Re: New Mexican Food Cart Downtown

I'm completely behind more street food. More often than not, these are these are hard working folks that cook one or two things really well for a great price. Somehow I doubt there's much overlap between the lets grab at taco at the cart versus the $10 grande double soy latte plus stale danish decision.

I only heard through hearsay, but I believe there are a limited number of permits so there's no worry of being overrun. I think we could easily double what we have downtown and be happy. Most just seem to cater to the Exchange Place lunch crowd anyway.

They finally came out of the closet? Good for them.

Uncle Joe's (RIP) was a huge gay bar before being reborn as a rock venue. Not sure if they changed due to financial challenges or just a change of heart, but that space was huge.

You're too funny. No carcinogens with your grilled meat and toasted breads. I don't even know where to start. May I suggest never, ever entering a restaurant kitchen. Or never reading any of that crazy biology stuff. Ignorance in bliss.

You want a soda with that?

Exactly right. They equate back to ye olde days when people would write checks at the supermarket and it took 5 minutes. It's legal tender and it's fast.

And no, I could give a damn about the merchant fees. Does the store care about charging me $3 for cash at their ATM?

Prosecutor: NJ Waiter Stole Credit Data from 100 Customers

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- Authorities in northern New Jersey say a waiter using an electronic "skimmer'' device stole credit card information from at least 100 customers of restaurants in Jersey City and Newark and passed it to an identity theft ring.

Prosecutors say the ring used the data to make thousands of dollars of fraudulent purchases.

Hudson County First Assistant Prosecutor Guy Gregory said Friday that three people have been arrested so far and a fourth is being sought.

Investigators say the waiter stole credit card information by swiping the cards through an electronic device that records information on a credit card's magnetic strip.

Gregory would not name the waiter or the restaurants involved and it was not known if the waiter was among those arrested.

Long Slip pedestrian bridge from Jersey City to Hoboken to open in September
by Carly Baldwin/The Jersey Journal
Wednesday August 26, 2009, 4:20 PM
Carly Baldwin/The Jersey JournalThe completed Long Slip pedestrian walkway connects the Newport section of Jersey City and downtown Hoboken.

The long-awaited Long Slip pedestrian walkway is complete and ready for use, except for one problem: It's not open to the public yet.

The walkway will open sometime in September, but officials from NJ Transit, which constructed the bridge, declined to give an exact date.

"I don't know why it's not open yet," said Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who deferred all other questions to NJ Transit.

Construction on the walkway began in 2007 and the walkway was anticipated to open in spring of this year.

The 175-foot-long, 30-foot-wide bridge spans the Long Slip Canal. The walkway connects the downtown section of Hoboken to the Newport area of Jersey City, built up by mega developer LeFrak. The walkway connects Newport residents to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail station, the PATH, buses and the New York Waterways ferries at Hoboken Terminal.

The bridge costs $6.4 million, much of it in federal funds, to build. West Cranford-engineering firm Simpson & Brown, Inc. was awarded the contract to build the walkway in 2007.

"We've been getting emails asking when is this thing finally going to open," said Hoboken resident Helen Manogue. Manogue is the president of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway Conservancy, a group which pushes for the completion of a public Hudson River promenade.

According to a state-mandate, the walkway is one day meant to stretch, unbroken, from Bayonne to Fort Lee. Per state law, when a developer builds on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, they are required to construct a portion of the walkway.

"Our objective is to see that the so-called 'gaps' in the walkway are filled," said Manogue. "It's supposed to be an 18.5 linear mile stretch running along the waterfront. It's taken 21 years and we still don't have it completed."

Once fully completed, the walkway will be a continuous system of parks, piers and open space along the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay waterfront, extending from the George Washington Bridge to the Bayonne Bridge.

I do find it funny though that they refuse to pay 1.9% to Visa but have no problem passing on a 17% APR card to the consumer. Socialists!

I don't know about the Costco issued cards, but AmEx is different in that you are not supposed to carry a month to month balance. It's a minor difference of credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) versus charge cards (AmEx, Diner's Club).

They do offer credit cards though, formerly Optima and these days, Blue. If the Costco card offers an interest baring carryover, it probably a Blue-like card.

Re: VERIZON FIOS

Apples and elephants as far as the SMS charges are concerned.

FIOS entering the market has brought broadband prices down in our area. It has also forced Comcast to upgrade broadband and DOCSIS. Your non-competition argument is bunk. You just have a bone to pick.

I'm confused.

Comcast has had a monopoly for decades and you yell at Verizon for introducing competition? You use bittorrent and don't think that downloads are relevant? FIOS massively increased the upstream over Comcast and your not happy with that either?

And the competition has totally brought prices down.

So, wha?!

Heard some breaks skid there around this time, but didn't see anything. Sorry.

Is the victim ok?

This intersection is terrible for some reason. Some guy with two dogs almost got hit yesterday and the driver got out to yell at the pedestrian. This and other incidents happen here all the time. Ridiculous.

As for the "you FAG" comment, I guess it's no more or less malicious then calling someone "fugly", "pathetic" or a "know nothing".

Trust me, when I make argument I do not resort to name calling. There are better ways to make a statement that will push buttons just as effectively.

Just wow. There's so much you just don't get. You seriously need to get over yourself.

We do run the gamut here, so it's not like we're missed a price point.

From top to bottom:

Morton Williams
A&P
Shoprite
Pathmark
C-Town

Some might switch Shoprite and Pathmark, but I never go to one so I don't know. The problem is that unless you live in Newport, all the non-ghetto ones aren't easily walkable.

It is a cooperative of different owners who operate the stores freely of each other. Very much like a franchise. Even Inserra operates nicer stores out in the burbs and if you saw the quality go up, I'm sure they would raise prices too.

Knowing a little bit about Inserra Supermarkets (the owner of our Shoprite), they don't consider all stores created equal. Fact is that they treat this one as a ghetto store and as long as they staff it accordingly, this will never change.

Oh, you're just being priced out Christine! Kidding aside, I think even Frank Bruni would agree that the quality does not match the prices at this place. I'll certainly be going back for the bar, but the menu needs adjusting. Kobe burger? That's more about pretense than taste.

That said, the owners are great people and I'm sure they'll respond to their customers.
