I have done the bus and it was fine, probably quicker than the airtrain/NJ Tranist and certainly alot cheaper. Plus you save one up/down transfer of your luggage. The one problem i see is that the bus schedule wasnt all that frequent so beware of that.

Please read this excellent article (pre-Sandy) about the rebuilding of the WTC. It dives deep into the workings of the Port Authority and touches on the many issues surrounding PATH. Helps to understand the ever increasing costs coupled with decreasing service levels.

Re: More cops on the street, why now Healy?

thanks for sharing. one has to wonder why we just cant have a few cops walk the streets. i suppose this thing was free from the feds (I used to live in Santa Fe where the local PD got a tank from Homeland Security...), but I have seen all the cameras installed around Greenville, and wonder who is looking at those video feeds? We just got a bunch installed in Bayside Park, but guess what---needles and crack vials and graffiti still happening.
time and time again, cities have reduced crime and improved livability when cops walk and ride bikes on patrol. it seems simple to me. If JC has 600-700 cops, couldnt 10% of them go on foot patrols? I am sure that would be noticed.

I agree that Fulop was the only source of useful info during the gas shortage and power outage. Thanks to his info we were able to find gas on 14th street without waiting on Thursday of the storm week. This is a good show of leadership and concern.

Need central air conditioning unit serviced--try Royal

I highly recommend Royal Heating and Cooling, 201-434-0315 located in JC.
Chris and his Dad Don run the business and were able to fix my central AC unit when the first person I hired was unable to diagnose a very strange problem. They stayed with it, even though they were very busy with the 100 degree heat days, and were very fair with the charge. Jack

I had Clearwire and they are simply terrible. Slow and constant outages. Plus they want a two year term.
I went with Fios for data only 15/5 and am paying $55/month. Because it is data only (internet) they do not add the junk fees and taxes you get with phone and TV. I couldnt be happier with Netflix, my Roku box and the speed which consistently tests out as advertised. I am no fan of Verizon, but they did get this one right.

Re: should Jersey City create and implement on-street bicycle lanes?

I have to agree that in a city where horrible driving habits rule, the bike lanes will give a false sense of security to cyclists. In my area of town, people are always double parked, even on streets like Garfield and Danforth that are extremely busy. And i dont even recall how many times i have been passed on Garfied by the Bayview Cemetary, sometimes on the left and sometimes on the right.
until these drivers get the word that violations are serious and expensive I think bike lanes would just be seen as another passing lane.

While i feel safe, i just fume when almost every day people ask me for a ticket. I cont understand why people that pay for a ticket would give it to someone who is stealing a free ride, costing all us payers more money.
Down on my end of the rail, Greenville, I almost never see the "fare inspectors" However, last week i spotted a gaggle of them at the Hoboken station. With the coffee and pastries, Id stay there too! Lastly i read that LA is abandoning its HBLR-like ticket system and replacing it with a PATH-like turnstile system. Smart move, we should too! Maybe NJ Transit could scam some Homeland security bucks to pay for it by including a terrorist detector scanner from Halliburton.

Nice and clean, good quality produce, fair prices, friendly service.
I also like the Twin City Market in JC just next Bayonne on Garfield/Broadway. For those in Greenville, the only decent place to shop here. The Pathmark on 440 is lwhat a supermarket run by MTA would be like. Shopping carts locked up so you cant use them, surly employees, filthy conditions, etc.

YES! Anyone successfully rid themselves of these pesky little ants?

So what works well is to mix Boric Acid with sugar and water. You can get Boric Acid at Home Depot sold as roach and ant killer, but be sure to read the label to see that it is 99% Boric Acid.
Mix a teaspoon or so with about that much sugar and water, make into a syrup, and put it near the ants path. In a few hours you should see them gorging on it, and in a day or so, no ants. Boric acid is relatively non-toxic to humans and pets so is safe to use in kitchens. Just keep the qty small in case your cat or dog get into it and try to place out of reach of your pets and kids!

Just walking through my neighborhood park, Bayside Park, and seeing all the garbage strewn around, makes me so disappointed in those people.
I wish the JC Police would start enforcing littering laws by writing tickets so the message would get around that there is a price to pay for making nasty to our streets and parks.

Re: Let's get City Hall to change the daily street "cleaning" sched

This hits all my hot buttons about Jersey City.
First, we need to start a "DONT TRASH JERSEY CITY" campaign. Many parts of this town are an absolute disgrace, looking like a 3rd world country. I am from the west where littering is not socially acceptable. We need a program in JC in schools, churches, and community centers to let people know its not cool, and disrespects all of us. THe City needs to enforce the program with tickets and fines, and of course, it would help to see alot more foot and bike patrols by the JCPD. Permanent signs and banners should be put up around town, in multiple languages, and should also mention that violaters will be fined. Street cleaning staff positions could be reassigned to street patrols, as it doesnt do much good to clean the streets when the sidewalks are filthy. One way too encourage neighborhood efforts would be to allow an area to opt out of 4 day a week street sweeping once they met a cleanliness criteria in their area, which is being trialed in NYC. Cleaning up JC should not be an impossible task...

Downtown Jersey City major streets very unsafe and bad access for pedestrians
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|

As a year long resident here I couldnt agree more. The problem is that even though there is a law in NJ requiring cars to stop at designated crosswalks, nobody does. Just like there are laws requiring people to pick up their dog's crap, and not throw litter on the streets.
Heres the solution, I think: 1. Get some cops back on the street, either on foot or on bike. This was the case when mayor Bret was in charge, and is very successful in many other cities. 2. Start advertising that JC is going to enforce the law--stopping for peds, picking up dog poo, and not trashing our city. This could be done on utility bills, or simply everywhere that "Mayor Jeremiah T. Healy" appears on trucks, signs, sides of cars, etc. 3. Have those street cops give out tickets liberally to violators. Word will get around fast when a couple of hundred people get $200 tickets. Note that NYC is ticketing bikes running through red lights to the tune of $250! Ouch... JC has so much potential, but people need to feel like they are safe. Cleaning up the place and showing courtesy to peds could go a long ways in improving our city and not cost us anything.
