Re: Flamingo Diner

New owner. They're doing some renovation, and I saw a sign for construction (gas piping) but no idea what's going on. Maybe the gas piping means they're going to move the kitchen to a more sensible place.

Brownstone has some amazing pancakes, but they're not the greasy spoon kinda diner I need.

Also, those empty storefronts at Grove are going to stay empty for a long time, as well as the space above. Apparently the landlord is a real dick and has very strict expectations about what will go there. Plus he's asking a load of money.

In somewhat related news, word is that Barrow St Bar was already bought by someone that is going to be putting a new bar in the space.

but were they even working? I don't think I saw a tiny bit of work in that entire time. Also couldn't it just be that their construction permits were for 4 months and expired?

It's been what now, 4 months? I saw a stop work order on the window today. Looks like there hasn't been any work done on it since the first week anyway. I hope it isn't shut down for good =(

The idea of rehabbing the warehouses is an elitist's pipe dream.

the one in Brooklyn has no TVs. It's just a big room with a bar, a few tables and chairs, and walls full of old games like Smash TV, Donkey Kong, Spy Hunter, etc. Not the kind of place to go watch a game, it's a place to play videogames. The beer selection is only local brews, btw. Stuff that's brewed within 5 hours of driving.

Games are just 25 cents btw. Not like a lot of bars that rip you off with 75 cents for a game of pacman.

is it even legal to have a bedroom with no windows? That's a major fire code violation isn't it?

I think you should report her and move out of there.

If he stays open to 3AM I'll surely be there late nights. Getting sick of fried chicken.

He needs to flash it up though. That building is just so bleak.

yeah you didn't see the new sign in the back of the restaurant? I forgot the new name but it's someone else now. Not sure why they haven't changed the sign outside tho.

Barrow isn't exactly the rowdiest bar in the city, so I don't know why people are hating on it. But it was indeed closed again this weekend. I wonder if it really is shut down?

They've got a bunch of TVs it's a good place to watch games, there's always a crowd during football and baseball games.

Nice little outdoor patio too, and a pool table.

I like Barrow and they often have great drink deals, but at times I think they're inconsistent with pricing. I was once charged $20 for a pitcher, when I'm pretty sure it would have been cheaper to just buy a few pints instead.

Re: Rumi Turkish Grill - 60 Sussex St

Home away from home

I went there a while ago at lunchtime, and while it seemed a good place to get a sandwich, it was hardly real Turkish food. The food was ok, and the red lentil soup was good, but not a very Turkish menu. They?ve got hamburgers on the menu, and regular sandwiches, and the breakfast menu is entirely pancakes, omelettes, and other non-Turkish things. Appetizers are mostly just American things as well. Fries with a gyro? And the bread I was given was some cheap pita bread? What about real bread for my soup? Where?s the clotted cream & honey for breakfast? The pide? The lahmacun? The sigara borek?

Also when I went the place was super busy with only one waitress. Might have had someone call in sick that day so I won?t hold that against them. Definitely a lunchtime type of place.

You'd probably be the only driver with the patience to sit behind a biker in the middle of the road.

The problem with biking in most cities is that there's no place for them. If I bike on the sidewalk, no matter how courteous I am about it, people get angry. If I bike in the road, I've got zero safety, and cars get mad at me.

Until there are bike lanes, you can't even make progress towards better relations. At least in NYC you have cars in car lanes, bikes in bike lanes, people in people lanes. Sometimes the rules are broken, but the majority of people stay in their respective lanes.

Also, all of that was said as if pedestrians don't break the rules every day too. I have countless times nearly mown down pedestrians because they start jaywalking against the light, completely oblivious that there are any bikes coming.

Re: Parking Too Close to Crosswalks
Home away from home

bbbbbuumpmppp

I was looking at NJ parking laws to see if there was a provision for towns to override them, since there?s no way anyone could park anywhere if those laws were enforced. Practically every spot is within 25 feet of a crosswalk, 50 feet of a stop sign, or 10 feet of a hydrant.

And yes, thankfully there is a provision for that. But now comes the task of finding out what JC?s parking laws are.

1. Is there anywhere online I can find Jersey City laws, specifically the parking laws?

"Since it was established as an autonomous agency in 1949, the cost of daily operation is not borne by the taxpayers."
2. The JCPA is an autonomous agency, right? It has a CEO, and it?s not financed by taxpayers. So, since we?re not bearing the ?burden? of financing the JCPA, does this mean we?re also not reaping the ?profit? from the bajillions of tickets, towings, and bootings they do each year?

Re: Drinking water

Drinking water is very important.

Also I have a filter for the fridge but only because stagnant water can develop some nasty stuff (I found algae in it a while ago when I wasn't using a filter with the pitcher).

The JC water supply tastes fine though, at least near me, so I usually just drink that with some ice.

Really, unless your water tastes gross, I don't see much need to use a filter. And gp193, I'd bet the sulfur and chlorine tastes have something to do with the piping in your building or your area, since I'm getting my water from the same supply Maybe report it?

Re: Do not use UPS delivery in downtown JC

UPS sucks toenails I?ve had packages left on my stoop too. A friend of mine watched a UPS driver blow right past his house and when he checked online a minute later the tracking number said ?delivery attempted.? Once I heard a doorbell ring so I raced downstairs and got to the door within 10 seconds. The UPS driver was already walking down the block back to his truck.

F UPS

The pickup location in Secaucus sucks too, but at least it isn?t as out of the way as the Fedex places. One in Moonachie is bad enough but once I had to drive all the way down to god damn Keansburg in Monmouth County. I was stuck in the stupid 5x10 foot entranceway where they run metal detectors on their employees, waiting for someone to dig around a warehouse and get my package.

USPS 4 lyfe, yo
Even if you have to pick up a package, at least it?s near your house.

get over yourself. differences in artistic taste do not boil down to prudishness. but, unsuccessful artists often blame the public for being too thick or prudish to understand art, isn't that so? sometimes, the blame is broadened to include "the art world" broadly. that's easier than blaming oneself for his vision or craftsmanship as being simply unmarketable in a particular time and place... or, in general.

in any case, it seems there isn't a market for toilets and firetrap garbage in jersey ciity. because in jc, we're prudes.

agreed. if Uta opened her gallery for the enjoyment of herself and a circle of like-minded friends, then great. if she's trying to run a thriving business, she might want to consider broadening the curb appeal a little.
eh, I think they're cool but whatever. It seems like she does most of her business outside of the storefront anyway so I'm not sure the intention was to make it a thriving storefront.

I don't think those did anything but to drive folks away from actually entering the shop. IMHO.

I did thing the BP oil spill sign was a hoot even if placed illegally on top of a real street sign.

Say it ain't so, Uta! I heard this from my girlfriend via her father, and I hope it isn't true. I know she spends time selling her wares over in Williamsburg and I hope that better sales over there haven't tempted her to deprive us of one of our most unique artist personalities.
