Re: How bad is your Comcast Internet?

I don't have that problem. I play games pretty much daily and I don't have intermittent lag. My latency is almost always fairly decent and aside from some late night screwups this past month, it has been pretty much interruption free. Having said that, the prices one pays for cable & net are damned outrageous, and I would switch in a heartbeat to another competitor, except there are none because they have a monopoly here.

I've shopped there pretty much every week for the past 8 years and have yet to purchase bad meat or vegetables from them.

"no money". And that's where this 'vision' will stop.

Seriously, I've been in JC since 1988 and this is like the 4th version of an idea for Journal Square.

It's all BS.

We will see this vision after we get a Whole Foods, Atomic Wings, Trader Joes, footbridge connecting the Hoboken waterfront, rents come down, dogs get leashed, crime vacated and Healy serving 16 concurrent life sentences.

Yup. If we had a normal proactive police force they would be shaking down people on the Light Rail who are evading the fare, just like the cops did under Ray Kelly in NYC. They cut crime drastically and confiscated a lot of weapons just by arresting turnstile jumpers.

But then that was Ray Kelly in NYC.

I've seen them checking tickets three times this month alone. Considering I used to see them maybe once every three weeks, thats a big jump. I'll also point out that I use the Light Rail on average six times a week or so. So we're talking 3 in 10 vs 1 in 18.

I obviously used my own napkins, or my keyboard would be dead by now due to grease. That isn't the point, however. When you get food from somewhere, they're supposed to provide you with what you need to eat it. Plastic forks/spoons/knives and napkins are standard. Very few places are that fraking cheap, and no place that serves something as inherently messy as ribs should fail to provide napkins.

Ordered delivery from there for the first time after eating at the place a few times many moons ago. So many things were mediocre or worse with this meal.

Order: Full rack of ribs, comes with fries and rice. Cheeseburger for roommate coming home from the airport later.

Cons:
-Why are there olives on my ribs and fries? Not mentioned in the menu, I hate olives and hell, maybe I'm allergic? Don't add foods to a dish that aren't mentioned in the menu. Who the hell orders ribs and fries and gets olives?
-Fries are very plain. Lightest of seasoning, needs more to it than whatever it is they use.
-Ribs are very unevenly cooked. Some are great, some are burnt. Would prefer a different seasoning, but plain is kind of decent with the right sauces.
-Not enough sauce. A couple tablespoons of two different bbq sauce aren't enough for a full rack of ribs and fries.
-No napkins. Hi, I'm eating ribs, can i get some napkins pls?
-Delivery charge. This is the only place in the area I'm aware of that charges for local delivery. Yea, that comes out of the delivery guys tip.

Pros:
-Decent delivery time. ~20 minutes.
-Ribs that were cooked properly were fantastic.
-Rice was excellent, best part of the meal.

Re: DO NOT park at PepBoys, BJs, Shoprite to go to Newport Mall right now

I don't think they actually make that much money off the parking. They have to charge something to discourage commuters and others from treating the mall lot as some sort of park-and-ride. If you look at the fee schedule for parking there, the cost to park there shoots up exponentially after 4 hours. If they didn't do that, I can picture a lot people driving there and then taking the PATH the rest of the way to work.

That's exactly why they did that. The lot would be max capacity on busy shopping days (like say... this month) from commuters using it as free parking for the path and ferries.

So here's the story, having gone back to Shoprite to inquire. Turns out any juice that is not '100% juice' - as in added preservatives, sugar, etc. is taxable as of Jan 1, 2007. No idea as to why it was changed last year, but it was.

Oh bull. I went there as a kid and taught there just a few years ago. It's one of the safer grammar schools in Jersey City. Are any of them carrying some weapon? Sure, odds say at least a few are, and your odds are probably greater when you're talking about kids throwing rocks at windows, but the vast majority do not.

Someone asked where Cordero is, its PS 37 on Erie between Pavonia and 9th.

Sliced carrot-bread was prepared and processed as well. And was yummy, I might add.

Sales tax head-scratcher
Home away from home
Home away from home

Shopping this evening, I noticed something odd. I was charged 3 cents sales tax on about $33 dollars worth of food at Shoprite. Clearly, only one item was the offending piece, but all I bought were perishables. So there I am, wondering what the hell I purchased that could possibly be taxed?

Who wants to guess which of the following items is taxable: broccoli crowns, sliced mushrooms, porterhouse steak, arizona iced tea, 2% milk, wheat thins, lemon juice, sliced carrot-bread, plum tomatos, banana yogurt, hellman's mayonnaise, florida natural orange juice. Answer at the end of this post.

OK, I got nothing else to add. I was taxed on iced tea. WTF? Those who paid attention in history will sarcastically recall that a tax on tea was a catalyst for the revolutionary war. I thought we got rid of tax on this farking stuff!

Gotta agree with injc on this one. I've worked at Snyder and that particular stretch on MLK is damned poor. That entire side of the block across from the Burger King was empty lots and abandoned buildings. Still is, last I looked. Calling that area a tough neighborhood is accurate. Blunt, but accurate.

I actually spoke to one of the homeowners where the trees were cut down. Turns out one of them was infected - it was half hollow and leaning way to the side. The other two on the public sidewalk were apparently interfering with the sewer system and the stability of the road. I can buy that because there have been about four or five sinkholes in as many years.

I live on 5th between Erie and Manilla, and three trees on the public sidewalk have been cut down lately. The largest one on the block at about five stories high, which was in a private yard, came down yesterday, making the count four. What the hell is going on with the uglification(TM) of my block?

The chopped potatoes were not even mentioned on the menu for this dish.

This seems to be a recurring theme. I had the duck from them a couple weeks ago and one of the ingredients was fig. While it was very delicious, not even the waiter knew what it was and had to ask the chef. Given how some people are allergic to certain things, leaving them off the menu seems like asking for a lawsuit from some freaked out individual.
