Re: Several local politicians arrested on corruption charges

Home away from home

Last night I saw on the news that the Mayor of Secaucus resigned. The deputy Mayor, who is taking over for now, said, regarding the Mayor "Yeah. He's a real stand up guy and did what's right for the city."... ummmm.... ok?

By the way, what do Healy's weight and looks have to do with anything? I'd rather judge him solely on his actions (or inaction)... and, not for nothing, but he's not even that fat.

Re: Jersey City Heights - Which is a good Toddler Day Care?
Home away from home

I would recommend Baby Einstein for sure. My son has been there off and on for over a year and he loves it. The best thing is that they are very flexible with your schedule. Also, they are fixing up the space next door and are planning on having their own playground. All of the women who work there are friendly and kind and will talk to you if are having any issues.

The cons are the same I think at any daycare...sometimes I wonder if he is getting enough individual attention. He always gets a cold or whatever is going around. He picks up the less than desirable habits of the other kids, etc.

But, as far as part time care for a toddler goes... I say go check them out... you will probably like it.

My husband and I have lived in the heights for about four years as well. I lived downtown for four years before the move to the heights. We love it here - and could afford to buy more here than just a condo downtown. However, the huge thing lacking is that people are strange up in JC! In that - none of the neighbors speak to each other. We live on a really nice block -but, when people see you, they look down or away or hurry into their houses. I still remember when we moved in, I thought (being from the midwest) that all our neighbors would come over within the week with a "housewarming casserole" and a welcome. My husband (born/bred Brooklynite) laughed at my hopes...and he was right - we never saw a soul.

here I am first time owner - ready to establish roots...and everyone runs away. I think it is just our facebook/online society. I have 300 facebook friends, but very few real friends, know what I'm saying?

Then again, in my imaginary neighbors' defense - I see moving trucks around now and then but I never pay attention to who is moving in, who is renting, who just bought, etc. Maybe that is just city life.

Sorry for the novel - but - maybe the heights could be more fun if some of us got together now and then? I know we would LOVE to meet another couple in the area with similar interests. Or, I would love to meet a woman in the heights who wants to hang out and do "girl things" now and then?

May I ask where in the Heights you live?

We have been on Booraem Avenue for a little over a year and have gotten pretty friendly with some of our neighbors and other people in the neighborhood. When we go to Rizzo's now, the ladies give my son a cookie if "he's a good boy and eats all his pizza." At Andrea Salumeria, the guys always remember my husband's last purchase and ask him how it was. When the priest from St. Nicholas sees us he throws holy water at us and gives us a blessing (I am not kidding). Maybe having a kid helps break the ice for some people... I'm not sure, but I have found my neighbors, the new and the old, pretty welcoming. Now, don't get me wrong, I've encountered plenty of the head down types too. The dude next door, I can see into his house from my living room and he still won't say hi to me! I finally gave up.

I am so glad I grew out of that and glad that HE wasn't dangerous because I believe I may have followed him. This reminds me too, of women who get arrested because their guy is dealing and the woman gets 25 years because she has no information to trade. The guy gets out in 2 - 5 - 7. What a tragedy Amanda didn't have a few more years to mature.

Jeez, lady. She watched this man kill an innocent man and a police officer!. There is a bigger issue there than just immaturity. My 4 year-old niece would know that is wrong!

Mary, I don't like the way people come down on you around here, but I have to say I think your above post is WAY off the mark.

I do agree with you about the look of the GS Building. It looks to me like it wasn't finished at the top. I don't get the top of it. Was the original plan for it to come to a point at the top? I don't understand why it starts angling in slightly at the top and then just stops and is flat.

Up close though, I do think it is very nice.

I saw this on the news last night. They said her father was driving the car with her in the passenger seat and he just kept driving her straight to the hospital... probably a smart move.

I've lived in JC for about 4 years now and have noticed that crime is more rampant in the spring and summer... maybe because kids are out of school and hanging out more, maybe because people are outside, maybe because it's hot, I don't know what it is..

Well, a lot of people walk it... a lot. It's good exercise to walk up it as well. If you are looking to get to the path station, there is bus that runs between journal square and hoboken via the heights.

Supposedly a huge staircase is going to be built at 2nd street, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Another option is biking or walking to jsq. It's about a 20 min. walk from the heights, but at least it's flat.

The stolen bike thread just reinforces that message. I know, we live in a city, yadda yadda but that doesn't make it ok.

And many other neighborhoods throughout JC have not had the same turnaround...yet.

Paving a housing project and putting up a Barnes & Noble ain't the answer.

Then you haven't been around nyc or surrounding. Trust me, Barnes & Noble is your Beacon of good location. You see a upcoming B&N sign in the negborhood, it's time to take another mortage out. There is only 2 B&N in Brooklyn and guess where they are located.

In JC, there is only one at Newport.

Looking for a pat on the back is nothing more than human nature. You see it a lot with children... not as much with adults because we all are just children with learned behavior.

But everyone likes to get credit or compliments... what's so wrong with that?

Re: What location was your bike stolen from (time, type of lock, etc)?
Home away from home

My husband's bike was stolen from the front of the barber shop on Grove in the evening about 3 years ago. He did the ol' lean on the front window without locking it maneuver while running inside to watch my stepson's haircut, thinking he can keep an eye on it... it was a fixed gear vintage Gitane frame... he loved that bike, but someone got off with it in no time.

A few months ago, I was looking out the front window of our place in the Heights at about 11pm and I saw two kids running down the street with what I thought were hubcaps... they were running so fast and silently. It turns out the next day my stepson discovered the front wheel of his bmx, which was locked to the side of the house (the bike, not the wheel), was gone. They actually came in through our gate which really bugged me and the fact that I saw them! I had just happened to be moving the curtain to the window to let some air in and looked out.

Lessons learned. Lock the bike at all times and the wheel too.

I also think sometimes that having a driving affords people the opportunity to get a second car when really they only need one. So, they keep the second car in the driveway and the other one on the street. AND there are people who will park in the street especially if it's the spot in front of their house and leave their driveway empty for several hours until their spouse comes homes. OR, if their driveway fits two cars, deep, they will still park on the street because they don't want to have to hassle and move their car when their spouse comes home and blocks them in. C'mon. you know people do this. I see on my block all the time.

Re: Pedestrian down at Marin and Montgomery
Home away from home
Home away from home

I have had the experience of literally standing in the crosswalk, six inches of snow on the ground, carrying, I mean actually lifting my stroller with the baby in it, and have stood there, watching the cars go by not stopping for me...

These recent accidents have made me drive much slower in Jersey City this past week. I know it's no excuse, but when you commute around north Jersey in a car, it's a constant chase, trying to beat the lights, trying to get around buses, trying to pass people making left turns...etc. A drive that should take 25 minutes can take 40 just because of bad timing with lights. Sometimes you have to sit through 3 cycles of a light just to get through. Most of our surrounding areas are light on pedestrians, so it's not something you think about (I drive up Tonnelle Ave, every day... very rarely does someone cross Tonnelle)...

Basically, I am not giving an excuse, but maybe an explanation as to why people drive the way they do. You almost have to drive aggressively to get where you need to go... around traffic, through road work, etc. So, I've been trying to be extra concerned when I do finally come up Paterson Plank and I hit Palisades Avenue... okay...time to beware of people.

Re: Video shows hit-and-run on Marin

The news channels love it when there is video available of someone getting hurt. The more video of a crime occurring they can show, the better. This probably makes the city of Jersey City less willing to release or want to make such videos available to the public because it is not a good reflection on our city or our police department. (or citizens for that matter)

I just watched the footage. It took me a few times to see where it was happening... I really feel for the victim and his family and I hope he recovers. I also hope someone caught the license plate of the truck.

that's ridiulous....20 minutes of their time could solve this crime...

OMG that is ridiculous! This driver COULD have killed someone... the only reason he/she didn't is pure chance. They are giving up the chance to catch a potentially dangerous individual/s to save 20 minutes?

Infuriating.

Yes, this was my experience too during the last election... My place is the school on Franklin Avenue in the Heights. Some of Manzo's team were downright obnoxious... yelling at me to vote for them as I walked by. And then I heard them yell something about "no more alcoholics"... it was just such a trashy scene. I thought, if I was still undecided at this point, you definitely would not be getting my vote. Did community $$ go towards that?

I see that a good deal of space is now behind glass, and can only be accessed by lock and key. Who's bright idea was it to put glass there (you know that won't last a season) and who determines what merits getting posted in that coveted space? Who gets the key? Who's throat gets choked when something behind the glass is out of date? And who determined that the community at large would be best served by having a smaller amount of space than they previously had?

I bet the answer to much of the above is "parkie."
Kisses.

If in fact it is was parkman who changed the bulletin boards I say good. Those boards were eyesores filled with staples on top of staples..

In my opinion, parkman can do what he wants to vvp park... without him, that place would be an overgrown trash pit.
