I stopped in today. It?s great to have a market like this in JSQ. Has all the essentials. Clean place, friendly employees. Prices seemed a bit high though.

Just a technical note, we are not going to be getting the storm surge from Jose if it remains offshore. Storm surge happens when the center of the storm moves onshore.

The Jersey Shore could see some minor coastal flooding due to high waves during high tide cycles over the next couple of days, but that's not storm surge.

Apparently the PATH actually loses a ton of money every year? I find that hard to believe given the limited service and the fact that it's packed for every commute. Where is all the money going? I wonder how much more ridership they would need just to break even.

Every transit system in the United States operates at a loss. Transit doesn't make money on our fares. The money goes to salaries and benefits for employees, electricity (lots of electricity), security, maintenance, all of that track and signal work. All of that is probably half the cost of running PATH. The other half is fixing the escalators at Grove Street over and over and over again.

10 minute headways has been the standard Saturday service on the 33rd line for years, except during occasional track or signal work.

10-min headways would be an improvement on the Nwk-WTC line. I think 15 min was the typical Saturday interval, but there's been work on that line just about every weekend for several years, I forget what "normal" is supposed to be there.

I used to be able to get a last-minute car on a weekday. no more.

The fleet is shrinking and there are mostly premium cars "living" in downtown JC. No cars at all in Journal Square anymore. I've been using zipcar far less recently than I had in the past, because I don't need a BMW for a trip to Trader Joe's. I tweeted zipcar about this before and their response is along the lines of "oh sry lol"

Not far from the light rail.

http://www.traderjoes.com/announcement/hoboken-nj-opening-2017

It's 1.7 miles from the Hoboken stop and 1.5 miles from the Second Street stop - a good 30 minute walk.

or you could get off at the 9th St stop and hoof it from there, I just saved you half the walk

Ohhh! That's great - I didn't check that stop - silly me!

Pro Tip! Save another 1/10 mile by going to Lincoln Harbor instead.

Under contract, and need to get an inspection and oil tank sweep. Anyone have recommendations for a good, thorough, professional inspector and/or oil tank scanning company? Or, alternatively, any you'd recommend avoiding?

I'm the same. I stopped by Sunday evening around 7:00 and the place was busy but not crowded. At checkout there were two people in front of me on line.

Will definitely go back to try the ramen bar and scoop up some sweets. This place may save me a few trips to Mitsuwa.

Regardless, I don't see that project ever getting off the ground...

You, uh, do know it's already in progress, right?

Part of the Harrison Station rebuild is to increase capacity to 10 cars.

It will take years, but it's already happening.

It's happening on the NWK-WTC line. Bodhipooh is saying it won't happen on he 33rd line for ages, and I agree.

Track condition on PATH, I guess.

And then also PATH cross-honoring NJT passengers because of the NJT derailment yesterday.

Perfect recipe for an ugly commute.

My understanding is Federal regs preclude PATH trains running more frequently until the signal system has been updated. So it seems a fine point to say the signal upgrade is not mandated. But mandate or no, more reliable and frequent PATH service is badly needed.

Not to get too in the weeds, but the mention of "mandates" reminded me. There are two systems being installed here. One is required whether PATH wants to increase capacity or not, the other is needed to get the capacity to run more trains:

1. Positive Train Control (PTC) is required by federal law. All passenger and freight railroads in the U.S. must have PTC installed and operational by 2018. PTC addresses safety issues, but does not significantly impact capacity.

2. Communications-based train control (CBTC) will allow trains to run closer together, thereby increasing the effective capacity of the lines.

The signal work PATH has been doing for the past two years or so has been to install the systems for both. Here's a cute video the PA posted on youtube last year about the signal upgrades:

Incidents like this that I've witnessed usually happen when the attacked individual (allegedly) messed with someone else's man/woman. Often baseball bats and/or bottles are used.

West Side Avenue Dairy Queen, if I'm staying in town to find the tree. Got a really nice Douglas fir there a few years ago. 7', $45 IIRC.

Usually go out to tree farms in western NJ and saw one down ourselves.

Same at the Conti School. Two districts vote here and there's one machine for each district. Over an hour wait right now.

Never had to wait more than 4-5 minutes in the past, even in the record breaking 2008 election. This is a surprise.

One by one they will. It's been happening downtown. Five old vinyl-clad houses on my downtown block have been refaced (or just had the vinyl removed to show the brick beneath) in the past 3-4 years. Just that made a huge difference on the appearance of the block overall. I'd rather wait and see each old home spruced up than see he neighborhood wiped clean and these ugly temporary boxes pop up everywhere.

Wrong. They had always been there. They were just brought back after the Sandy damage.

Quote:

- but the Flag of Mississippi should be replaced with some other version - also a few other states are questionable.

Deal with it. No state gets to tell another state what flag to use. A state flag has meaning and significance to its citizens. In time, they [the people of Mississippi] may choose to alter their flag. That day has not yet arrived.

Quote:

This National Park after all is in Jersey City - which is one of the most diverse cities on earth - so we don't need this redneck flag.

WRONG. Liberty State Park is NOT a NATIONAL park. It is a STATE park.

Quoting because this is the correct answer.

Also, just to be painfully technical, Mississippi's flag is essentially a combination of the first and second confederate national flags. Georgia's current state flag is based on the first confederate national flag. Alabama's is based on confederate battle flags. So this is an issue that spreads beyond just Mississippi.
