Re: Jersey City considers to charge college students a fee to fund city services
Home away from home
Home away from home

Clearly, students are the reason this town cannot pull itself out of it's own feces.

1) If you'd like to apply such a fee, it should be by square foot and should be applied to the university directly. Of course that looks a lot like a property tax.

2) Churches and museums are not-for-profits as well. With St. Peters... that's already a church-run organization. Community organizations holding fairs, parades, concerts, lectures, etc., are also.

Why not extend this burden to ALL such moochers? Because Sottolano is afraid of them as many of their constitutents... unlike students... are vocal community members who vote.

3) Demonstrate the burden more clearly: just how much "city services" do these school consume? And what relation is that to STUDENTS, as opposed to school/ administrative/ staff choices?

But really... let's not delude ourselves into thinking the City Council really cares to think this through.

This ordinance will never withstand scrutiny.

Jersey City considers endorsing call to allow cities to charge college students a fee to fund city services
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
By MELISSA HAYES
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Jersey City Ward A Councilman Michael Sottolano has introduced a resolution backing the State League of Municipalities' effort to assess fees on college students for use of city services.

The resolution urges the state Legislature to pass a law establishing annual fees of $100 for full-time students and $50 for part-time students.

Jersey City is home to St. Peter's College, New Jersey City University and Hudson County Community College, all of which are tax-exempt but are covered by the city's Police and Fire departments.

"We receive no revenue at all in any way, shape or form, and they certainly use a tremendous amount of city services," Sottolano said at Monday's council caucus meeting.

Montclair Mayor Jerry Fried presented the resolution, which was adopted, during the League's annual conference in November.

On Monday, Jersey City Councilman-at-large Mariano Vega took issue with the resolution.

"I think towns that have colleges in them are honored towns," he said, adding that students spend money at local restaurants and businesses.

Sottolano said about 15 municipalities have adopted resolutions.

Bill Dressel, executive director of the League, said a state bill hasn't been drafted, but that the League hopes to get a sponsor after the Legislature reconvenes after the budget hearings in May.

The City Council is set to vote on the resolution tonight.

I didn't notice the bar when i moved to this part of downtown but I don't think it is unacceptable how the people who go to Indios behave. I am so tired of finding beer bottles in the street, people getting drunk and hitting cars, large groups of men in their like 40's hanging out on the street.. you are in your 40's what the hell are you doing. No i don't like drunk 20 something year olds but at least i can kinda understand that.
don't we have hookers who go back by cresent court b/c of that place? This makes me racist tho.

1st streetguy... jesus please do that. you know it is only going to get worse as it gets warmer. I was yelling at them to shut up and they couldn't hear me because they are yelling like drill sgts.

when i lived there... it was pretty much just as you say.

they fight and siht everywhere.

Great stuff!

* The yuppie pricks should move and stop crying about the crime.
* The old school bozos should move and stop crying about the gentrification.
* The hipster dorks should move and stop crying about the lack of organic brew pubs.
* The lazy thugs should move and stop crying about losing their customer base.
* Ditto for the small businesses.
*The grammas should move and stop crying about how much the neighborhood has changed.
*The cops and firemen can't move because they all live in Bayonne already.

Who's left? An eye for an eye left the whole town behind. But stopped crying about it, at least.

Yeah. I understand. I used to live across from Indios. What a pain in my ass to see all that fighting and scumbaggery with only occasionally a timely police response.

im assuming you're a lucky 7 kind of guy. beach blanket bingo night is coming up. enjoy, buddy!

If 1stStreetGuy lived on the corner of Montgomery and Washington, he'd be complaining about the noise from York Street Tavern and Grand Banks. I don't know who goes to those places, but I know they get a diverse crowd of people who TEND NOT TO drive on the sidewalks, throw bottles, stab each other, etc.

1stStreetGuy lives on 1st Street so he's concerned about Indio's and Latin Lounge. The Music Box and The Barge Inn have had a few incidents, as have Indio's and the LL. Actually, The Barge Inn seems to attract working-class white patrons.

This seems NOT to be about race, but about class and whether bar patrons know when to shut up, go home, and not stab each other.

If you're still having trouble, you can get help at the NJ Room of the Main Public Library to determine the Lot #, etc.

Or just call the JC Tax office and they can help you over the phone, as they have in the past for me... after I waited a little while...

Agreed. I would have recommended that site as well.

Also: it's brutal stories like this (but not only this) that are the reason this website should stop being about "downtown JC" as it's logo suggests. It's time to evolve and cover the whole town.

The original poster included the neighborhood ("Bergen Lafayette"). That goes to unfairly segmenting the story into a category: not-for-the-gentrifying-downtown-reader.

This is a disservice to the community of Bergen Lafayette and portrays the downtown reader in a very narrow and unfair fashion.

I'm not suggesting the OP was doing this intentionally, but as the OP seems linked to the Jersey Journal, s/he must understand that headlines do tell part of a story. Here, I think it is subtly tell people to shuffle along.

Go to Dr. Cynthia Leung at Riverview Dentistry on Hudson St in Hoboken. It's on the corner of First Street.

She is the first dentist in a long time to give an honest assessment of non-invasive (non-root canal, etc) treatment.

I'm not kidding. You want Dr. Leung.

JERSEY CITY - Sixteen people filed to run in the April 20 Jersey City Board of Education election as of Monday's deadline.

The election is to fill three seats on the nine-member board as members serve staggered three-year terms. The responsibilities of board members include voting on school policy and approving annual the school district budget.

The 16 candidates running for election are: Kevin Armstrong, Sebastian D'Amico, L. Terry Dehere, Evelyn Farmer, Carol L. Lester, Gerald Maurice Lyons, Gerald McCann, June A. Mulqueen, John R. Muniz, Marimer Navarrete, Aura Ordonez, Hiral Patel, Anthony Sharperson, Angel Valentin, Sterling Waterman, and Arthur Zigman.

Dehere, McCann and Valentin are the incumbents running for another term.

However, the list could shrink as candidates have until this coming Monday, March 8, to withdraw their names from contention. - RK

This post above from March 3rd and all the comments below it should have its own thread.

It's confusing to see "city hires felon McCann" when really the conversation has become "dump felon McConn at April 20th election."

Someone want to set that up?

FedUp: maybe you should make your argument in a new post to highlight your concerns.

Re: City Council Votes To Limit Reintroduction Of Failed Measures

what are the costs and time required to introduce resolutions and ordinances? is it necessary that they go before the entire chambers and accept public comments?

if there is minimal cost and minimal time lost in reintroducing resolutions and ordinances... then this ordinance is pure bull.

(it probably is anyway).

one simple point behind reintroducing measures is to put THE OTHER council members on record as opposing the measures. etc. obviously, they don't want that.

sometimes you can get the JC library's wifi in Van Vorst park. (you'll need a library card a wifi access password, which are free). but, i don't think there's an outlet there.

So, i suggest you go to the backyard at Legal Beans on Grand Street near Warren

Re: Where does North Jersey end and South Jersey begin?
Home away from home

Four regions.

South:
Draw a slightly curving line from White Horse to Island Beach State Park. The line should be north of White Horse and New Egypt but south of Toms River. South of that line is South Jersey.

Central:
Draw a line from Lambertville to where the Raritan River meets 287, and then follow 287/440? east to the Amboys area. Lambertville should be south of that line.

Stuff between the first line and that line is Central Jersey.

North:
Everything north of that Lambertville line is North Jersey.

Shore:
Then, follow the Parkway from the Amboys: towns on the Parkway or east of it are the Shore.

JerseyCityPower: relax. Terrorist violence is bad from right and left. Extremism is bad from both. You shouldn't be so upset about right-wing terror and be, in short, an apologist for left-wing terror. That is, unless of course you think it the core of revolutionary action. (BTW yes I know that Thomas Jefferson and Nelson Mandela, etc., once supported violent struggle against unjust regimes. That is not really the point if that's where this is going).

Anywy: This thread really ISN'T about a bad conversation with people I'm glad I don't have to have this conversation with in person... It's about how this story ISN'T news. It's just a bad restaurant's poor taste and terrible menu and, probably, a wealthy right-wing Cuban's rejection of that restaurant for that stupid reason alone. When he should reject it for being terrible.

Whoever keeps posting this JJ crap... Stop.

Correct, I didn't really think it was an Inn. I was having some fun. But if they bought the building (condos or aparments there?), then a b&b is possible. Quiet corner. Yard. Etc.

But, I do believe they are trying to project a certain image, though I am not upset about it. I'm happy about it. The Alehouse needed some serious rebranding.

Thank you both for your brevity and clarity of purpose.

I wasn't freaking out or acting a little insane. Perhaps the behavior of others on this site has your hair standing on end or your nerves on edge.

I was simply interpreting the words I read, their meaning, and the impression created. When logos are made and brand names are chosen, image is important. Etc. You know this. I was providing my interpretation of that impression.

That is not insane. That is the content which fuels a discussion on a discussion-board.

But, thank you for making my return to this discussion board so unpleasant.

The Hamilton Inn.

Ok. So they're too self-important to be called a pub..., but as they've purchased whatever social cache the Alehouse has left, they've called themselves an "Inn". They're trying to tell us they've been around awhile. That they're established, etc.

But do they provide accommodation. Are they a boarding house or a bed-and-breakfast? Or are they just old-school Hamilton Park. Redux?
