Re: The Dopeness

Home away from home

Went for dinner last night and the front room with the bar was full.

The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere really laid back and welcoming. We're putting this in our regular rotation as it was a great alternative to takeout on nights when you're too tired to do anything.

We had chicken enchiladas and a burrito, both good, nice sized portions (I brought my leftovers home for lunch today), and inexpensive (no more than $12 each with rice, beans, chips and salsa).

That location on Newark would still not solve Maxwell's issue about the lack of parking for its patrons. Granted street parking there would probably better than Hoboken. I think one of the vacant large storefronts on Newark (bw Grove and Erie) would be good. You'd be surprised how big some of those stores are also its Close to the path plus nearby parking whether it be municipal lot or grove pointe.

I feel like if I read between the lines, the owner's main concern is the changing vibe in Hoboken. People from Manhattan and Brooklyn aren't as likely to trek out there to see a show. Hoboken isn't seen as an enclave of interesting cultural events. But I'm having an easier and easier time getting said folks to come to jc between the food events, relaxed bar scene, and just the general feel of our hood.

So move that operation over here!!!

Did that storefront get flooded in Sandy? They're at least 1/2 below street level. Hope the new business moving in has taken precautions. It stinks to see someone busting their a$$ to open something only to have it all destroyed when mother nature goes crazy on us.

Where?s the joy in being so devoted to connoisseurship that it spoils enjoyment of otherwise good products? I would have chosen different beers?gueuze seems particularly appropriate given the style of cooking for example?but I don?t see what?s wrong with their selection.

I?ve been partial to English, Belgian, and German ales and lagers for the past 20 years, but I would be content with a bottle of Lionshead, fermented corn and all, if that?s the only beer available. Fine cooking hasn?t made me lose my taste for HollyKenLinCrown Fried Chicken, ramen noodles, McDonalds fries, or cold frankfurters straight from the package, so why be spoiled by the best beers in the world? Gimmicky and light beers aside, the average hopped, fermented malt beverage is already quite good any it only gets better from there.

I enjoy Coors Light when it's 110 outside. But cold hotdogs? Really?

High/Low is hardly unusual these days. I think some people just like something new or special when they go out for what they have been told will be a great dining experience. If your passion is beer, you might not find it here.

Good to know they've got their liquor license. Could definitely see stopping in early evening for some drinks and small plates.

As for the beer selection, I would think the chef could utilize his connections to get some special brews from the regional places. Maybe they're seeing what their customers prefer before they start going in a beer direction. With most of the local bars stepping up with craft beers, we've all become minor connoisseurs at this point so the stakes are set pretty high.

Re: Ginfi Mexican Restaurant.

We had brunch here a couple weeks ago and had a fine experience. The server was relatively quick with the coffee and the food. The food was delicious but the portions just a little small (I'm a slim girl and I was still a little hungry afterwards).

The two of us each got a platter, coffee came with the meal, and the bill was under $14, so very reasonable for brunch.

Mine was pretty spicy, the server must have noticed I was sweating a bit, and she kindly brought me some lime slices to cut the heat. I didn't need them (I like spicy) but appreciated the attention to the needs of the customers.

They need help with the decor. This space has never capitalized on the great light and ceiling height.

They have takeout menus. We took one home.

Is this place opening soon? I walked by a few weeks ago and there was a lot of activity inside. The decor looked like it was gonna be sorta Brooklyn-y. Nice.

So the word is that the owner of Two Aprons is opening a sitdown restaurant with outdoor seating at the place wedged between Grand Street and Bright Street (where the short-lived bagel place was). I think it's opening within a few weeks.

Pretty cool news. I hope the small place in Paulus Hook keeps it's small-town feel, though.

I love that little building! Hope they can make it work. That area could use a couple more dining options.

I would love to see more gallery space, in general, downtown. It's great to see what local artists are working on but if you're not home the open studio wknds, it's almost impossible to know what our resident artists are up to.

I'd like to hear some of the artists chime in: What's holding you back from exhibiting in JC? No venues? LITM keeps showing the same artists? You don't want coffee splattered all over your work?

Maybe some of that hotel tax rev could go towards a fine art festival. They could close down Newark and all our artists could set up booths of their work. Many other cities have these events and it's a huge draw for visitors. And I for one have lots of empty wall space :)

In the past couple of years downtown lost a boon to the community, the 58 gallery, mostly because the city was effectively antagonistic toward the people who ran it.

I wish someone would have asked the candidates how they would have addressed that situation, where the complaints of an overly-sensitive neighbor who can't stand a bit of extra noise and sidewalk traffic once every other month trumps the entire arts community here.

Is the gallery completely shut down? I could understand a neighbor complaining about the parties post opening - I stopped in one night around 11pm and was surprised to find that the festivities were still going strong. But couldn't there be some sort of compromise? Earlier openings? No music and lingering party afterwards? Was that even an option? Seems like a total shame that they can't show art there anymore. It was a very do-able gallery size for local artists.

I heard they were closing? Not sure if the rumor is true.

Went in once, took in the very corporate crowd and the lackluster beer list and the pretty boring decor, and left. Not my kind of atmosphere. I think we went to Barcade instead. Their beer selection (and music choices) are second to none in the hood.

We use them for condo and auto. They have always been inexpensive and are very pleasant on the phone when we've added, changed stuff. They also send an occasional check out to us - kinda like dividends I guess?

The place is such a great addition to the block - a real restaurant with carefully considered decor, signage, and printed materials. The menu looks wonderful too. Here's hoping the food and service are on par with the latter. They took their time getting things ready for opening, so my expectations are high!

Anyone know what's going into the storefront to the right of Choc o Pain (where Jacks toy store used to be)? The For Rent sign came down weeks ago and it would be great to get something in there while the enthusiasm for CoP is so high.

I don't understand the brick and morters' beef. I've never been on my way to a restaurant, saw a food truck and thought, "Gee, maybe I want to stand outside and eat something instead." If I want a restaurant, I go there. If it's a nice night and Groove on Grove is happening, food truck's the way to go.

Food trucks encourage more foot traffic, something that's good for everyone.

Had a slice of apricot tart on Saturday and it was exceptional. Whatever it cost, it was worth the price.

Mushroom quiche was also delicious - creamy and light with little punches of herbs throughout. Spicy tuna sandwich was yummy but the bread was a little hard to chew through.

One morning I left my chocolate croissant on the counter :O but I called them and they had held it for me. So I walked back and enjoyed. 20 minutes well spent.

Only suggestion? Leave your strollers outside. It's too tight in there. No suggestions for Choc o Pain. You're perfect.

Roman Nose is great for an inexpensive pasta fix. Their carbonara is really tasty comfort food and the homemade desserts are worth saving room for. And if you bring wine, it's a pretty cheap date night!

GP's has wonderful ambiance and more upscale fare. I love their crostinis and wines by the glass. I hope they improve the outdoor seating for the upcoming season. They need a little fence or topiaries or something to define that space.

Rustique Pizza has my favorite homemade lobster ravioli in downtown. It's always filled with big chunks of lobster meat.

Re: DT Jersey City Real Estate Market?!

+1
I don't make enough to own the same type of place in Brooklyn or NYC as I do in JC, but even if I did, I would still choose JC. It's low key, friendly, and just a path ride away from the hustle if I want it. And all my family lives south, so my travel times dropped by an hour when I moved from Brooklyn.

I would rather live in JC that NYC even though I could afford either. For one I am cheap and everything involving cost of living is higher there. I need to have some actual cheap stores accessible to me - I'm a Goodwill, discount grocery store kind of gal. JC has that along with a reasonable amount of culture - enough to have stuff to do but not so much it's overwhelming. In NYC there are always 10 things going on, with friends trying to get you to go to lots of different things, and I find it draining. I also find the apartment sizes claustrophobic in the city, combined with all the hustle and bustle on the street, crowds and noise pollution - you aren't shoulder to shoulder on any sidewalk in JC. I also don't like the loneliness of NYC, that you can so easily be anonymous most places you go - anywhere I go in JC I recognize people, they recognize me, I feel like part of a community.

Re: DT Jersey City Real Estate Market?!

We closed on our new place in December but missed out on two properties before that due to bidding wars. We had looked for almost a year and the market changed in that year. By late 2012, places came on the mkt and were gone within a week. Good places gone in a day or two. We payed slightly more than asking but are very happy to be there.

Downtown is getting really hot all of a sudden. People in Brooklyn now perk up when we say we live in JC. They used to pity us. Our lovely undiscovered little hamlet seems to be on everyone's radar now.

They bought the last building I was in and immediately got rid of the monthly cleaning svc that did the hallways and the monthly pest control. They then raised the rent on unoccupied apts by 50%. They were letting that bldg fall apart. They're kinda slummy in my opinion.

Re: American Can/ Canco Lofts

Home away from home

Every time I've been in Canco, I've been impressed with the apts and building. There aren't any comparable loft like units downtown with the same character and modern loft conversion feel (soaring cielings, slick kitchens, unique layouts). If this style is your thing, you know what I mean. And for the price, it can't be beat. I think the fees there actually include a garage parking space. The gym isn't so great and the billiards room decor is a little cheesey IMO. And you have to be content with your walkable dining options being limited to Indian food.

Beacon feels like being in a hotel. I'm imagining the fees are so high there because the pool and gym and billiards room and all day shuttle to PATH and movie screening room with cushy loungers and library and endless staff running around cleaning the pristine hallways and gorgeous art deco lobby. That place is always crawling with staff.

ZL has high fees in part because of that roof leak assessment. And I can only imagine what the Sandy damage will cost the residents there.
