We're just not going to agree on this. We'll see in 4 years what has happened, but there's no magic bullet for reducing crime (despite what Giuliani would have you believe, crime started decreasing rapidly before he got there and decreased at a similar, but slightly lower, rate in almost every major city during his time as mayor).

There are things to be done, and lord knows JC can do a lot more, but if there was an easy formula for this no city would have these sorts of problems and NYC wouldn't still have its own pockets that they can't seem to clean up.

Re: The Dopeness

Could someone else elaborate/clarify this "setup" fee? In the state of New Jersey, it is illegal for a restaurant to impose a cover, corkage or service charge when it lacks a liquor license.

Is it fair to the restaurant? No, as they do incur some expenses, such as providing stemware, service, clean up, etc., but it is the law.

In their (possible) defense, they may not even be aware of the law, as I recall something similar happening with another local restaurant some time ago. Once they were made aware of the law, they stopped charging the corkage fee. There was a thread on that here in JCLIST, but I am too lazy to look it up right now.

I am talking about the entire area of the LES. You must not travel through the entire city like I do, Bergen Lafayette and Gv only have about 8 hot spot that are drug and gang infested. The entire city is not as bad as these 8 spots.

A Jersey City man running from police officers after they responded to a domestic dispute Sunday night was shot by cops multiple times when he reached into his waistband, according to a preliminary investigation, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said.
The 35-year-old Belmont Avenue man is in critical condition at the Jersey City Medical Center, Rubino said.

Police had received a report the man involved in the domestic dispute was carrying a gun, Rubino said. When police arrived, the 35-year-old ran from police toward Monticello Avenue, Rubino said.

According to the initial investigation, police repeatedly ordered the man to stop and show his hands. Police fired when the man reached for his waistband, Rubino said.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and was identified as having been in the possession of the 35-year-old, Rubino said.

Aiyana Cronk/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City police officers were involved in a shooting on Belmont Avenue, between Bergen and Monticello Avenues, late last night, according to a source with limited knowledge of the investigation.

The two officers fired their weapons and were taken to a local hospital for an examination related to stress, the source said.

The shooting took place after 10 p.m. at a two-family house and involved the first-floor tenant, according to the second-floor resident.

Details on the shooting were not immediately available, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said.

There were no apparent bullet holes or police tape this morning, according to Jersey Journal staff writer Anthony Machcinski. A woman was seen walking into the first-floor apartment, but did not answer the door.

Jersey City police spokesman Stan Eason referred questions to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, which is investigating the shooting.

Re: Refrigerator - recommendations?

Personally, I am a big fan of KitchenAid. Their appliances (both large, and small) have done well by me in the past, but declining results more recently. They do have some great warranties on the larger appliances. I bought a stainless steel fridge from them around February 2002, and it is still going, without issues (other than the freezer ice box sensor acted "funny" for a few months, then correcting itself). I am now renting a unit fitted with KA oven/range, fridge, microwave and dishwasher and have had a few interesting issues. A resistor in the oven/range blew up after using the self cleaning function for the oven (simple, cheap fix) and the radiator grills inside the freezer area froze up, which resulted in the water line freezing. The solution/fix was very simple, but messy (unscrew internal, back panel of freezer, pour boiling water on the radiator grills, unfreeze water line with hair dryer.) The biggest disappointment has been the microwave, which stopped working after 5 or 6 years, and was impossible to fix. Overall, it seems like quality has declined in recent years. From what I have read, some (all?) of their large appliances are no longer made in the USA. I know Whirlpool makes their fridges, and perhaps some of the other ones.

I'm not saying he can't improve things, I'm saying he doesn't have a magic wand to make it disappear quickly. You want it 'cleaned up' in 4 years? That's simply not going to happen.

I lived on Orchard and Broom when Rudy became mayor and it was cleaned up within six months not 20 years. Besides Fulop ran on quality of life for the entire city not just part of it. Just as easily we voted him in we can vote him out.

I just spoke with with aplicance company and the rep recommended this brand (which I've never heard of), since I told him I want to stay away from Bosch (which broke my heart).

I just called an appliance company about this, and the person recommended these 2 models:

LG LFC25765
KitchenAid KBFS22EWMS

I'll do some googling to get reviews and such on these, but also want to ask here if anyone has experience with them?

Thanks for all the replies so far!!!

Thanks. How bad was the flooding in your area during Irene and Sandy, or any other rainstorms? Can you prevent damage by actively taking certain measures?

The house is to the west of Monmouth and currently it does not have a sump pump in place and the first floor is hardwood. My realtor said this might be a good indicator - that they did not need one. We actually had the viewing on May 9, the day after the rainstorm and everything was fine; however we walked by yesterday when it rained and saw sand bags outside of the house near the crawl space.

I just would like to assess if it is the kind of risk that can be mitigated by installing a sump pump, a back-up sump pump, ect. We really like the home, but if the whole street would get flooded during heavy rain or storms, then sump pumps may not help at all? If the situation cannot be remedied by us making efforts to prevent flooding,we want out.

Candidates in Jersey City council races eye dropping out of runoff elections

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal
May 20, 2013 at 7:26 AM

At least one candidate in the forthcoming Jersey City council runoff elections is bowing out of the race, and others may be considering it as well.

Gerald Meyers, who came in second last Tuesday in his bid to win the Ward B council seat, told The Jersey Journal Friday he doesn?t want to participate in the runoff election.

Omar Perez, whose at-large council team came in second behind Mayor-elect Steve Fulop?s three-person team, has also expressed interest in bowing out, according to a city source.

Sources say Councilman at large Peter Brennan, who ran on Healy?s ticket with Perez, may also ask voters not to consider him for the runoff. Requests for comment from Brennan and Perez were not returned.

??State election law says candidates cannot be removed from runoff election ballots unless they die seven days or more before the election. City Clerk Robert Byrne said Friday that candidates would have to sue him to force him to remove their names.

Meyers, 65, a part-time Hudson County worker, ran on incumbent Mayor Jerramiah Healy?s council slate (Healy lost to Fulop). He finished in second place on Election Day, coming in about 200 votes behind Fulop ally Khemraj ?Chico? Ramchal.

Meyers told The Jersey Journal he thinks it would cost about $30,000 to campaign between now and the June 11 runoff, and he said he doesn?t have the funds.

?Wish I had money trees in the backyard,? he said, adding that he also worries that he?ll miss family gatherings if he?s elected to the council.

Re: Journal Square is NOT a Homeless Shelter
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

The bathrooms are in the hallway (which I lovingly refer to as the Homeless Mall) as you are walking towards the Summit Ave exit - it's on the same ground level as the Hudson News.

I have been walking through the JSQ station twice a day, at least five days a week, for a handful of years now and can attest to the occasional nuisance of the homeless population. Although I have personally never been harassed by any of the homeless people (the self-styled Romeos in the neighborhood, however, are a different story) there have been more than enough arguments amongst themselves where I have asked the police in the station there to address the issue so that I can get through the doors unscathed.

I've spoken with the JCPD Community Response Team in the past about this very issue but frankly there's only so much that the police can (or will) do and it usually involves a lot of diligence on your part. At the very minimum you should file a report with them outlining your grievances, and any time you are harassed/threatened you should immediately walk over to the police station and tell them to do something about it. A solution isn't going to happen overnight, but I worked with one of the Response Team detectives to resolve a problem near my house and he worked with the city to get the job done in short order. Any task involving the city means that you have to be on your game and follow up repeatedly.

Re: Flooding 5th & Monmouth - HELP

I know the house you're referring to. I'd be very concerned about living there because the street level space IS the living/kitchen space. We live further down 5th toward Coles, and in the rainstorm 2 weeks ago, the water got to 2 inches about the sidewalk at that intersection. If it rained that hard for another 15-30 min, I think that house would flood again.

If any par of the home is below ground level, you should prepare for flooding events at least every few years. Sewer backups are a problem as well. The basement at 328 Fifth Street floods regularly, but it is a poorly managed slum.

Flooding 5th & Monmouth - HELP
Newbie
Newbie

My husband and I are considering purchasing a home at 5th St and Monmouth. We are from Queens and are not familiar with the flooding issues here in downtown Jersey City. The seller said that they experienced flooding in Irene and had to replace the hardwood floor and lower section of the walls on the first floor, but they did not experience flooding/damage during Sandy. They said Irene was the only flooding experience they had in the past 7 years.

We'd like to know how bad the situation is around this area, as I saw some posts saying the corner of 5th and Monmouth is low-lying. Do you have to worry about water when it rains heavily, or is it just a once-in-30-years experience type of thing? How do you see it affect your daily life?

Your input is highly appreciated.

I agree. It seems a waste when the winners already won fair and square.

You might not feel that way if you backed a loser who got 2nd place with 12% in a field of 15 candidates. That person might stand a great chance of winning the runoff. Look up how Schundler won a special "no runoff" election with 17 percent of the vote in field of 19 candidates. This is why instant runoff makes so much sense.

Great in theory, but many voters couldn't figure out there were 3 atlarge candidates. You gotta keep things very simple...

I'm not sure why anyone is complaining.

I've seen roughly a dozen of the Dixon properties. The contractors do fantastic work turning outdated apartments into modern, well-crafted apartments. All units have stainless steel appliances, washer/dryer (if they fit), new windows along with hardword floors and plumb walls. These units are pretty nice, in my opinion.

If all the units in downtown were this nice, the rents would be substantially higher.

Also, to the one guy that said his rent was raised 80% - that is illegal. If that was the case, you should have taken them to court.

I agree, they have done wonders here and brought in very good renters. No complaints here, besides no families are rushing to buy the many 1 family 2 family homes here so therefore I say keep it up.

Dixon has a strong marketing machine - slick website and aggressive sales staff. They take newbies to Jersey City, get them signed into a one year lease at rents significantly above market rate, and by next lease renewal, the tenants will realize that they overpaid, and are gone. Let the buyer/renter beware, but Dixon Leasing usually doesn't offer a good value to renters.

My fascination with Lopez has moved on past the residency scandal. That scandal was certainly unfortunate but I think it makes more sense to bring the discussion to the present and what is going on here and now. Im more interested in the mystery of how she got so many votes without ever engaging with the public on any level, she had an invisible campaign in which I never saw a single poster with her name on it, I never heard any talking points about her intentions and she failed to show up for the one debate she was asked to attend. The only time she popped up in the news was when she denounced Healy for mentioning hispanic women durring the "front porch scandal". its the only time I have seen her quoted in years. If she had any other sort of public presence during the campaign I missed it. This invisibility is nothing new since during her entire political career I have never heard her speak, I have never been made aware of what she does or intends to do and I have never seen her. Yet seamingly without effort she got 1481 votes against Boggiano's 1686 votes, which is amazing since Boggiano has been working hard at engaging with the community on every level and running a highly visible campaign. I have to assume that Lopez got all those votes either because I have no idea how things are done in ward C OR its due to being on the Fulop ticket. If Team Fulop supports Lopez (and why would they switch gears now?) they should have no trouble explaining to those of us in Ward C why they believe Lopez deserves another term. They could start (and this is what I have been asking for all along) by simply outlining what Lopez has done for the community thus far AND explain her concrete goals for the future. If Team Fulop supported Lopez than surely they had good reason to and will be able to explain why they backed her and why shes good for Ward C. I'm keeping an open mind and I'm even prepared to vote for Lopez IF someone can demonstrate why I should. Why I even need to ask for this sort of information strikes me as odd.

City council members basically do two things, legislate (enact laws) and work to resolve constituent's problems. I'm not a resident of Ward C and have no first hand experience in dealing with Ms. Lopez. I do know that after she became a drag on the Administration, Ms. Lopez aligned herself with Fulop at a time when the Fulop council people were in the minority. She also appeared to hedge her bets and had an alliance with Viola Richardson. IMHO she voted independently, and certainly more often than not, opposed the administration stalwarts - Gaughan, Brennan & Sottolano. Surely she deserves some credit for her voting record. It would be useful if ward C residents or others that needed her help with constituent issues could weigh in.
