A law like this is only fair if it is enforced across the board. Otherwise, it is an invitation for the police to harass young people who "look suspicious."

Undeveloped land close to PATH stations has got to be valuable enough to develop without public assistance. The problem is that abatements are given so routinely that developers have come to expect them. That can change.

Asking senior city employees for contributions is inappropriate. Asking blue-collar city workers is sleazy.

I wish I could say I am shocked by such a blatant disregard for the law, but it is the kind of behavior I've learned to expect from our mayor.

It seems Healy cannot finance his campaign by asking ordinary citizens for support. Instead, he must extort contributions from city employees and accept under the table contributions from people who stand to profit if he is re-elected.

I really hope we can put the days of machine politics behind us. It's embarrassing.

Sorry to get sarcastic here, but you have to wonder sometimes if JC is being sold off for a bunch of beads.

One World Trade Center will be some of the most expensive office space in the world. I don't think too many JC-based offices will be looking to move to such a building.

If Fulop is elected mayor and Candice wins Ward E, we know she will have a major voice in setting policy and the ability to protect the interests of Ward E.

It seems to me, no matter which candidate wins the mayor's race, Dan would be isolated and ineffective.

I am a "regular" Jersey City resident. I've been here ten years and intend to stay. I am not less entitled to a voice in civic affairs than someone who has been here longer. And my interests are aligned with those of all parts of JC. The false idea that the wards are somehow at war reflects a desperate Healy campaign, not reality.

I think you are mistaken when you say that Fulop supporters don't know how the city really runs. We listened to the Dwek tapes. We've seen unqualified candidates appointed to jobs because they are loyal to the machine. We've heard how long people have to wait for approvals to open a new business.

Besides, you miss the point. We are out to change how Jersey City runs. It is not only DTers who understand change is needed. There are plenty of what you would call "regular" residents who are thrilled that someone finally has the determination and support to sweep away old-style crony government.

This is a pathetic ploy. Steve is a Democrat. We can argue over policy choices. We can argue over the significance of candidates' pasts. But we cannot argue over this. Calling Steve a Republican is a naked lie. Think about what kind of candidate would pin his electoral hopes on a brazen lie.

Seems like you understand the thought process fine. All the good intentions in the world amount to nothing if you can't get elected. Politics is a game of coalitions. It is perfectly reasonable to select running mates because they can help you get elected.

Let's remember what's at stake here. The primary responsibilities of a member of the council are to make sure the needs of the communities they represent are met, and to advise the mayor. Members of the mayor's ticket also are expected to endorse and protect the mayor's initiatives. Steve's choices are able to perform those responsibilities very well, regardless of past affiliations.

The real power lies in the mayoralty.

Dan is working to put that power in the hands of a man with a history of corruption and a lack of energy and new ideas. If he succeeds, Dan will have no power. Healy will lumber on. Things will continue as they are. Reform will be blocked.

I'd be happy to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks if I could see them. But the Parking Authority doesn't seem to enforce the rule against parking too close to an intersection, so I can't really see a pedestrian who hasn't already started to cross. I try in good faith not to hit one. So far, so good.

No need to tear it down. It's curtain wall construction. They just need to "reface" it by replacing the curtain walls.

Dan--Could you explain to me exactly what is so wrong with the council's expansion of P2P that Healy was justified in vetoing it? I've only read about unspecified "legal problems."

To me it looks like he vetoed the ordinance simply to deny Fulop an accomplishment, just as the Republicans in Congress blocked even their own ideas as soon as Obama adopted them.

This doesn't seem to be "low-income housing" in the sense of public housing if the residents will be homeowners earning up to $80,000. I guess the reference to $950 per month is to mortgage and taxes? What prices are these going for? It is a rough neighborhood, but change has to start somewhere.

Edit: The website says prices start at "low $120,000"
