Jersey City councilman questions timing of Mariano Vega's resignation.

Published: Monday, September 13, 2010, 3:41 PM Updated: Monday, September 13, 2010, 3:41 PM

Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega resigned today, one business day after the deadline to trigger a special election. The City Council will appoint a replacement.

Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega?s resignation today has left one of his colleagues asking why now.

Vega was among the 46 individuals charged last year in a massive political corruption and money laundering sting. The then-council president refused to surrender his seat, but eventually gave up the presidency. Vega sent an e-mail around 5 p.m. Friday saying he was resigning effective today.

Had Vega resigned during business hours Friday, his seat would have been up for grabs in a special election in November.

Ward E Councilman Steven Fulop, who has been calling for Vega to step down, said his resignation was overdue. ?I think he should have done it a year ago and I think to do it at 5:01 (Friday), one minute after the deadline speaks to how they protect their power base and how they protect the system,? Fulop said. ?They are manipulating the political process as always.?

Vega has not returned a call seeking comment.

Wednesday is the last day for candidates seeking office in the special election to file petitions. The Hudson County Clerk?s Office said it had not yet received notice of Vega?s resignation. Vega submitted a formal, signed letter this morning after the city?s Law Department told him the e-mail was not sufficient.

Fulop said he felt Vega resigned after the close of business Friday to prevent a special election for his seat. ?They know what the law is and they did it intentionally,? Fulop said. ?I think that speaks to this whole political culture in Jersey City.?

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy was in a meeting and not immediately available to respond to the accusations, but he did release a statement earlier this afternoon about Vega?s resignation. ?We thank Mariano for his decades of public service to the city and the people of Jersey City, and we wish the best for him and his family,? Healy said in a statement.

Because Jersey City?s governing body is non-partisan the council will select a replacement. ?We?re working with the City Council to try and build a consensus for a replacement for Mariano, so that this important position in city government does not stay vacant for any prolonged period of time,? Healy said.

Vega was among a number of Jersey City officials being targeted by a recall movement. Riaz Wahid, a member of the recall group, said he hopes a suitable replacement will be named. ?I hope the mayor and City Council president will solicit resumes from qualified and talented citizens to fill Mr. Vega?s position,? Wahid said. ?They must keep this process open and fair since they took away the opportunity to elect from the people of Jersey City.?

Yeah, don't give the voters a chance to have a say who the replacement is.

Vega's one last kick to the sack of the tax-paying residents.

Further, nationwide research conducted in 2002 and 2004 revealed that the general public holds the belief that African Americans are involved in a greater percentage of violent crime than the official statistics actually indicate.[41]"

Right. And this stereotype is because (unfortunately for those African-Americans who are law-abiding) a majority of crime is committed by them. Same for Hispanics.

This is not racism, but fact. And I'm sorry if it upsets the Utopian state of mind some people think we're living in.

You don't need a 4-way stop. Those are both one-way streets, so you only need a "two-way" stop. For that, you only need to add one sign.

For $40 bucks and a steel channel stanchion from Home Depot, this problem can be taken care of:

traffic signs...

I'm totally serious about this. On the one hand, someone blowing through the stop could not legally get a ticket because the sign would not be "official". On the other hand, 99% of the drivers would stop. Additionally, the way JC is governed, it would be years before anyone from the city noticed, plus you get your stop sign asap, not after a 6 month "traffic engineering study" and budget appropriation.

So the generally oblivious and spoiled sense of entitlement that pervades the lives of so many of the people living downtown has now progressed to the point where the willful breaking of the law is now classified as "a privilege".

Thank you. You have further confirmed that the overall sense of contempt I hold for so many of you is not misplaced.

Actually, there are plenty of trees that have been planted, they're just not big yet. The first ones are however, much larger than when they were first planted about 8 years ago.

Give it another 8-10 years and parts of LSP will be like walking through a forest.

Take a look at historic photos of Central Park just after completion and you'll see what I mean.

What I still cannot believe is the fact that this design was chosen at all.

And not because anyone may think it's unattractive or in the wrong location, but for the simple fact that the "empty sky" it supposedly frames will soon be anything but empty.

Forget "view corridors" and aesthetics; this design fails on a basic conceptual level which is what the base-line of good memorial design should aspire to.

Excellent question.

The city was all so ready to take the Golden Cicada property from it's Owner to give it to St. Peter's Prep to expand their football field, but are silent about using eminent domain now to take a property for a legitimate public use.

Another example of something stinking to high heaven in City Hall besides Healy's whiskey breath.

Same as 111 First Street. Developer Goldman couldn't wait to knock it down and it's a vacant site 3 years later.

Marchetto is a decent architect who has done countless projects in Hoboken and several in JC including Gulls Cove and the small building at the corner of Green and Grand. He has proven he can do decent mid-rise as well as smaller buildings that fit well in a historical context.

And that's why his comments are so disturbing.

He's officially sold his soul to the devil.

What additional outlet fee? They just sent me two of the (very small) boxes for my 2 sets that I don't have HD service on for free. Got a letter in the mail explaining the change to all digital and a number to call. They will give up to 2 of these boxes for no additional monthly change.

I neither love nor hate Comcast, but I've got cable, internet and phone service and have rarely ever had an outage. I'd probably switch to FIOS except the money-grubbing Dolan family (Cablevision Owners) will not allow FIOS to carry their channels sports channels (MSG, MSG+) in HD. So that means no one with FIOS can watch any of the 3 local hockey teams in HD. for me, that's a deal breaker.

Re: Newark Avenue StreetScape

I don't have time to list them or link them, but there are many, many similar set-ups where the merchants were initially against closing a street to vehicular traffic and making it pedestrian only.

After the fact, they are thrilled with the results which have improved the areas in just about every way. In just about every case, they would NEVER go back to a trafficked street.

The scale and character of the pedestrian friendly street is what makes old Europe so enjoyable to be in and what Bloomberg is trying to emulate in NYC.

It is also why, IMO, the idea of leaving the passage between Newark and CCD where that building burnt down (the 'paseo' proposal) seemed like a great idea and would have only helped the area. Anyone who just sees that space as an alley does not have vision or an understanding that some of the best urban spaces are the 'leftover' spaces between buildings..... but I digress....

Go look up the crime stats for Curries Woods before and after the projects were torn down. You'll find that while the people living there are lower income, crime has dropped dramatically.

And your post about tearing down Grove Pointe because the liquor store got robbed is as "apples and oranges" as anything I've ever read.

Your argument is nothing more than irrational race-baiting.

Believe me, as bad as it is, it is NOTHING like it was....

15 years ago, the "festival" lasted 4 days (Thursday through Sunday) and for a couple of years it was set up at the foot of Jersey Ave., just south of Grand. This was before the hospital and light rail were built.

The noise, filth, fights, etc. were beyond description.

Supposed to look like Bluestone. Colored concrete, when mixed and finished properly, can be a very close and suitable substitution for real Bluestone. See the walkways in Van Vorst Park as an example. The concrete work done on Newark and being done on CCD is not very good at all.

More disturbing on CCD is that I see the new traffic lights and poles are the same aluminum style as the old ones. I really would have thought the new ones would be the black (fake) old style to match what's down around Exchange Place..... It makes me wonder what style the new streetlights are going to be.

While I completely agree that race should be part of a physical description, I will argue that here in JC, it's not completely necessary.

Seriously, how much crime here is committed by whites and Asians?

The way I view it, the JJ descriptions include "black or Hispanic" by default.
