Any observations on how that affects the races or the government? Does it tend to be less "winner take all" where a Mayor tends to have a council of yes-men voted in with him? There does seem to be more combat in the Hoboken city hall, but some of that wasn't thoughtful opposition but opposition for it's own sake.

Don't really know, alas. They've only had one race in November and Zimmer and her slate did sweep, but they may have swept in May, too. Hard to tell. They have another one next week, for ward council seats.

I would like to know what the results of this have been in cities that have made the change. Because there are several that have since the NJ legislature amended the law. Has voter turnout increased? What were the savings? Have there been any reports of ballot confusion? Have candidates that were placed on the ballot below the dominant party line received a higher share of the vote (as was the case in the 2013 school board elections in Jersey City)?

The arguments by most people for or against have been reasonable points but they are being made in a vacuum. Yet we have at least a few years of experience with this in other cities.

Hoboken switched in 2013, and saw about a 30% increase in turnout in its mayor's race compared to 2009.

Their ballot wasn't really set up so that the muni candidates were underneath the major candidates, and each of the at-large council candidates received about the same share of the vote, so it doesn't look like that was an issue.

Hoboken, though, has two separate races: one year mayor and at-large council, another year ward council.

I spoke to a councilman in Byram, a small Sussex county that made the switch. He said the town did see some savings and increased voter turnout, but that the November election did seem more partisan and ugly. He was against the move. But he told me he liked not having campaign signs all over the town during the spring.

I'm also convinced that moving the election DOES NOT provide a fallback plan for our Mayor. Fulop would have to submit his petitions for the mayoral race prior to the gubernatorial primary, if that happened Sweeney and Murphy would have a field day and it could wreck Fulop's chances for the primary (while his gubernatorial run would hurt his chances in the mayoral).

No, nonpartisan municipal candidates do not have to file until late August in November races.

Also does anyone have a copy of the wording of the ballot question that Healy/ Matsikoudis is taking a hissy fit over?

Question:

"Should the Municipal Council of the
City of Jersey City change the date of its regular municipal elections from the second Tuesday in
May to the day of the general election in November, pursuant to the Uniform Nonpartisan Elections
Law, N.J.S.A. 40:45-7, to effectuate efficiencies and cost savings of at least $400,000?"

Interpretive statement:

"The purpose of this non-binding referendum vote is to ascertain the publics
support for the change in the date of the regular municipal elections from the
second Tuesday in May to the date of the general election of November pursuant to
the Uniform Nonpartisan Elections Law, N.J.S.A. 40:45-7. A referendum will provide
the Municipal Council with an indication of whether or not the public favors the
change. If the vote is favorable, the Municipal Council may adopt an ordinance to
effectuate the change.
This change would mean that the Municipality would not have to undertake the
expense of funding a separate, additional election in May, which costs at least
$400,000. A November election should also minimize voter fatigue.
The term of those elected officials presently holding office would be extended from
July 1st to December 31st. The Municipal Council would be precluded from adopting
an ordinance to change the regular municipal elections back to the second Tuesday
in May for a period of at least 10 years"

Being in a redevelopment zone doesn't give someone else the right to your property.

Are they in a bind? All the non-vacant properties on that list have been on the list for more than a decade. I think all of them are in the redevelopment plan that's been on the city website:

What does that feedback indicate when it comes to the posed policy question vis-?-vis race reporting.

Don't intend it to be a cop-out. The conversation is really about our company's policy and I'm not a company spokesman. I also don't create our policies. I initially wrote that the apparent vandal in the Silverman graffiti story is white but users here are right that that is not our policy, so I changed it. If you're this concerned that not reporting the race of suspects is unfair to white people, you have to take that up with the editors.

Terrence, does the JJ have a written policy regarding when they will mention a criminal suspect's race? You seem to be implying when there is a picture of the suspect, the article will say it. As others have mentioned, this doesn't seem accurate. But if that is your stated policy then I assume we will have consistency.

For consistency's sake I removed that he is white. I presume this will end the controversy here.

I can only speak for myself, but I did not care that you said he was white. I think the reason you are seeing this reaction is that folks simply want to see a stated policy that is consistently and evenly applied.

In other words, no double standards.

Again, speaking for myself, l would prefer that race always be mentioned if available. This is how it's always been done and I see no reason not to include it if available. Plus it would help to identify and catch the suspect in the admittedly small chance someone spots him.

But applying the same standard to everyone is what's fair.

This is a really a conversation for my editors. Anyone who cares about this should reach out to them.

This is the PERFECT encapsulation of PC run amok: the Jersey Journal will go out of their way to avoid stating the race or skin color of a criminal that happens to be a minority or non-white, but don't use the same standard/restraint when it comes to someone who happens to be white. Hypocrisy at its finest.

As someone else pointed out, there are pictures of this guy. There's no point leaving his race out of it when the pictures in the story show what it is.

Great article. It's nice to see a reporter with memory who will hold those in power accountable.

I particularly liked this bit of hypocrisy from Fulop:
