Does anyone know where to go to drop off the garbage? I'm going away for a week and don't want to leave the smelly garbage.

Great idea except that legally, I don't think an election can be thrown together in less than 4 weeks.

Yeah that occurred to me earlier tonight, hard to believe Nov 3rd is so close. Well maybe there can be a special election. Board of Ed elections are in May I think.

Paid another visit last night (must be the sixth or seventh time now) and I still don't get why people hate on this place. Took some out-of-town family for a beer and to sit down and chat and it was just fine. Ample seating and space, felt welcome all around, chatted with the family and the bartenders, and had a great time. We even had two minors with us and never felt unwelcome, or stared at, or anything like that.

As for this not being a real biergarten... I don't get that either. I have been to several beer gardens in Munich and Frankfurt and they were similar in many aspects. During my visits to those places, the locals were mostly drinking beers with friends or significant others, and there was very little consuming of food, if any, except for the ubiquitious pretzels!! From my experience, people would sit outside, soak in the sun, enjoy some time with their mates, and just enjoy life. Maybe some of the ones spewing crap about this place should do the same: enjoy the moment and the beer and ignore the crap you don't like.

Of course, I haven't had to deal with any unruly crowds, or the Sandbar types, during my many visits, so maybe I am just lucky, or know how to pick my seating area...

I totally agree with you. A lot of people just don't know what they are talking about. I happen to be German and have taken my German language group there on several occasions and everyone agrees it's pretty damn close to an authentic biergarten. Yes the sausages aren't quite the same as you would find in Germany, but all of the Germans I've spoken to think the sausages a pretty good none the less. And french fries are on par with German french fries being that you can choose to eat them with mayo if you wish. If you want to go to German restaurant then go to Zum Schneider. But a biergarten of this size is not going to be able to prepare an extensive menu. And you will find a similar menu at biergartens in Germany. If you don't believe me then check out the menu on this website from a biergarten in Berlin which is similar in size of Zepplin Hall (click on Beergarden to see the outdoor menu):

I think it's an interesting social piece. I have quite a few visa holding coworkers and friends in similar situations and even know a stay at home husband in this situation. Some of the spouses don't know the language well and that is an additional barrier to making friends and fitting in here. Some have chosen to have children since they can't work anyway. Others jump passionately into hobbies. And some have returned to their home countries choosing to live apart from their husbands for awhile in order to pursue their careers. Thanks for posting.

Did you try calling kitchen aid directly? My mixer broke about a year after I bought it. I think it was my fault because the gear stop turning after the dough hook got jammed on a chunck of hardened brown sugar. I called them up. They sent me a new one no questions asked and a shipping label for the old one. It is a $300 item, so they really stand behind their products and were very apologetic about the old one breaking.

I'm not sure what your point is Mary. I'm glad to see these reports lately. It seems like the JC police are stepping it up a bit and trying to be proactive. All the guy had to do was stop and show the cop he didn't have a weapon and he would have been able to leave and go about his business without a problem. Instead he told the cops to f*** off provoking them to come after him. The bicyclist brought it on himself.

You can't have it both ways: either the cops crack down on people or they hang back and wait for something bad to happen. Slightly off topic but related: you know there is a national search for terrorism suspect Najibullah Zazi accomplices? How can the police and law enforcement find people like that if they don't ask questions when someone looks suspicious?

Check this out:

213 Newark Avenue Named "The Saffron"

"The Field's Development project on Newark Avenue just west of Jersey Avenue is set to auction several units, according to the NY Times..."

According to the NY Times:
"For the 53 two-bedroom and 2 three-bedroom units at the Saffron, prices will be set in the high $400,000s to low $500,000s."

It's called Planned Obsolescence and it permeates everything from consumer products to public transportation. 50 years ago stuff was built to last, now you can figure on a 10 year life span at the most at the taxpayer and consumer's expense.

For example, how much you want to bet that roads will have to be repaved again in 10 years. If you've ever driven on a highway in Germany you would see no pot holes, no cracks, rarely. The reason why is they use better and more durable contrustruction materials. Failure is built into the system here in the US because the contractors get big bucks from the state to repair and replace. And the money flow from planned obsolescence keeps our good old economy afloat. The Story of Stuff

Germany certainly does have excellent roadways, but their construction and maintenance costs money. Where do you think it comes from? The fruits of their impressive taxation policies and fuel prices seem obvious. Also, are you sure they use better materials? Higher traffic volume, greater vehicle weight, and a more severe climate all contribute to accelerated wear of roadways in the northeastern United States relative to Germany.

Nope German roadways are specifically designed to last longer and the weather conditions just as harsh as the northeast with snowy mountainous regions in the south and low lying shorelines in the north. Yes it does come at price but it's done right the first time and cost the same over the long term.

My point is, if you want something built correctly the first time go to the experts. Another example: levee construction in the US is completely inferior compared to Europe. The Dutch are far superior at constructing dykes and they are built to hold.

Back to the PATH trains:
My beef is on several occasions, not just one, I've encountered a new train with a/c failure. The conductor confirmed it was broken and apologized, so it's not a failure of how to operate the equipment. I think it's unacceptable. If I'm spending a $1Mil on a piece of equipment I expect it to work. An A/C problem is a pretty minor issue, but I think it foreshadows problems to come down the line. If that is failing already, what else is going to fail on these trains in the future? A failure on these trains can cost lives. Look what happened in DC earlier this year. Equipment failures should be taken seriously no matter how minor.

Yeah I was in one of the new cars last week. The ride is much smoother however the AC was already broken int he car I was in - on a brand new train car! That is just unacceptable.

We ended up taking the WTC and then the subway to 14th because we didn't want to take a chance of being late. we left at 6:12pm and arrived at the Union sq station at 6:45 via 6 train. I think it was the better choice.
We took 33rd street train home with no problems or detours. strange.

I went to school with a girl who claimed to have been in the show, I don't know if she lied and I never saw the documentary. She was a little brat and thought the world revolved around her. She ended up being one of those high school cheerleader, popular girl types. Not a very nice person, but maybe she's changed since then. I saw her at a bar several years after high school. She was really drunk and I had the feeling as if she was an alcholic, so felt sorry for her.

Let's all try to be a bit more respectful. These guys put their lives on the line. Perhaps they could use more training, but perhaps they are also constrained by resources and city politics. There are several police officers I've spoken to on the detective level and above who have been more than professional, so imho it's not fair to lump them all into one broad category. But hey opinions are like assholes everybody's got one.

Re: Morton Williams Grocery

Everyone who has been begging for Whole Foods or Garden of Eden type grocery store, you should really check this place out.
Morton Williams rocks!!!!!! They have a really good ethnic foods section. My Korean neighbor claims they have all the specialty Korean stuff. The european food section is the best I?ve seen in the area. I?ve sent my Swedish friends there for ingredients. And I?ve found a lot of German yummies there to supplement my Grandmas recipes. Viennese coffee varieties like you?ve never seen. If you like gummy bears, you should try Katjes which they have there in tropical fruits, gummy euro coins and sour currants (called Saure Johannesb?ren). The French section has a lot of stuff too.
And I was making sushi at a home a few weeks ago and they have all the ingredients. Everything is super fresh, a little pricey but slightly less than whole foods. Excellent quality.

Oh and someone on JC List mentioned in another thread to make sure you feed the meter so you don't get towed or you can park in the garage for free if you spend more than $10 (parking stub validated at the registers).
