Jersey City Downtown Ward E population skyrockets, causing huge imbalance with other wards

Population imbalance in Jersey City could force new elections in 2022

By David Wildstein, August 13 2021 9:22 pm

Jersey City will elect six ward councilmembers in November, but not necessarily to four-year terms.

The city’s population jumped by 18% over the last decade, from 247,597 to 292,449, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released on Thursday.

But the number of people who live in Jersey’s City’s Downtown Ward E, where much of the residential housing development has occurred, shot up by 59.5% since 2010. Ward E’s population, 69,320, accounts most of the city’s population increase.

Man accused of Jersey City homicide had been freed by court after February drug-dealing charges

The man accused of gunning down a mother of four near a Jersey City sidewalk vigil last month had been released from custody after he was charged with drug-dealing in the same neighborhood in February.

Mark Stewart, who Wednesday was ordered detained through his trial for aggravated manslaughter in the death of 30-year-old Felicia Stewart just before 1 a.m. July 27, was released on “Level 3 monitoring” in that case as part of the state’s criminal justice reform that did away with cash bail.

Jersey City Council discusses establishing Cannabis Control Board during caucus meeting

By Daniel Ulloa/Hudson County View

First Assistant Corporation Counsel Nick Strasser explained the ordinance establishes a three-person CCB, all appointed by the mayor, that will serve staggered three-year terms.

He said it would be comparable to the ABC board, which regulates liquor licenses. Those who wish to operate in JC will likely be in touch with Jersey City Supervising Planner Matthew Ward and other city officials as the process continues, Strasser noted.

Outdoor beer garden Smorgasbar is now open on the Jersey City waterfront

Posted Today, July 15, 2021 By

A massive new beer garden is now open along the Jersey City waterfront. Earlier this summer, open-air market Smorgasburg opened its first-ever New Jersey location at the Harborside campus. This month, the founders of the popular food market opened “Smorgasbar,” a 300-seat outdoor venue with incredible Hudson River and Manhattan skyline views.

Located at 3 Second Street, Smorgasbar replaces the popular, but now-shuttered, Lutze Biergarten. The watering hole features more than a dozen beers on a tap, frozen drinks, and a full bar.

Food options include barbecue tacos from Carlitos, outdoor wood-fired pizza from San Giuseppe Pizza, and Oyster Party’s raw bar and lobster pop-ups on the weekend.

Jersey City considers gender-neutral bathrooms

Law would require single-stall bathrooms to be available to all

On June 30, the Jersey City Council will consider the final adoption of an ordinance that would make single-stall bathrooms gender-neutral.

The law would require existing businesses with single-user bathrooms to change the signage on their bathroom doors to reflect that they are gender neutral. If adopted, businesses would have 60 days from the time the ordinance goes into effect to comply.

Cunningham DUI summons not affecting majority leader contest, Sweeney says

By Nikita Biryukov, June 03 2021 7:34 pm

State Sen. Sandra Cunningham’s (D-Jersey City) summons for driving under the influence isn’t impacting her prospects of succeeding Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck) as Senate majority leader, Senate President Steve Sweeney said Thursday.

“She takes on the issues that aren’t sexy. She takes on the tough ones, so I’m standing with her,” he said during a press gaggle following the day’s voting session. “She’ll have a day in court, but I believe in her.”

Cunningham was involved in a collision that saw her vehicle strike three parked cars in Jersey City in March. She’s been charged with driving under the influence and entered a not-guilty plea Thursday morning.

Officials break ground on The View at Lincoln Park

County-owned dining and catering facility replaces Casino in the Park

Construction on The View at Lincoln Park will begin this month after Hudson County officials broke ground on the multi-million-dollar project this week.

The new dining and catering facility, on the southeastern side of Lincoln  Park, replaces the former Casino in the Park which opened in 1950 and closed in 2017.

Envisioned and used as a clubhouse for the tennis courts, and then a summer museum, the Casino in the Park has been used for thousands of political events and wedding celebrations.

In 1963, Frank Sinatra attended his parents’ 50th wedding anniversary celebration at Casino in the Park. In 1991, the Hudson County Democratic Organization hosted then Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton.

The new three-story event space will feature two banquet halls, a rooftop dining area, and a moderately priced public restaurant, according to the county.

This marks the first location for the market outside of New York and L.A.

By Rachel Chang
May 12, 2021

Smorgasburg, the country's biggest weekly open-air food market, started in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood in 2011, and now, it's celebrating its 10th anniversary in a big way — by heading across the Hudson River to Jersey City.

The popular foodie destination will make its New Jersey debut on Saturday, May 29, at 195 Hudson Street in a space that's currently a 40,000-square-foot parking lot owned by Mack-Cali, just a block from the waterfront with sprawling views of downtown Manhattan. The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Saturday through at least October.

Jersey City reimbursed two city council members for thousands of dollars in tuition for higher education courses, drawing criticism from a local good government group who say the expenses were an improper use of public money to further elected officials’ private careers.

Jersey City Council President Joyce Watterman and Ward B Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey together received a total of $8,924 in publicly funded reimbursement for classes they attended, according to documents obtained by local government accountability group Civic JC through an open public records request.

Jersey City to Invest $21M with Major Energy Infrastructure Improvements, Solidifying Jersey City’s Position as a Regional Sustainability & Resiliency Leader

Jersey City to Invest $21M with Major Energy Infrastructure Improvements, Solidifying Jersey City’s Position as a Regional Sustainability & Resiliency Leader

Plans to Improve Community’s Overall Health; Construction of 1st Microgrid to Ensure Continuity of Critical Operations During any Emergencies

JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop announced today a new partnership with Schneider Electric to implement Jersey City’s first Energy Savings Improvement Program (ESIP) to reduce operational costs, improve energy resiliency, and leverage energy savings to minimize cost on urgent capital infrastructure projects. The resolutions will go before the City Council on March 23rd to move forward on this revolutionary program which will achieve ambitious sustainability goals by maximizing funding from outside sources, such as utility rebates and incentives.  The plan saves taxpayers $21 million in energy and operational costs over 20 years while funding over $19 million in urgent capital needs.

Under the ESIP, Jersey City will also become the first in the country to create a self-sustainable municipal microgrid utilizing the 1.23 MW solar panel array installed at DPW last year to ensure continuity of vital service operations utilizing the municipal electric vehicle (EV) fleet operations, specifically EV garbage trucks. As the first on the entire East Coast to have EV garbage trucks in our municipal fleet, the microgrid takes the City’s efforts a significant step further by proactively preparing to provide power so that operations can continue through any type of power outages and emergencies with a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
