i just wanna say i love all this bike talk.

it's just great to hear people thinking of alternatives with transportation. most young people who live in a city don't even need a car, assuming you don't have to cart kids around.

i love the youthful attitude! keep it up, JC.

oh, and the foldable Cannondale, haha, that thing is great. what a good idea. I own a Cannondale mountain bike myself, Lefty fork, hardtail, ELO, frame is amazingly responsive, ultra-light weight. oh, and it's in this ridiculous booger green color!

keep pedaling, JC.

not sure what i think about this "apology".

if countries/empires/world powers had to apologize for their past attrocities while persuing economic power, basically every country in the world would be issuing one.

of course, agreed, slavery was an abomination, but it sticks in our minds because it was relatively recent when considering the overall history of mankind.

man is no more "civilized" than he was thousands of years ago.

ya know, it's amazing how many people are on the juice these days. honestly, every time I see some guy in public with huge muscles, veins popping out everywhere, I always think to myself there's a great chance he didn't get like that naturally. it's just so common.

what is a bit surprising to me though is 40! officers. that's a lot of people unconcerned with their health. and like previously stated, their balls.

if even half of those officers under suspicion are proved to be on the juice, that's a huge amount, and it would be a terrible shame as well.

Mein Kampf.

In this day and age, it's a book many people can learn from. It also teaches you to never look at any one person in one single way, and exposes the various connections you or other people have to one another.

In the end, Mein Kampf expresses ideas and ways of thinking not new to this world, but emphasizes how something small can become something so big if done a certain way.

Long book, his thoughts are absolutely all over the place and lack in many cases any scientific reasoning or even rationality, routinely exposing a classic megalomaniac, but nonetheless, because of who he was when he wrote it, and who he became thereafter......you can't help but be intrigued by this read.

Re: Savas - Polish Cafeteria Opens on Grove Street

bolew,

very funny post, I was laughing reading that because it is right on point with what people can usually expect from Polish people.

In their defense:

I won't say that they are not people that "show preference". I cannot, they are just as "racist" as many other ethnicities, for a lack of a better term. BUT, I think with Polish people, you need to take comments like that really with a grain of salt.

they have a very unique and warm culture, and they really appreciate meeting and talking to their own kind because of it. a true Pole, from Poland, grew up in a country of white people. 98% of their country is Polish, it's a completely homogenous society, and it is surrounded by oppressive countries (historically speaking) so they learned to protect and appreciate their own kind, because every other country insisted through the years on trampelling them.

meeting other Poles makes them feel safe, at home. In Poland they have a saying which translates to "Guest in the house, God in the house," and believe me, you feel it when you are in their houses. Polish culture is all about family, health, and safety.

with that said, I still don't excuse their occasional ignorance, but that's with any culture. sorry you had to experience that, it isn't right, but try to let it slide.

Home away from home
Home away from home

nugnfutz,

i would agree with you that a telephone survey is nothing short of bogus. if that is where these statistics originated from, then the accuracy is very questionable....BUT:

lets say they are really really really inaccurate. like 50%. meaning, 50% of the reported bites that were reported through this survey simply never happened, or the formula used to put together a country wide figure was inappropriate. is over 2 million bites per year an acceptable number for you? does that not show a serious problem with having dogs roaming around in public?

4.7 million adjusted to 50% error would be 2.35 million bites per year. with 300 million people living in America, that would mean that would be about 2 out of every 300 people get bit, or 1 out of every 150. to me, this number is unacceptable. even if that survey in the end resulted in a 75% error, the numbers are still staggering.

now, i ask myself, how accurate, if AT ALL, are these new, extrapolated statistics, and my first instinct tells me they're a little far fetched, i can only think of a few instances growing up where a friend or classmate was bitten badly by a dog, but who knows?

brian_em,

i'm not going to give you a ton of crap, after all, it's independent, out of the box thinkers that this country desperately needs and lacks, but i'm not going to sit on my hands about it either. i think what needs to be added is that, yes, GWB is a horrible president, but in order for him to pull off everything he has done wrong, he must have many many accomplices. this isn't a monarchy, you can't just point your finger as the king of a country and say, "my country is doing THIS tomorrow." there's alot of bad eggs in the US government.

"But when there is a threat to our country, we need to show our teeth."

and what threat is that?

"I think the way we are dealing with Iran is more than fair."

ok. now i'm curious.....why should we have gone into Iraq, if according to you, it wasn't a total mistake?

linky,

in all honesty, at the risk of sounding like a $hit, i would have a problem helping out 99% of those people. i see how most of them live, and i have little sympathy for the consequences that they are currently dealing with.

another thing now that you mentioned your house and your struggle with buying it......i'm simply amazed at how fast people insist on buying a house, and this stigma that goes along with renting.

people immediately frown on renting. everyone always told me, "well, if you can afford it, you should buy something as soon as you can, right now you're just collecting rent receipts, wasting money."

if i only had a nickel..................

this way of thinking follows suit perfectly with American mentalities. they never look at the consequences long term.

if you buy a house in a nice neighborhood in Suburbia, NJ, a half acre of land, considering the state avg. property tax is $6,000, i would say you're looking at around $8,000 per year (my folks pay over $10,000 in Morris County). divide that buy twelve......about $670 per month! for another $400 in most suburban towns in NJ, you can get a small 1 bedroom apt.......with no interest costs, maintenance, landscaping, bla bla bla bla bla, and if your company moves, so can you!

if your mortgage/property taxes would end up being another...i don't know.......another $1,500 (i would say this is conservative, considering most people have very little money to put down initially)......think of how many other ways you could be investing it, rather than pi$$ing it away to some lender.

don't get me wrong, people make money on real estate, that goes without saying, but when i look at the amount of money my parents have spent on their house over the past 35 years, and the amount of money they could get for it now..........what they gained was a nice house in the woods, privacy, luxury, freedom, a big backyard for their kids to play in......but what they have lost......a few million dollars.

everyone's in a rush, everyone's following the status quo, everyone's gotta keep up with the Jones', and it's a shame. a bunch of money spending robots.

linky, the part about the soup and Shoprite.....priceless.

you go girl!

this is slightly off topic, but it's in response to brewster's last post. he/she brings up some good points about this country:

brewster wrote:

"They sold the future of their country to get from rich to filthy rich hereditary oligarchs, while the rest of the country sold their own futures to party like rock stars on borrowed money because their leaders told them they deserved to have a good time."

i don't like GWB anymore than you do brewster, and in the end, it is the people's decision what they spend their money on, and this is something many Americans simply cannot realize about their country and about themselves. these big companies are making zillions of dollars because.....the middle/middle upper class cannot stop buying CRAP (like 60" LCD screens).

American "culture" is so amazingly consumer-based, it's part of Americans' lifestyles....they want everything, and don't like to wait for it.....it is like that now, and it was like that as far back as when GWB was getting drunk at his secret college fraternity parties..........long before he took office.

you don't want a huge mortgage? don't buy a 5 bedroom, 3500 sq. ft. house with huge property taxes, maintenance costs, heating/electric, landscaping, etc. (when you have 1 child, to boot!).

you don't want a big car payment? don't by an Escalade because your son decided he wants to play soccer and now you need to justify that "we need a bigger vehicle". (oh yeah, and then after 18 months when you get bored with it and decide to "just trade it in" so that you can get the next bigger and better model)

the list goes on and on. people in America are clueless about the value of the dollar (which is quickly declining quite literally) and until they realize it, the rich will continue to bank on their consumerism mentalities.

for those of you who do not live like this, and i'm sure there are plenty on this forum, i applaud you, and i don't mean to offend those of you with big huge vehicles and big huge houses, but the facts are there about American spending and where that money finally ends up.

the $60,000 salary always wants to live a $70,000 salary.

change your lifestyle, and you change your life.

i don't know if i would consider your landlord "blackmailing" you for money that she most likely deserves.

are you new to NJ/US? this is a pretty common thing, 1 month in advance. if you didn't know the law, you should have looked into it, especially if it is absolutely necessary that you leave on this date, Jan. 15th.

whether you can dig up some kind of law saying, according to the particular kind of lease you have, that the law is not valid here, or that it IS valid, it still was a pretty gutsy thing not checking this with your landlord before you decided to bail, especially considering your security deposit!

for all you Obama, "gotta get out of work early to see him" supporters, no offense, but honestly, i don't know how anyone can be that passionate about a politician.

whatever the case may be, whatever kind of man he is, you can be sure alot of it is bull$hit to get himself elected. that's what EVERYONE says when they're passionate about a candidate. then they spend the rest of the person's term complaining about how they lied and that they are doing a crappy job.

I know there may have been some presidents in the past, senators, mayors, whatever, that did what you may consider to be a great job, but seriously, why is Obama a sure thing to some of you people? have you sat down with him and spoken with him, in private, or have seen him in candid situations, where you can get a true gauge on his character? you see him on TV, on those B.S. debates, read what someone decided to write about him in a newspaper........he gives these public speeches TO GAIN VOTES. that's priority one.

for all you Obama supporters, I hope you're right. i hope he's worth taking an afternoon off of work to go see because he's really going to change things around in this country, but I guess I just can't understand where you get the motivation or what gets you so convinced, considering the fact that there are many intelligent people on this forum who know exactly how and what politicians do....even your precious Obama.

it's not a perfect movie by any means.....but one thing that is inarguable is the FACT, not theory, but FACT, that jet fuel is incapable of burning at a hot enough temperature to melt those steel beams.

with that said, how the hell did the buildings fall at basically the speed of gravity? like a perfect demolition job?

what about the thermalite deposits?

what about the picture of the beam with a perfect 45 degree angle cut into it?

how about no traces of an airplane at the pentagon, or the one that crashed in the woods?

how about the refusal by the Fed's to release the camera footage that displayed exactly what crashed into the Pentagon?

how about building 7, collapsing to the ground like a perfect demo job, and it wasn't even hit?????

conspiracy theory or not, these FACTS just don't add up.

because of that, i don't think it's justified to jump on freedom's back about this movie or his posts.

and the fact that there are those of you that lost friends/family, it's irrelevant to this discussion. you think questioning the US government and their intentions is offensive?

what do you think about the Iraq war? you agree with that? what's that.......?........ was that a "no" i heard? because I have already lost a close friend to that war, and i'll be the first person to say that the war in Iraq is a totally bull$hit war the US government never should have started.

does THAT offend you?

sorry, but what a ridiculous statement.

i just checked the facts, and you couldn't be more incorrect.

there were, in 2006, 4269 cases of West Nile Virus in the USA last year.

now go to this website:

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html

better yet, don't bother, i'll give you a quick summary:

there are, on avg., just under 5 MILLION dog bites, per year, in the United States.

800,000 of which require medical attention, 368,000 of them need to be sent to emergency medical depts.

1,000 PER DAY are treated in Emergency Medical Rooms.

Quote: "Most of the victims who receive medical attention are children, half of whom are bitten in the face."

lovely.

the most common age for people being bit by dogs is 5 to 9 years old, and the numbers go down as the ages go up. on avg., only 26 attacks are fatal every year, but there sure are a hell of alot of young children walking around with scars on their faces or something worse, not to mention traumatized.

hell, google this kind of thing, there are lawyers all over the United States that specialize in dog bite cases. they make a living off of these repeating occurences.
