J CITY Theater presents: GUN-SHY
Home away from home
Home away from home

J CITY Theater opens their 5th season on July 21st with the Off-Broadway hit: GUN-SHY by Richard Dresser. This laugh out loud comedy is a tale about a level of passionate anger that can only be achieved through years of growth in the fertile soil of marriage. The dialogue crackles through clenched teeth as a divorced couple, Evie (Sandy Cockrell) and Duncan (Art Delo), find themselves trapped and snowbound with their new partners, Caitlin (Katherine Damigos) and Carter (Clay Cockrell). Jeffrey A. Wisniewski rounds out this sparkling cast. When the dust clears, a car has been torched, a man has been shot, and a divorce is in shambles.

Come see the show that Variety called: ?Out and out funny?wonderfully barbed.?

?A smoking hot comedy with razor sharp wit. Hilarious!? ? New York Magazine

J CITY Theater starts their 5th season with a bang!

Performances run July 21st through 31st.
Wednesdays through Saturdays
8pm
Location: The Underground Theater at St. Michaels on Hamilton Park
252 9th Street. Jersey City
Tix: $20.00
For more info: www.jcity.org

Also:
J CITY Theater is once again supporting local artist by converting the lobby into a gallery that will present an exhibition running in conjunction with the production. Beautifully curated by Hernando Rico Sanchez, the show will feature artworks by Daniel Brophy and Nelson Alvarez. ?The exhibition is a perfect complement to the production?, says Mr. Sanchez. ?It explores the relationship between reality and the deformities of our infatuated and interrupted memories.?

Audiences are encouraged to reserve their tickets online due to limited seating and a history of sold out shows. Hope to see you there!

The Underground Theater at St. Michaels Church ? Hamilton Park

On December 9th, 2009 J CITY Theater will open ?A Tuna Christmas? by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard at The Underground Theater at St. Michaels? Church at Hamilton Park in downtown Jersey City. Performances run Wednesday thru Saturday at 8pm. Audiences are encouraged to reserve tickets due to limited seating and a limited run. The show is scheduled to close on December 19th.

"A Tuna Christmas" is a marathon Christmas comedy of southern madness. The Christmas yard display contest is heating up in the small town of Tuna, Texas as neighbor fights neighbor for the most outrageous display of lights, Santas, Baby Jesus' and Rudolphs. This year however, there is a Christmas Phantom on the loose, spreading vandalism and havoc. With quick-change zaniness and quicksilver one-liners, two incredibly talented actors introduce us to 22 of the wildest citizens in Tuna.

J CITY Theater first produced "A Tuna Christmas" in 2006 and it has now become a Jersey City holiday tradition. "This show is really our gift back to Jersey City", says Executive Producer Clay Cockrell. "We have a great time doing it and our audiences love coming each year. They've become so familiar with these wild characters that they are sometimes saying the lines before we do. All year long people ask us: ' Is Tuna coming back this Christmas?' People are planning their holiday travel around performances! Maybe we should say it is a holiday addiction."

Sandy Cockrell, Artistic Director, said that the show is always a great change of pace for the company. "We pride ourselves on our motto: theater in the raw. As a production team our focus has always been on the actor and the purity of each particular story with minimal sets and costumes. However with Tuna Christmas we really have to pull out all the technical stops. The comedy is found in the quick changes and the bizarre costumes and wigs...the fact that two actors are portraying 22 characters. This show is a wild and breathless ride."

Fresh off this Fall's successful production of "Passion", J CITY Theater is taking full advantage of finally having a permanent home in Downtown Jersey City. Kellis Carroll, a founding member, says the company remains incredibly grateful to Father Vic Kennedy and everyone at St. Michaels for allowing them to create this dynamic arts space. ?We are also grateful to our Hamilton Park neighbors and friends? says Mr. Carroll, ?who have expressed their support for what we bring to the neighborhood.?

J CITY Theater (www.jcity.org) is a not-for-profit professional theater company based in Jersey City, New Jersey. It is a founding company of the Hudson County Theatre Alliance (www.hudsonall.org) and has been producing locally since 2006. Recent productions include Archibald MacLeish?s J.B., Douglas Carter Beane?s As Bees In Honey Drown, and last spring?s smash hit: The God Committee. They are also known for their engaging one act plays (Compression of a Casualty and The Spot) during HCTA?s annual One Acts Festival. J CITY Theater?s mission is to create quality, high energy theater that is told with sophisticated simplicity.

Hi DowntownSteve28,

Good question. No, this play has nothing to do with the Passion of the Christ - the movie or the Easter pageant. Not religious.

Actually, I was a little concerned when we picked the script, because of the title and the fact that our theater is under a church. I thought maybe some people would think that it is a christian play / organization. Which it is not.

It's the story of a marriage under attack - a great mix of comedy and drama.

Hope that clears it up!

Performances run Wednesdays thru Saturdays at 8pm. Audiences are encouraged to reserve tickets due to limited seating and a limited run. The show is scheduled to close on October 3rd.

?What would happen if your most private and innermost thoughts were known to the world?? This is the question that famed playwright Peter Nichols explores in his masterwork, Passion. Eleanor (Sandy Cockrell) and James (Tony Cormier) enjoy a quiet and comfortable marriage until Kate (Rocio Mendez), ?the ultimate sexual threat? comes into their lives and disrupts their safety. Not satisfied with this traditional relationship triangle, the playwright creates a pentagon by bringing Jim (Kellis Carroll) and Nell (Rachel Kerbs) on stage ? who serve as the couples alter egos - allowing the audience to view a rich texture of subterfuge and deception. Rounding out the cast is Eleanor?s fiery friend Agnes (Camille Mazurek) who is a cautionary tale against bitterness and revenge. The result is a play with wonderful complexity that never seems complicated ? only very dangerous.

It?s a comedy on the outside, but screaming on the inside. A bitterly funny, savagely honest play that unfolds like a symphony, keeping the audience on the edge of their seat. ?It?s the most dangerous script I?ve ever read?, says Executive Producer Clay Cockrell. ?I went from laughing out loud to cringing with shock that people could actually say some of these things out loud. It?s like nothing we?ve ever done.?
Continued, page 2
Page 2: J CITY Theater presents ?PASSION?

Artistic Director, Sandy Cockrell, is once again creating a rich mixture of art, music and theater. ?The play?s main character is a restorer of modern art?, says Ms. Cockrell, ?And we have filled the set and lobby with the paintings of local artist Hernando Rico Sanchez. His work resonates with the intensity of the script and fills the space with color. Also, I felt it was important to reflect the musicality of the story and thus we have created a kind of seventh character in local saxophonist Kevin Gosa who will be on stage, providing an original soundtrack for the evening. As a result, I think we have created an evening of fascinating story telling filled with art and music.?

This production marks J CITY Theater?s second season in their new permanent home, The Underground Theater at St. Michael?s Church. Kellis Carroll, a founding member, says the company remains incredibly grateful to Father Vic Kennedy and everyone at St. Michaels for their continued generosity and support. ?Staying true to our mission ?Theater in The Raw?, says Mr. Carroll, ?we are able to use this venue to create a very dynamic performance space that is unique to each show. Audiences remain surprised that such high quality productions are so close to home.?

Come join us for this great story in Jersey City's newest performance venue -
The Underground Theater.

Performances are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 8pm.

Full info:

One heart, four transplant patients and a ticking clock. The God Committee is a medical drama that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats for the entire evening. Issues of race, gender, and of course money are debated and argued while a newly harvested heart is racing toward the hospital.

Alliances are formed, broken and reformed as the committee argues, accuses, debates and ultimately votes. And just when the matter seems to be decided, the playwright upends the proceedings with theatrical dynamite.

In honoring their tradition of producing enticing material, J CITY Theater has once again chosen a script that confronts hard questions and does not settle for easy answers. You are invited to come out to the Underground Theater in Jersey City for an evening of electrifying theater.

Audiences are encouraged to book tickets now due to limited seating and a limited run.

Re: Volunteers needed. J CITY Theater.
Home away from home
Home away from home

Hi Fairviewguy,

I should have mentioned that.
Performances are Wednesday's thru Saturday's, March 25th thru April 4th. (2 weeks.)

Performances begin at 8pm and Volunteers will need to be there at 7pm. The show is 90 minutes long.

So essentially we are looking for 1 hour of your time (7pm to 8pm) and you don't have to commit to every performance, just let me know which ones you can work.

Much appreciated!
Clay
