Re: Steven Fulop - Newark Avenue Update

Steve,

Thank you for posting this.

I have seen those metal plates that goes around the trees. They were put in on Bergen Avenue between Journal Square and McGinley Square. I find that they are too big for the sidewalks. The metal plates take up half the sidewalk. That leaves very little sidewalk for people to walk on.

Please visit Bergen Avenue and see for yourself.

Joe called me twice, Al Gore once. Now Bill Cllinton just called me. All of a sudden, I am so popular.

Al Gore thanked me for doing my part for global warming by shutting down JCList and the computer when I go to bed.

There are 7 more choices on the ballot. Or we can write in "Steve Fulop".

1. Socialist Workers Party
2. Socialist USA
3. Legalize Marijuana (G.R.I.P.)
4. Libertarian Party
5. God We Trust
6. Solidarity, Defend Life
7. Poor People's Campaign

Joe called me too this afternoon. Al Gore called this morning. It was funny hearing Al Gore's voice after I saw Darrell Hammond played him last night on Saturday Night Live.

90 Years Ago, New York harbor blew up

By: RICHARD PYLE (Sat, Jul/29/2006)

NEW YORK - The sound of the blast was unearthly, and the tremor was felt 100 miles away in Philadelphia. The night sky over New York Harbor turned orange. From Bayonne to Brooklyn and beyond, people were jolted from bed as windows shattered within a radius of 25 miles.

The Statue of Liberty, holding high its torch less than a mile from the epicenter, was damaged by a rain of red-hot shards of steel. On nearby Ellis Island, frightened immigrants were hastily evacuated to Manhattan.

Ground zero itself - a small island called Black Tom - all but disappeared, "as if an atomic bomb fell on it," says historian John Gomez.

It was 2:08 a.m. on Sunday, July 30, 1916, when what was then the largest explosion ever in the United States erupted. It destroyed an estimated 2,000 tons of munitions parked in freight cars and pierside barges, awaiting transfer to ships destined for Britain and ultimately, the World War I battlefields of France.

Black Tom Island is now part of Liberty State Park.

Marketwatch had an article today about getting an appraisal before you sell.

Five things to know about home appraisals
Getting one before a home hits the market can save time and money
By Amy Hoak, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:58 PM ET Jul 16, 2006

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Price your home incorrectly and it could mean a long stay on the market, a final selling price lower than what the house is worth or both.
That's why some homeowners are electing to pay $300 to $400 for an appraisal before putting their homes on the market, said Alan Hummel, past president of the Appraisal Institute and chief appraiser for St. Paul, Minn.-based Forsythe Appraisals LLC.

We have a pretty pathetic choice for mayor. Bloomberg in New York City used to give out his home phone number. Cory Booker in Newark is willing to take a pay cut. What does our mayor do? Ignore our emails? Get drunk? Get naked?

Re: Ordinance for Security Cameras - Steven Fulop

According to the Jersey Journal:
"At 10:50 p.m. Thursday, a 59-year-old man and a 51-year-old man, both of Washington Street, were at Warren and Morris streets when two men approached and one pointed a handgun at them and took money, police reports said."

Gee, I walked by that corner an hour and a half earlier. This is not good.

There are two restaurants at this corner, Presto's and Amelia's. On Warren and Morris Street there are several businesses. If they have cameras, it will help catch the perpetrators, or it will help discourage such crimes. Better street lighting would help too. It is so dark around here.

Steve, we need some incentives to encourage storeowners to put in cameras.

I know they check for carbon monoxide monitors. I was just wondering, is motion light required now or was it just a suggestion? That would be a good deterrent for burglary.

The new developments would love to get Whole Foods here but I don't think they have enough square footage or parking. If I am not mistaken, I think 77 Hudson Street only has 20,000 square feet for retail. Columbus Tower has 31,000 square feet of ground floor retail space.

Look at the square footage in Manhattan:

New York City (Tribeca)
Whole Foods Market
Greenwich St & Warren St
New York, NY
55,000 sq. ft.
Opening date to be announced.

New York City
Whole Foods Market
Bowery & Houston St.
New York, NY
66,000 sq. ft.
Opening date to be announced.

I just saw a report on UPN 9 about the surveillance cameras in East Orange. Residents can go on the web and see what is going on in their neighborhood. If they see something going on, they can report it. There is also an acoustic gunshot sensor that listens for gunshots. Neat. Is Jersey City looking into all this, Steve?

The East Orange Police Department is getting ready to greatly enlarge its public safety ranks, with what's being called the Virtual Community Patrol, Police Director Jose Cordero said yesterday.

Soon-to-be-chosen residents will get access to a a Web site that provides panoramic views of their block, allows them to type in general complaints, pinpoint a problem location, immediately send that information to police headquarters, and simultaneously activate hidden police surveillance cameras, Cordero said.

So what's your point, Pisces1979? How old are you? 27? When I look back, I think I was pretty naive and immature at 27. 1979 was when I started this job.

Do you have a solution, Pisces1979? Do you want us to move to the Marion district and be your neighbor? You know what will happen then? The Marion district will get gentrified, real estate prices will go up, and rent will go up. Is that what you want?

You tell us we are screwed, and then you say, "Oh, by the way, can you help me with the food bomb project up here in Journal Square?" Was that a good idea, Pisces1979?

What insurance agencies do you use to get flood insurance for downtown, especially Paulus Hook? Does the premium vary or is it a standard price? Does the governemt set the price or does the insurance company set the price? What insurance company do you recommend for flood insurance?

I have a condo on the fourth floor. My mortgage company requires me to have flood insurance. I just want to know what insurance agencies and insurance companies you guys use. I do not want to debate whether I need it or not.

Thank you in advance.

I find this paragraph discouraging:

"The Jersey City police acknowledge that the four to seven "call takers" who pass information to dispatchers are neither the most well-paid nor on a particularly high-flying career track."

The police department would be foolish to not promote these jobs as important and worthwhile, and to teach them better customer service. Because these people represent the police department to the public.

I don't have home delivery of the New York Times so I haven't read the article yet, but I found a different article on the internet.

Jersey City grows, but not everywhere

By JANET FRANKSTON
The Associated Press

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Every morning and afternoon, Rachel Schunkewitz prepares four varieties of hummus in her new cafe in downtown Jersey City.

One of the more popular items on the menu is the "Rachel" salad, made with smoked trout, endive and sliced almonds.

Her gourmet menu illustrates how a part of Jersey City has changed in the 30 years since her parents left New Jersey's second largest city for a safer place to raise their children.

"This place used to be an undesirable place to live. It was a place were people went to buy drugs," Schunkewitz, 43, said in the cafe, decorated with exposed brick and flower pedals in the bathroom. "I see a big difference. It's an up and coming area."

If anybody else wants the Guardian Angels in their neighborhood, they can invite them.
