Nice find, thanks for posting!

The video only mentioned the effects on slowing traffic while making turns--it didn't even touch on the other advantages for pedestrians and limiting illegal parking into the crosswalk.

Too bad we'll never see any sort of pedestrian-friendly improvements in JC.

You guys need to spring for some silverware. What kind of a restaurant gives its customers plastic to eat with? Not good.

Let's take a second here to make a correction:

The OP stated that the stemware is plastic. Stemware is what you drink out of: wine glasses, cups, and so on.

This should not be confused with flatware, which is what you eat with: forks, spoons, and knives.

At Victoria's, where we ate last week, the stemware (again: wine glasses and water cups) were plastic. The flatware (forks and knives, remember?!) were metal.

Now, some of you may not be fond of any plastic on the table if you're going out to eat at a restaurant. Understood. But even a place like Presto's (which everyone--myself included--seems to love) provides plastic cups for the water. I'd still like to see actual glass for the wine glasses, even at a BYOB joint.

The food at Victoria's was very good, and the cheesecake we had for dessert was excellent. And for the price, I found it a bargain. Think of it as an upscale pizzeria and you'll be more in line to meet your expectations.

Walked through yesterday wearing boots and didn't have a problem.

However, I was disappointed to see the footprints in the snow away from the pathways that went directly through all the shrubbery. Some of the footprints landed directly on top of shrubs and you could see that the plants had been crushed.

I understand that it can be difficult to see where to walk with all the snow, but this just looked like lazy steps to cut across the park.

O'Hara's on 1st & Marin also does some weekend band shows. The weeknight bookings usually gear more toward singer/songwriter cover acts, but they will book a full night of original bands if you can put together a show and convince them you can draw some people.

The "stage" is small and the PA is brought in just for the sets, but it's something:

Coming from Canada, the slow checkout lines and apathetic cashiers as Shop Rite should make you feel right at home!

FATHER OF THE YEAR AWARD:

To the dad giving his toddler a piggy-back ride on his shoulders walking down the icy (and partially uncleared) sidewalks along Jersey Ave today.

I understand if you don't want to make your kid walk in the slush, but what makes you think she won't get sent headfirst into the cement if you slip?

Stopped in yesterday for lunch. Only a few vegetarian options, so I got the Eggplant burger. It was excellent... different than anything I have had before but a nice combination of ingredients and prepared well on a delicious fresh bun. The french fries were pretty amazing too. Definitely recommended.

Oh, and the staff seem like some really nice dudes, for what it's worth.

I thought everybody knew that the proper retaliation for someone who has parked like an @$$hole is to break their windshield wipers. Annoying enough to make your point, but doesn't do any permanent damage that can't be fixed with a trip to Pep Boys.

I wouldn't be surprised if the parking authority is just slow. Last year, I had my new permit finally arrive weeks after the old one expired. I had called the JCPA when the expiration was approaching and they told me not to worry about it because they were just behind on mailing the new permits.

Just hope the officers issuing tickets know about about the delay too (if that's the case again.)

Ms. Bert-

Just call Comcast and tell them you have seen a lot of great offers for FIOS and that your neighbors have switched and are raving about it. The Comcast rep should be able to come back with a better monthly price, even if it's just for a six-month "promotion." You can always call again when that's up to get another discount.

We've been doing this with Comcast for YEARS and it's kept the costs pretty reasonable.

Re: LITTERBUGS!!

The other day I was driving up 4th Street behind a JCPD cruiser. The cop stopped at the the corner of Monmouth, opened the driver's side door, and tossed an empty Dunkin Donuts cup into the street. The officer then shut the door and drove off.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to get the plate number or I would have reported it to the PD--though I can picture them laughing at me while swearing to "look into it."

With the cops leading by this example, what hope to we have to encourage ordinary citizens to stop littering?

Too many trees? I don't think so. That block of Erie is actually fairly well lit by the school-turned-condo on the east side of the street. Much of the crime in the area (car break-ins) has actually been on the block between 2nd and 3rd. And what is on both sides of the block there? CHURCHES.

I'm not saying churches cause crime, but at night they are essentially just abandoned buildings--and most of them take up close to a full block without much lighting. Crimes are a lot more likely to occur in front of an empty church than outside a residential building where someone is home and can act as a witness.

Re: Graffiti

I was impressed to see the Bank of America on Newark Ave finally put up a hard plastic cover over the desk area in the ATM vestibule. I always wondered how many times they would have to re-paint that semicircle around the complimentary tethered pen before they bothered to figure out a better way.

That always struck me too--the tags were entirely in that exact area around the pen-on-a-string. It's like people would go in to use the ATM and think, "Hey, there's a pen--AND a wall? May as well write on it!" Nobody ever bothered to bring their own pen and write anywhere else. Just that 30" radius that the bank-provided pen could reach.

A few that may not have been mentioned:

Suprisingly, Soul Flavors on Grove St & Bay has a "meatless vegetarian strudel" that is very good.

Also, the new owner of 3 Boys Pizza & Falafel on Monmouth between 3rd & 4th has added a number of vegetarian and vegan options to the menu. He can make a vegan version of just about anything on the menu--pizza included!

As far as vegan brunch options, Subia's on Jersey Ave & Wayne has a number of choices. Service isn't quick, but the folks there are focussed on the organic/vegetarian/vegan lifestyle and can take care of your needs easily.

We've used an easier method of unloading our unwanted stuff for a while now: The front stoop.

We had a number of old books that we no longer wanted and put them out on the stoop on Saturday morning. By Monday, they were all gone. Another time, an unneeded twin mattress and under-bed frame left at the curb were gone in about an hour.

In Jersey City, if something of any any possible value is left out for the taking, it will be.

Re: LITTERBUGS!!

Another problem is with renters (and landlords) who just don't give a damn. Legally, it is the landlord's responsibility to maintain the area around their building, but many of them just don't bother with regular cleanup or maintenance.

I know of a number of buildings on my block that have filthy sidewalks and gated front "yards" that choked with piles of rotting leaves and debris. Often the building is a rental and the tenants living there just don't care enough to clean up if the landlords don't take care of it for them.

Personally, even though I only rent my brownstone, I try and sweep up our stoop and sidewalk at least once a week. I see some of my elderly neighbors outside with the broom daily, while other neighbors have stoops that look like they haven't been touched in years.

Some people care about keeping their neighborhood looking nice; others don't. Not much you can do about it other than clean up after the lazy folks. But sometimes I feel like that just encourages them more...

Re: CBS's Guide to loving Jersey City

Home away from home

The article could definitely use some editing:

The Hamilton Park description just trails off before they could finish including "Weehawken" (I guess they had to look it up and then forgot); the title for Marco & Pepe is incorrectly listed as "Mario & Pepe" (though they got the URL right); and the entry for La Rustique is just a duplicate of the description from Basic.

I would also disagree with a number of other claims, such as describing the brunch at Madame Claude's as "lacking originality"--though I suppose that's rather subjective. And once again someone implies that Zeppelin Hall is the site of regular fistfights, though in the dozens of times I've been there I have yet to see anything close to a scuffle. Can't say the same for other neighborhood bars such as Barrow St and Merchant. (I know ZH won't get much love from JC List folks though, so whatever.)

With all those holsters, who needs a purse? Just put everything in a holster and get rid of the purse. Problem solved. Probably don't even need the gun then, either.

Not sure if this has been pointed out, but these walls will interfere much more with our views of Jersey City. Not that the Goldman Sachs building is the pillar of architecture, but it's still nice to be able to look at the JC waterfront from that section of LSP. Most of that view will be totally blocked by these walls.

Interesting thing is, there was a massive rebuild of much of I-78 just west of that point a few years ago. This project seems to be centered around the massive new ramps connecting the Garden State Parkway to 78. And that's been overdue for a long, long time...always found it ridiculous that there was no way to get from the GSP northbound to 78 West without first going east and then making a U-Turn at Hillside.

Don't forget about Big Blue Meenie, the world-class recording studio on Paterson Plank Road. It's been host to a number of big-name punk and hardcore bands over the years, as well as more pop and R&B artists during its prior incarnation as Quantum Sound.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Blue_Meenie_Recording_Studio

From the "About Us" page on bigbluemeenie.com:

Quote:
Resized ImageBig Blue Meenie is one of the oldest, largest, and certainly the most prolific "Open for Hire" private production houses for rock music on the east coast.

Originally built in 1981 as "Quantum Sound" and renovated several times over the last 25 years, it's currently an 8500 square foot, 2 floor facility which houses 4 control rooms, 2 live performance spaces, 4 iso rooms and 3 editing/support DAW suites. All of which are networked together in one seamless system of file management and manipulation.
BBM also features an extensive mic locker and an impressive array of the worlds finest outboard equipment, all encased in a series of rolling rack systems, available to any room's patch bay via a single multi-pin connector.

512 Paterson Plank Road has been host to an amazing array of artists spanning all genres of music. 24 Gold and 10 Platinum records have been mixed and or recorded here over that time.

Older rock acts such as Rage Against the Machine and INXS were mixed here by Andy Wallace in the Quantum era. Newer acts like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday were recorded and mixed here by Tim Gilles and Sal Villanueva since 1998, as well as hundreds of worthy, if somewhat lesser known records which we have had the privilege to be associated with.

Some of these include some cult classics and seminal underground smashes like S.O.D., The Toadies, Jeff Buckley and Sepultura. For the last decade, the BBM Production Staff of about a dozen engineers and producers have made literally hundreds of records front to back.
