Re: PSE&G Supply Energy Question
Home away from home
Home away from home

It might be simpler than that:
Deregulation of the energy sector allows utilities to charge what they want...they want A LOT, so PSE&G raised their price 50%.
(They may hae had to pay off a couple officials to make the increase seem like it was actually based on anything besides greed.)

"Going Green" is MADE to look expensive, just like cigarettes were MADE to look innocuous.

Any figures on the profit increase for PSE&G between 2006 and 2009?

Re: C-Town Being Sold

How about a 20 story condo tower squeezed in. They could give it a stoop of steps and and old streetlight to make it look like it fits into the neighborhood...to the blind anyway. Of course a tax abatement goes without saying because how else could one induce developement into such a "blighted area" desperately in neeed of an ugly high rise. Besides, the City Council and Planning Boards need new cars.

Isn't Jersey Cith a hoot?

No market in that location can compete with Shop-Rite and BJ's just a couple blocks away...WITH parking. It is an economic non-starter.

But in truth, ANYTHING would be an improvement over that disgustingly foul C-Town. I'm sure there is a ghetto somewhere in East Orange where they could re-open.

Re: Gov. Christie Fires Schools Chief, Bret Schundler

Schundler must be forgiven failing to understand the requirments of filing paperwork. His goals were higher, planning how to get a statue of a different SAINT in front of each and every school.

Six months of Schundler as School Commissioner was at least 5 months too long.

And Christie has shown his mettle: "The buck stops there...or there...or there." He's a lying little twat ( forget the "little" part.)
One must remember that lies don't work so well when you are being TAPED!

Say bye-bye to $400 million because NJ elected an idealogic, bombastic, nincompoop as governor.

I guess the next thing for Schundler is running for Councilman-at-Large in Jersey City. Oh joy!

I think Zabar's is likely.

On the other hand, if Citarella bought them they'd be able to keep the "C!"

Whoever buys them, I hope they keep the same high level of class as C-Town, and that same delightful smell of spoiled meat.

Re: PATH (pathetic attempt at transporting humans)

Home away from home

You must be talking about the OTHER PATH train...the one in Utopia.

OUR PATH train connecting NY and NJ has management that cares not a whit about its customers and their complaints. Otherwise we would not have filthy stations with 6 month old garbage on the tracks, 100 degree stations, expensive television systems broadcasting NOTHING. Remember, this is the train line that collected BILLIONS in fare increases for the sole purpose of lengthening all the stations to accept longer trains and ease crowding

I'm sure they all got a good laugh about THAT one.

"Hey let's stop the weekend train between Hoboken and WTC...that'll REALLY piss 'em off."

Any complaint system they set up will fail very quickly, just like all their schemes...but in the meantime they will get a good laugh at our complaints.

"Hey Jim, 2 people were hospitalized from the heat. Isn't that a friggen SCREAM!"

Re: What do you think about Duncan ave. off of JFK Blvd. in Journal SQ?

I ALMOST moved into 60? Duncan (the cream colored one with the circular driveway) before I chose Newport. The elegant but dated top floor 6 room apartment was grand but the rent was twice what I had been paying.

But that was a long time ago. The City tries a little harder to keep it safe for a lot of seniors living at Boyd-MvGuiness on Kennedy between Duncan and Fairview (I think.)

But then you didn;t say what side of Kennedy you were considering.

To the West down the hill and the "grandeur" disappears.
$145K for 2 br/2bath sounds okay. How about real estate taxes, HOA, and utilities?

I suspected overcharging on the food bar ($5.99 a pound) and measured against my electronic postal scale when I got home. They were correct in fact even gave me credit for a larger tare weight than actual.

On produce, I find they often make mistakes in my favor. Helps a little to make up for their gross overpricing.

So no, I cannot say I was ever "overweighed."

And MY building pays about $400,000 a year "in lieu of taxes" for 325 luxury apartments. Now THAT'S want you call an abatement.

And the schools can can be supported by dumb schmucks in the other parts of the city who don't know how to fight the issue in court. They should learn.

But as long as big developers keep payoffs coming to the City Council, Mayor, and Deputy mayors, they will continue to be allowed NOT to pay their fair share of running the schools, the city and the county. (Gotta love the concept of the SINGLE time the FBI came round with bags of money for the pols, they filled their nets with almost every target they picked....GIMME GIMME!)

They should try again: "Hi, I'm XYZ Chen, Developers of housing...would like to invest 500 Billion in a housing project replacing your Greeniville. Vote me huge tax abatement and I will give you $100,000."
And out will go the REST of City Government.

Abated payments are not taxes, they are payments INSTEAD of taxes. It helps if people get their terms correct.

Developers cannot collect rent on trees! Cities cannot make them pay taxes.
So we get concrete, bricks, and asphalt. (Unless you live in the Heights where everything must be aluminum sided. )

And YOU don't get it: You are calliing for teaing down buidings becasue BAD people are living in these buildings. Do you think anyone tore down Bernie Madhoff's palacial quarters although he was shown to be perhaps the most damaging criminal of the decade (presidents and vice presidents excluded?)

You deal with criminals by arresting them, trying them, convicting them and imprisoning them...not by tearing down their homes and the homes of their neighbors.

[And screetching all in capital letters won't make your point, but rather just exposes your inability to communicate. What's next, using crayons?]

And "criminal element" has always been a euphemism for racists who are deprived of using uglier terms to describe poor blacks.

Yes I "get it" but what I "get" is racial gentrification and profiling gussied up with more palatable terms.

Montgomery Gardens was just FINE until some of the "nice" people wanted to move next door. (Now THAT'S how to use capitals...to emphasize words.)

I think they use a random number generator to print their bills.

Has ANYONE else had the joy of going to the Kennedy Boulevard Office from the waterfront by PATH and then taking that crowded bus from Journal Square down towards Bayonne, giving Comcast a blown box (through the bulletproof glass) in exchange for a new one and doing the return trip and having them send their "activation signal" about 20 times to no effect and then taking the NEW blown box back down via Path and bus to get a THIRD box...all in the same day? Such a nice way to spend a day.

Do you think they MIGHT test their boxes before risking shot equipment to customers? (THat's rhetorical!)

Moving into a poor area and displacing the residents because they are poor so you can be more comfortable is an ugly crime...perhaps the ugliest. Racial cleansing takes many forms but those DOING it always excuse themselves with "nicer" terms that make them feel altrusitic.

If it's not a connectivity problem with your equipment, you might want to arrange a service call instead of posting maniacal ranting here. Just a thought...

What it is is an an improper order fulfiillment, compounded by a non-communication between the device provider on Kennedy Blvd with the billing and communications department resulting in non-communication between Comcast and my box, added to my NEVER getting On-Demanad, followed by a dubious monstrous, purposely confusing change in billing and service levels resulting in improperly sent signals to my STB...compounded with failure of equipment and inability to rectify the problem because of planned stupidity on the part of those with whom I speak.

There is no MANIACAL rant, just a documentation of the chaos with Comcast for the last year.

The year before was another story with different equipment and equally moronic corporate handling.

So keep the "MANIACAL" rant comments to yourself. I guess you never read Dante but don't feel stupid, a lot of people are semi-illiterate.

What I and many have found is that EVERY attempt at problem resolution with Comcast results in MORE problems and higher prices. THat's why people cheer with GLEE when they cancel this utter monstrosity of a company.

MY personal problem is solved: Comcast get's their pink slip!

Thank you HAA member,

I look forward to perusing the budgets...first glance is proving VERY interesting.

As far as guidstar.org goes, I tried all options available to the choice Liberty Humane Society, Jersey City, NJ and all the preferred choces led to nearly no information. Perhaps some FOR-PAY option would have yielded more.

But what you put on your site is more than enough for a decent analysis.

Its never been about keeping people out of high rises. No one is saying that tall buildings create crime all on their own.

But that is EXACTLY what they are saying and indeed it makes no sense. I have read the same phrase, "warehousing the poor in high rises," over and over and over. BUT if they were HONEST they would say what they really meant and that is:
We have some money and we don't want the slimy poor nearby so we want to bulldoze their homes to make the area nicer for migrant day-workers in NYC.

Lying about the excuses by using stupid terms like "warehousing the poor" is just a way to disguise their racism and classism. If Montgomery Gardens is torn down and its residents displaced it is a crime committed by the wanna-be-rich againt the poorest of the poor...an obscenity.

Do you think living in a 90 year old 4 story walk-up makes people somehow more "good?" Does destroying a hospital that cared for the poor to make room for wealthy wanna-be's and then adding the extermination of surrounding housing seem like sensible planning for a POOR city. Repeat: POOR CITY!

Anyways,
My feeling is that the concept of a "no-kill" shelter in a densely packed City simply cannot work. The animals are in the shelter because people didn't want them, the numbers of these animals will grow and grow if euthanaia is not practiced on the unadoptable pets.
If people toss their pets for whatever reason, it is unreasonable that OTHER people will take on the burden to house and feed them for 5 or 10 years as their numbers grow and grow.

AND if more than 50% of the money is paid in salaries, then the place should be shut down. If 75% goes to salaries, the WORKERS should be euthanized.

Re: HUGE GAS LINE COMING? Companies look to run natural gas pipeline through Jersey City

Comcast Channel 1 (which they are trying to take back) cablecasted a great deal of the public hearings yesterday morning. I watched for several hours. It was very informative because a great deal of the testimony was new to me. I'm sure they will repeat the cablecast frequently.

My favorite moment was a gentleman positing the situation" "Can you imagine a similar meeting in New York City proposing a gas pipeline to meet the energy needs of Jersey City that needed to be routed across Manhattan?"
The audience went wild.

Re: Who here really, really hates Comcast?

mscott,

Everything you say about analogue vs. digital is correct and that is why the nation switched to OTA digital. COMCAST however has chosen to waste all the bandwidth on STILL cablecasting analogue on about 60 channels.
What that allows them to do is to charge EXTRA for something that is above and beyond the outmoded system...there is no real need to continue wasting that bandwidth EXCEPT to charge everyone for a digital box on top of the cable service.

So the net is that Comcast wastes bandwidth for the SOLE purpose of bilking customers. Like the phone company charging extra if you wasnt your service to work with a push button phone instead of one with a dial.

I hate Concast even worse than before and that is saying something. I haven't had ON-DEMAND for 10 months. Now I get GSOD (green screen of death) or the signal just disappears and I must turn everything off and on again or else with GSOD, unplug the box....at least once an hour. My DVR hasn't worked in a month. (No it's not an HDMI handshake issue... but coincidentally there is NO output via component connection.) And no guide channels. ( gotta use the internet to see what's on.)

O have to go from room to room depending on which channel I want to watch.

I am doing NOTHING about it but I am CERTAIN that Comcast has gotten its last monthly check from me. I am STILL getting a little more than I am paying for but adding in the aggravation factor, they owe me $20,000 per month. I am HOPING to arrange something else but if I cannot, then it is OTA broadcasting + Netflix for me...and more reading.

In Dante's Hell, Comcast lives somewhere below the level of Judas, and Brutus...down under the ice in Lucifer's asshole. Choose Comcast as your provider only if you are somewhere between complete despair and suicide.

Re: Liberty Humane Society offering DOUBLE DUTY DISCOUNT ADOPTIONS this weekend
Home away from home
Home away from home

So let's go with a couple items on catsndogs breakdown (thanks by the way.)

Budget: "about a million dollars"
Jersey City contract 44% (that's $440,000)

Complaint that the city is paying only $1.50 per capita (which I assume means animals not people )
$440,000/year from city/$1.50 per animal = 293,000 animals per year.
Now WHY do I have trouble believing that?

How many animals DO pass through each year and perhaps paying people a half million dollars (or more) to pass them through is a huge waste of money.

The reason that I stick with costs is that there are a LOT of "not for profit" organizations that actually ARE for profit...the profit to the organizers and employees. It has not been unheard of where salaries and perks consume almost the entire budget and those making contributions for a good cause are being flim-flammed with fraud.

How much do you think Sally Struthers got? How about the poor African kids?

And Norway is also almost completely independent of fossil fuels, even though she is one of the largest producers for the rest of the "burn, baby, burn world."

Alas, I am probably older than most here and I am weary of hearing for almost the last 50 years that "the cost of photovoltaics will soon fall to an economically feasible level." Maybe if my lifespan was a planned 1,000 years, I would be more sanguine.

But then the Chinese are rather remarkable at pulling off economic miracles aren't they?

And then of course, I don't know how many of you remember that nuclear was soon going to make electricity "too cheap to meter."(I knew a girl like that once...or was it a guy?)

I think the three funniest words have become: "Call your Congressman."

Unless you have a a satchelful of money for him, your Congressman's ears are elsewhere.

Remember, energy companies have the de-facto power to force countries to WAR, to have leaders assasssinated, and to desevrate the planet whenever and wherever they wish. That is power that Roman emperors didn't have.

So while I applaud the goal of renewable energy, the largest and most powerful companies the Earth has ever seen are united in making sure nothing meaningful ever happens until the last drop and cubic inch of fossil fuel that can be taken from the planet profitably IS taken.

Yes, NIMBY sucks, but if all your neighbors are playing the same game, you must also or else YOU will get all their garbage.

Re: NEWPORT BEDBUGS

Home away from home

Newport is perfectly safe even strolling at 3 AM, it is the most conveniect place in the County for carless shopping and the gardens are beautiful, (or they were before management forgot to turn on sprinklers this Summer so all the lawns are dead...just like projectrs,) the hallways are regularly recarpeted and wallpapered, every building has 24 hour doormen. And what can be easier than an on-site PATH station. By JC standards, the apartments are spacious and bright.

But it is NO Longer the place I moved into mainly because of incompetent management, bugs, and the mass renting to temporatry visa workers and conversions to student dormitories...resulting in the MASSIVE turnover that ENIGMA implies.
WHere once the hallways were vacuumed DAILY, they are now done MONTHLY.

The physical plant is also deteriorating and it takes competent management to deal with failing cheap infrastructure and cheap is Lefrak's middle name. Wait til the plumbing starts going pipe after pipe. Perhaps that broken water main TWICE in the same place next to Target is indicative of worse BIG problems to come.

The thought of bedbugs so frightens me that I hope to get out before the inevitability crawls into bed with me.

I PRAY that neither neighbor moves away anytime soon although at least 4 apartments on my floor have changed hands in the last year.

Bad enough for renters, but sympathise with some unwary soul who took out a half million dollar mortgage for a one bedroom and cannot dump it in this makret AND finds bedbugs. Talk about "jump off the terrace" material!

If nobody knows, then it is impossible to talk about how to run the shelter.
