond was money from a re-finance bond. The bond debt is over $600 million. In addition we are paying $280 to the school and $170 million to the county for their budgets I personally think the city is refinancing bonds so they will have people in the bond business give campaign contributions.

My error, that should be $280 million to the school system.

Actually, the pope has let the decision to the local bishop, while I agree Francis is too progressive, Bishop Cordileone of San Francisco has said the Latin Mass will continue. But the Archdiocese of Newark has Cardin Tobin, I believe he will squash it. Conservative Catholics have already demonstrated outside the Cathedral for his liberal attitude on Seton Hall University Radio Station and the music they play.

I understand he took money from Fireman who wants the 22 acres in Liberty Park. So now I am stuck, I don't want him or Fulop. Fulop has no control over the spending or bonding. Healy last budget was $485 million. Fulop took over in 2013, the budget is now $620 million and as far as I am concerned, he is responsible for the problem with the school. All of those tax abatements robbed them of their budget and we are paying a high price with higher school taxes.

The city council has reduced public speaking from 5 minutes to 3 minutes, so it is difficult to have the time to speak on more than one subject. If you want to speak on garbage removal that effects your property or the museum, you must choose what to speak on.

Re: Offering Private CRT Lessons in JC

This country never celebrated the Pilgrims arrivals of 400 years in 1620 around Christmas time. That would upset the time line of the CRT. Neither do they teach the fact that a black man name Anthony who was a slave, got his freedom then had slaves both white and black but when his black slave wanted his freedom after 7 years, actually more time has passed, it was the black owner who took him to court to keep him in bondage which was the basis for slavery forever. Up to the point, blacks slaves were treated the same as white slaves. I learned this bit of history in my black history class by a black professor.

This will come to fruition and JC will be the only city in the state other than AC to allow consumption lounges. They originally were not, but I and many other people wrote to the city planner, urging them to reverse course, and they did.

Another humiliating defeat for Yvonne, all the NAs, and the conservative NIMBYs :)

I am not stupid enough to put smoke in my lungs. But the issue is not me, the issue is the tax. Those who buy cannabis will find ways to avoid paying the tax as they are doing in California and that industry is crashing.

Vernon Richardson was an outstanding aide to the late Councilman Yun, if he is half as good as the late Yun, he would be an outstanding councilman. Michael Yun understood the budget, bonding and all the businesses practices of the city which are the duties of any councilperson.

I never heard this guy speak at any public hearing including ordinances. So, why does he think he is qualified? The job of the councilperson is to create laws and vote on the budget. The running and management of the city belong to the mayor since JC changed its form of government in 1960 to the Faulkner Act.

I am not a marijuana user but if I was, I would jut pull out my plants and grow the stuff. I grew up in Hoboken and every year, the Hoboken Fire Department did a control burn on the Palisades near the JC/Union City border. Marijuana was a weed that grew there.

I read that California governor is giving the Cannabis industry $100 million to bail them out. People are buying their weed for other sources because the tax on cannabis makes it pricey. Any user would just do the same here. So I don't think that tax will lead to anything. Then there are those who will just grow their own marijuana.

I remember sitting in high school during my senior year and some boys were talking about the draft while Vietnam was going on, before the start of the day. One boy said, his brother lost his deferment from college and will be drafted soon. Vietnam is history and so is the draft but the descendants of these boys are competing for jobs and housing against people Joe Biden is telling to come here illegally. And their descendants are also paying the money these illegal immigrants are receiving. Under the Biden Administration, US government is turning its back on its own citizens and giving a welcome to those who will be dependents on government handouts for years to come. Happy Memorial Day to my former classmates.

The point being, for people living in Journal Square and the Heights that is a 10 to 15 minutes drive. Let's get real, many people shop outside JC anyway due to the parking.

None of the questions are aimed at protecting the small homeowner. We are the ones stuck with the bills. Affordable housing does not make any small homeowner taxes go down, if fact, they are stuck paying the taxes for others.

This was an ordinance that Watterman and Mira Prinz-Arey voted in 2018. If you vote on an ordinance then you should not benefit. By the way, Watterman had her daughter as her council-aide but got flak so her daughter now works for EDC and her son works for the county.

Texas is a warm state so they invested in green energy and then winter came. The windmills stopped working and the solar panels were covered in snow. For weeks, people froze and their water pipes broke. People had to find alternative form of energy that cost some consumers $15,000 for that month. Jersey City has a true winter. I am concerned this push on green energy with our winters will lead us to the problems of Texas. Hopefully, consumers can still choose the energy they want.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/weather/w ... le-winter-storms-n1258049

Give that (wo)man a medal!

Robin.

Back in the mid 1970s, Senator Cowan came to a Van Vorst Park meeting pushing the state income tax. He said the state will cover the education expense of public schools. The idea of paying for a new state did not thrill me since the sales tax pushed in 1966 was supposed to do the same thing. However, the Senator convinced many Hudson County people and the state income tax was passed. Like the sales tax that was sold as way to pay for education, it did not. We were lied to. So we have a sales tax in 1966 and the income tax, We had had the lottery that promised the same thing. The state has a lot of money but it is not going for what it promised the people.

I have taught students known as "undocumented people." Guess what, they do have birth certificates with them so they are not undocumented, some even have Baptismal records. Even JC will give immigrants ID but they require legal records to give them ID. I could never figure out why Dems pretend illegal immigrants are stupid. They know our laws and they use it to their full advantage.

Unless the city government rewrites its rent control laws and allows tax pass alongs, this means nothing. No renter will pay this addition and no affordable housing tenant will pay this either. It is just another tax on the small homeowner.
