Re: UBER - car service in Jersey City

Home away from home

It's the same scenario we see over and over, the old guard trying to protect their vested interests through the courts and other legal means instead of getting more competitive. Eventually, the consumer will prevail. Sometimes capitalism works despite the interests of the vested minority.

The companies in JC should be embarrassed by their overall service and sky high prices, but they had no incentive to improve until now. And now that the incentive is here, all they can do is fight change, well, Hoboken that is.

The part I don't understand is that Zimmer is an ardent supporter of Lyft and Uber yet it seems like it's a war there.

I'm looking for a recommendation for an independent pharmacy in the Lafayette area that offers good customer service, etc. They should be in the vicinity of the Foundry (1 mile) and deliver. Thanks.

I didn't get a vote by mail ballot like I'm supposed to. Instead, I rec'd the usual notice listing instructions and the candidate. So, I went to the voting booth this morning and they wouldn't let me use a booth since it said "Mail" next to my name in the book. I had to fill out a generic mail in ballot there. Nincompoops.

I love Uber to pieces. But I've had mixed results going from Manhattan to JC. Does Lyft go to JC from Manhattan? I just joined Lyft but can't figure out if they do that. I'll be needing a ride tomorrow from Manhattan, probably around PM rush hour unfortunately. Does it make a difference which service I use?

The exact opposite is true. The unionized restaurants are mostly hotel restaurants and they're not all unionized.

The link about NY wages is definitely wrong. $2.13 is the federal minimum. I'm not sure if that's still the case. However, NYS has a higher minimum; it presently has a $5 minimum as of Jan. 2013. That takes precedence over the federal minimum... it would be the higher one. At the time of the article, it was $4.65 or thereabouts. I do payroll for the restaurant, among a few bazillion other things.

I question how scientific such a study is. But in general, it seems to coincide with my experience working in the industry for 20+ years, though not in the front of house.

I was a bit surprised to find that Jews fall below average. I happen to be Jewish, but that's irrelevant. I'm guessing that the elderly Jewish diners brought down the average significantly.

While I believe the study to be mostly valid, it's a shame that servers often generalize and let these statistics affect their service. But it's hard to blame them.

I presently work in a restaurant which is inundated with tourists. Of all the groups mentioned, foreigners are by far the worst tippers. I see it with my own eyes. It's not a lack of knowledge about our custom, stoopid as it may be. They're set in the ways. And tipping is very much a practice in Europe. However, it's generally 10%. However, and this is a big HOWEVER, European servers make a higher wage and receive benefits unlike in the US. As a result, prices are higher. In the end, it comes out to the same thing.

Restaurant tipping has been a source of controversy and debate for a long time. I don't know anyone who doesn't think it's gotten out of hand and that we should once and for all get rid of it. But there's no easy way to get rid of an ingrained custom. There are some bigger restaurants that have been able to eliminate tipping and raise prices. It really hasn't caught on as the owners hoped it would. The smaller restaurants in general, isn't going to do this. A potential customer might not connect the dots when he sees the higher prices even though tipping may not be allowed.

As far as not tipping at all, personally, I think I've only done it once. Servers in NY and I think NJ make $5/hr. They have to do something pretty egregious to warrant a lousy tip from me. Then again, I tip well above the average only because I'm in the business. Also, you need to remember that the server does not keep the entire tip. He has to pay a portion to bussers, runners and bartenders and possibly the maitre d'. So, when you leave a lousy tip, you're hurting more than the server.

Re: BIKE LANES in Jersey City

Home away from home

Who has the right of way when there is a car parked in a bike lane, the cyclist or vehicles? I have a problem mostly on Grove St. where the original lanes are during rush hour. There's always parked cars in the bike lane and I go around when an opening arises. Once in a while a driver seems to vehemently object to this and honks or worse.

Unless this new law is codified as a primary law and offense, and officers are instructed to enforce it aggressively, I do not expect ANY improvements. While riding eastbound on Grand St, I have had cars pull up within a foot and honk their horns at me, as well as passed with mere inches to spare. The drivers are very, very aggressive here. I would love to see one of those asswipes pulled over by a cop. Fat chance of that happening, though.

But (and, as a segue into the sidewalk thread) I continue riding on the streets, because that's where I (legally) belong and in the (possibly naive) belief that drivers will only learn to share the road and look out for cyclists if they are forced to do so.

I think we're gonna have this argument forever. I've had the same thing happen to me on Grand as well as the 2 blocks on Pacific before Grand. I ride the sidewalk on those 2 blocks on Pacific as well as on Grand up to Monmouth where I turn. There's a reason the bike lane ends on Pacific 2 blocks before it meets Grand. That's because there simply isn't room with the present layout for drivers and bikes (during rush hour). I have no desire to sacrifice my life for "the cause." If there are people on the walk and it is unsafe (for pedestrians), I walk my bike. If there's no one or hardly anyone on the walk, which is usually the case, I ride very slowly. Common sense has to come into play. This is the only area I find it necessary to get off the street for fear of of maniacal drivers.

As for bikers going the wrong way with or without bike lanes, I find it amazing and don't understand it. I've come across this on Grove several times where the original bike lanes are.

No blame intended. On the contrary, I feel sorry for the operators. I'm just trying to understand what's going on. Cesar has been made out to be an ogre and that may very well be true. But his actions run contrary to common sense, or making money. We've not heard his side, or at least I haven't. I wonder what his thinking is or if there is any sort of realistic plan except to be an egomaniac and run someone else's restaurant.

Ironically, I know someone who was in an almost identical situation.

I'm curious about what is going on there living almost across the street and having seen many of the incarnations and have heard about past ones.

Does the leasor, or lessee if you will, sign a lease that permits Cesar to maintain some semblance of control? If so, that would be foolish. I assume this is the case otherwise the lessees would sue Cesar. Then again, maybe they are.

I just wonder how an operator gets into this situation?

Times have changed. Growing up in the city in the prehistoric era, my friends and I played touch football in the street. Freddy threw one long and it smashed someone's side view mirror. We knew whose car it was. We all went to the owner's apartment, apologized, and offered to pay.

Just to clarify on the parking at The Foundry and the LSP Park & Ride lot: as Monroe points out, the owners get a dedicated spot. As for renters, they get a free spot, but not a dedicated (i.e., numbered) spot. I don't know of any renters paying to park on the lot, but maybe they are now charging newer arrivals, since parking is probably maxed out.

Not to quibble, but nothing is free. I am a renter and $90 was built into the monthly payment. That was 3+ years ago so it may be more now.

Besides, why worry about parking?? The sidewalk on Monitor Street has plenty of free spots, haha.

The rates are almost the same with about a 25% tip in JC as regular cabs. This is based on countless rides from the grove street path with the white cabs vs a few rides with uber. Even if uber was a little more, it would be well worth it.

I vowed to say no more on this since the same things have been said over and over for months. Say it once, why say it again? But I can't resist thinking how crazy people are here. Now the above general statement is being made that "the cyclists attitude on the streets and sidewalks is confirmed here."

First, I beg to differ. There's been inane statements made in this thread on both sides but frankly, I can only recall one pro bike user being a jerk judging from the things he said, i.e., running over pedestrians intentionally. It seems many bike riders offered compelling arguments why it's necessary to ride on the sidewalk sometimes. It also seems to me that many pedestrians are stubborn and don't want to listen to anyone but themselves and people who agree with them. Anyway, JClist is fortunately not a barometer of Jersey City and this tread is laughable.

It never ceases to amaze me how dogmatic some people are. I am a biker, pedestrian and motorist. Situations vary and sometimes it's necessary to use your brain rather than some lofty principle.

Re: Abandoned bikes at the Grove St. PATH station
Home away from home
Home away from home

About 2 years ago, I emailed Councilman Fulop's office about the same problem. Someone was put on the case and vigorously pursued it. They had a tough time determining who was responsible, but I was finally told it was the Port Authority. They continued to pursue it and at about the same time, the new bike racks were put up. I have no idea if my complaint had anything to do with it. Also, many of the abandoned bikes were removed.

Within a year, the situation was the same - abandoned bikes taking up many spots. The conclusion is that there has to be a more time sensitive approach to resolving the problem.

Not to digress, I think the NO BIKE PARKING signs by the parking signs in the plaza are a joke. Where is one supposed to park? I've started parking across the street near A1 Deli at one of the parking signs. When I go to work late, around 10am, there's almost nothing available.

If I had the energy, I'd write to Fulop's office again.

Re: Fire alarm in the Foundry

Management sent a mass email stating there was an emergency and apologized.

It's nice to know there's a warning, but as far as I know, this is the first non-false alarm out of about 40 such occurrences since I've been here. There comes a time when you think every alarm is false.

It seems to me they should hire another fire company if in over 3 years, the current one can't fix the problem. When I mentioned this to the manager a year ago, all I got was a shrug. It's just indicative of their attitude towards renters.
