Re: Downtown: Williamsburg's Barcade (Bar Arcade) Coming to Newark Avenue
Home away from home
Home away from home

I sent them an email and they got back to me last night. Nothing to worry about, read on...

Yes, we are still opening in Jersey City. What happened was that we received a lot of press way too early. The paperwork process of drawing up plans, getting all the contractors in place and preparing for construction can take quite a bit of time. We're still shooting for a winter opening, hopefully. If you'd like you can track us here:

Thanks,

You think property taxes and maintenance aren't a factor in your rent?

Of course, but that's the landlords responsibility. You don't have to worry as much renting, and my rent+utilities is much cheaper than any mortgage payment, and that's before you throw in all the other costs of ownership. I'm just saying a lifetime of me renting could end up being half as much as buying. This is specific to me though, I'm just saying you aren't necessarily throwing away money if you rent.

they have probably been pressured to remodel by the surrounding establishments that despise any signs of real culture

I don't expect anyone to open a full-on vegetarian restaurant (like Candle 79 in Manhattan) but if you had 3-4 vegetarian selections on the menu, I'd frequent it.

Downtown would be preferred.

FYI: Pasta Primavera, Veggie Burgers and Ravioli don't count - use tofu, seitan and tempeh in an imaginative way and we'll all be beating a path to your door with our dollars.

Can we finally pave the minefields that are C. Columbus and Newark Ave now? I've never seen anything like it. I've driven on unpaved roads in foreign countries that are better than these.

Not by much but the path, or h&m railroad, predates nyc subways, but that's besides the point because we were comparing it to the dc metro built much later. And most of the path trains are 30 years older than current mta trains, that may account for your bumpy ride. Excuse my 'historical ignorance' I was just assuming that engineeing practices got better with time.

Yeah, and Guiliani was the best mayor NYC ever had Pangloss.

If the PATH were interested in safety, the trains wouldn't throw people around like ragdolls. Ride on the DC Metro, for instance, and let me know when you get tossed. Never happens.

It's nice that they clean out the crap at point A or Z, but those of us riding in the middle get sticky feet, yesterday's news, today's vomit, and the ever-fun game of "kick the can."

I'd much rather the cars were COATED in graffitto and ran more often then wasting time taking tagged cars out of commission.

As for cheap, it's about half the cost of driving, which, if timed right, is a much more pleasant experience than the PATH ever is.

uh the path was built like 70 years before the DC metro, of course it won't be as smooth. the path is already cleaner, cheaper, and more pleasant than the MTA like many others have said in this thread and that's good enough for me. if i go to work from my girlfriend's place in brooklyn there's a delay almost every time and i'm late by at least ten minutes. on the path i haven't been late due to a delay in months.

no, not the cactus taco and avocado tostada. youre referring to the beans containing lard. i figured that out when i tried ordering a vegetarian burrito there.

jersey city has pizza, tacos, falafel, and asian/indian foods covered pretty well. you would make a killing by opening a vegetarian place like kates joint or life cafe from nyc or at least something that offers a vegan brunch menu. those places both have a bar and are constantly packed. i think we have a similar demographic in downtown jc.

where did you get that from? the lowest elevation is 100 ft and everything I read says it would connect to penn station which by default connects it to the subway. and you don't think there would be elevators?

And that, in a nutshell, is the main problem with the state of our city at this point in time. Crime is obviously a key issue, but the city's current infrastructure is an even more important issue. The administration has allowed (and fostered) the speedy development of the waterfront and other areas of the city, but we are not keeping up with the growth, and the impact can be seen everywhere. Our roads are in very poor condition, the PATH is usually stuffed during the rush hour commuting hours, countless water mains are breaking all over the place, the police force (as a ratio of beat officers to citizens) is getting smaller and smaller... If we continue down this path, the city will collapse under its own weight. And, what a shame... a more balanced approach to growth could, and should, yield better results for everyone. Instead, we are all getting the shaft by the effects of poor planning to maintain and grow the city's infrastructure.

This is exactly it - if you remove a huge watershed like the Embankment and replace with 1500 condo units that are now hooking into the decrepit sewer lines, that water has to go somewhere. And that somewhere is probably resident basements, once again. It's easy to be in favor of this when you don't lives anywhere near an area where the ramifications would be felt.

Yes the water has to go somewhere, that's why the civil engineers hired by the developer are required by law to design something to manage the stormwater, such as an underground detention basin. Your basement might flood but it will not flood because they put condos where the embankment is.
