Lunar eclipse to occur tonight

Wednesday, February 20, 2008 | 11:25 AM

Reaches peak at 10:26 p.m.

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Tonight's your last chance to see a total lunar eclipse for nearly three years -- if the weather cooperates.

If skies are clear, the silvery full moon will slowly transform into a dusky red or orange as the eclipse reaches its peak at 10:26 p.m on the East Coast. Then it will slowly revert back to its normal hue by around midnight.

Skywatchers viewing the event through a telescope will also be able to see Saturn and the bright star Regulus on either side of the veiled full moon. Unlike solar eclipses which require protective eyewear, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye.

Weather could be a spoiler for the total eclipse, however. Forecasters say there's a chance of snow from the heartland to the East Coast.

The next chance to see a total eclipse won't be until December 2010.

Is this the place?
http://www.trulia.com/property/104934 ... -Ave-Jersey-City-NJ-07306

I have walked around there around lunchtime. It is quiet. There is a Rite-Aid at Westside Ave and Sip Ave that I have walked to from Journal Square. Sip Ave has a lot of traffic so it is safe, at least in the daytime.

There is a library on Westside Ave. And there is public swimming pool at Westside Ave and Pavonia.

However, there are some apartment buildings on Pavonia Ave with a little police hut there. But then, there is a police hut at Newport Pavonia, too.

I think if you walk home on Sip Ave, you will be okay.

School officials say due to suspicious activity on the campus

JERSEY CITY (WABC) -- Eyewitness News has learned of a lockdown at St. Peter's College in Jersey City.

The lockdown, according to school officials has been in effect since 10:42 a.m., due to suspicious activity.

According to Jersey City Fire Chief William Sinnott says the college received emails from a "disgruntled student" stating he placed bombs placed in several buildings.

He says the school activated a lockdown and is acting out of an abundance of caution.

Perhaps the Jersey Journal or Star Ledger can do a review and tell people where she moved to.

I was looking for this place a few weeks ago, and it was not easy to find. Even at the old location on Newark Avenue near the courthouse, it was easy to walk pass her business and not know that it was open.

She needs help with marketing and advertising.

Most of these kinds of articles are written by people who don't live here, and they don't bother checking the facts.

The article says that :
Jersey City is bounded by the Hudson River on the east, the Hackensack River to the south, Hoboken to the west and 14th Street to the north.

Only the Hudson River is correct.

Also, it says that Ox is probably the only restaurant in Jersey City to serve ox tail.

I have never been to Ox, but I have seen oxtail served in latino and filipino restaurants.

According to the Star Ledger, Robert DeNiro was there too:

Obama was joined onstage this afternoon by Sen. Ted Kennedy, and actor Robert DeNiro also helped warm up the crowd before the Illinois senator took the stage. Newark Mayor Cory Booker, state Senate President Richard Codey and former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley were on hand to greet Obama when he arrived at the Izod Center.

"I've never made a speech like this at a political event before. I'm here because finally one person has inspired me. ...That person is Barack Obama," DeNiro said.

From the Bergen Record:

Obama rides Giants coattails at Meadowlands rally

Monday, February 4, 2008
BY SCOTT FALLON
STAFF WRITER

Presidential hopeful Barack Obama came to the Meadowlands on Monday in a last-ditch effort to court Democratic voters, who only weeks ago leaned heavily towards Hillary Clinton.

Invigorated by a shrinking gap in many New Jersey polls, Obama compared himself to the underdog Giants, who beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl less than 24 hours before. Several thousand supporters at the Izod Center roared their approval.

?We should take heart, Ted. Sometimes the underdog pulls it out,? Obama said to Sen. Edward Kennedy, who joined him onstage with Caroline Kennedy.

Obama?s speech focused on several policy issues like universal healthcare and tuition help for college students. But it also focused on individual responsibility.

?The problem is not that we don?t know what to do. The problem is we don?t have a sense of urgency about it,? Obama said. ?We see a poor child in Newark and say that?s someone else?s problem, that?s not our problem. But let me tell you something: They are all our children.?

Among his New Jersey supporters at the event were former Sen. Bill Bradley; Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fair Lawn; state Sen. President Dick Codey, D-West Orange; and Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

Nearly all of the speakers drew parallels between Obama and the Giants.

?There are no anointed winners,? Rothman said to cheers.

Now, the resident who apparently allowed Ladson to stay with him is in the process of being evicted through the one-strike policy, said Garcia. The "one-strike" policy forces residents to be evicted if they or someone in their household is arrested for a drug offense and/or violent crime.

"Every resident is responsible for their guests and will be held accountable for their guests' actions, even if they are unaware of them," warned Garcia.

He added that with the one-strike policy, there is no recourse. Therefore, within 30 days of when the eviction is finalized, the resident and whatever family members are living with them must be off HHA property.

Jersey City needs a one-strike policy.

A President Like My Father

By CAROLINE KENNEDY

OVER the years, I?ve been deeply moved by the people who?ve told me they wished they could feel inspired and hopeful about America the way people did when my father was president. This sense is even more profound today. That is why I am supporting a presidential candidate in the Democratic primaries, Barack Obama.

My reasons are patriotic, political and personal, and the three are intertwined. All my life, people have told me that my father changed their lives, that they got involved in public service or politics because he asked them to. And the generation he inspired has passed that spirit on to its children. I meet young people who were born long after John F. Kennedy was president, yet who ask me how to live out his ideals.

Sometimes it takes a while to recognize that someone has a special ability to get us to believe in ourselves, to tie that belief to our highest ideals and imagine that together we can do great things. In those rare moments, when such a person comes along, we need to put aside our plans and reach for what we know is possible.

We have that kind of opportunity with Senator Obama. It isn?t that the other candidates are not experienced or knowledgeable. But this year, that may not be enough. We need a change in the leadership of this country ? just as we did in 1960.

Most of us would prefer to base our voting decision on policy differences. However, the candidates? goals are similar. They have all laid out detailed plans on everything from strengthening our middle class to investing in early childhood education. So qualities of leadership, character and judgment play a larger role than usual.

Senator Obama has demonstrated these qualities throughout his more than two decades of public service, not just in the United States Senate but in Illinois, where he helped turn around struggling communities, taught constitutional law and was an elected state official for eight years. And Senator Obama is showing the same qualities today. He has built a movement that is changing the face of politics in this country, and he has demonstrated a special gift for inspiring young people ? known for a willingness to volunteer, but an aversion to politics ? to become engaged in the political process.

I have spent the past five years working in the New York City public schools and have three teenage children of my own. There is a generation coming of age that is hopeful, hard-working, innovative and imaginative. But too many of them are also hopeless, defeated and disengaged. As parents, we have a responsibility to help our children to believe in themselves and in their power to shape their future. Senator Obama is inspiring my children, my parents? grandchildren, with that sense of possibility.

Senator Obama is running a dignified and honest campaign. He has spoken eloquently about the role of faith in his life, and opened a window into his character in two compelling books. And when it comes to judgment, Barack Obama made the right call on the most important issue of our time by opposing the war in Iraq from the beginning.

I want a president who understands that his responsibility is to articulate a vision and encourage others to achieve it; who holds himself, and those around him, to the highest ethical standards; who appeals to the hopes of those who still believe in the American Dream, and those around the world who still believe in the American ideal; and who can lift our spirits, and make us believe again that our country needs every one of us to get involved.

I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president ? not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.

Caroline Kennedy is the author of ?A Patriot?s Handbook: Songs, Poems, Stories and Speeches Celebrating the Land We Love.?

From News12:

Police: Robberies spike at Newport Centre Mall

(01/25/08) JERSEY CITY - Police say the number of robberies at Jersey City?s Newport Centre Mall has risen significantly since December.

In the first case on Dec. 27, police say two robbers beat up two GameStop employees who were in possession of night deposits. The suspects made off with $27,000.

Detectives say over the last two weeks, two men were caught on camera posing as undercover security guards and approaching boys in their teens. According to police, both teens had shopped at GameStop and both were robbed.

One police officer calls the security cameras outside the mall the worst surveillance cameras in the city.

Newport Centre?s public relations firm released this statement: ?Our primary concern is always for the safety and well-being of our shoppers and mall employees. We are fully cooperating with the Jersey City Police Department in its investigation and strongly encourage mall visitors and employees to alert mall security to any suspicious activity.?

'Shame' on Willie Flood airs tonight
by Ken Thorbourne
Wednesday January 16, 2008, 11:22 AM

Television reporter Arnold Diaz's "Shame, Shame, Shame" segment on Jersey City Councilwoman Willie Flood airs tonight at 10 p.m. on WNYWFox 5.

Diaz showed up at City Hall on Dec. 19 to ask Flood, who is also the Hudson County Register, why she hired her son, 29-year-old Phillip Flood II, to work for her in both government offices, especially in light of Flood II's brushes with the law.

Flood II has since resigned his post as aide to the councilwoman but still works for her in her capacity as couty register.

In February 2007, Flood was arrested for selling marijuana out of his mother's Mercedes Benz and in 2006, he had to pay the state back nearly $13,000 in unemployment insurance money he collected even though he was a full-time employee at the Hudson County Schools of Technology when he collected the money.

The drug charge was downgraded to a misdemeanor and Flood II entered pre-trial intervention program to deal with the fraud charge in regard to the insurance money, thereby avoiding a plea.

Does the $3.6 million cover the cost of the neon barrels?

This is hilarious. The barrels are everywhere now.

Now there is a sign at the main post office with a barrel attached to it. The sign is close to the corner of the post office at Montgomery and Washington. It is between the the Montgomery steps and the Washington steps. At least this sign is away from pedestrian traffic. But what is barrel for then? Stupid design.

Run from 'Shame'

Veteran pol flees camera, queries about hiring her son

Friday, December 21, 2007
By KEN THORBOURNE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Jersey City Councilwoman Willie Flood was on the run Wednesday night, but not for another political office.

Flood, who is also the county register, was high-tailing it out of City Hall with her son and veteran TV reporter Arnold Diaz and his camera crew in close pursuit.

Diaz is working on another of his "Shame, Shame, Shame" segments for Channel 5/WNYW-TV, focusing on Flood's hiring of her son, Phillip Flood II, to work for her at both of her public offices.

And nepotism isn't the only angle here.

Earlier this year, Flood II was charged with selling marijuana out of his mother's car, and last year he agreed to repay the state nearly $13,000 in unemployment insurance the state determined he wasn't entitled to.

Diaz and his cameraman and producer had positioned themselves outside the council caucus room on the second floor at City Hall, when Flood and her son, with the help of Heights Councilman Bill Gaughan, tried to give him the slip.

When Diaz briefly wandered down the hallway, Gaughan waved on Flood and Flood II to dart from behind closed doors and toward an exit door.

Diaz and crew gave chase. Down the second-floor steps. Out the back door.

Flood and Flood II jumped into a car, with Flood taking the driver's seat. But once seated, the 68-year-old Flood appeared out of breath with her head slumped on the steering wheel.

"If anything happens to my mom behind this I'm going to sue all of you," Flood II yelled at Diaz. "How could you treat an old lady like this?"

Diaz shot back, "No one told her to run. She is a public official. Why doesn't she just answer the questions?"

Flood II made his way around the car to do the driving, while his mother/boss slid into the passenger's seat while drawing her fur coat up to cover her face from the camera.

Flood recently hired her son as council aide, for $15,000 a year, and as a data processing systems programmer in the Hudson County Register's office, for $38,000 a year.

Flood II's marijuana pinch was downgraded to a disorderly persons offense and referred to Jersey City Municipal Court, where on July 19, he pleaded guilty to possession of drug paraphernalia and was hit with $700 in fines. According to state officials, he repaid the $13,000 in unemployment and agreed to pre-trial intervention, avoiding a guilty plea.

Flood didn't return phone calls yesterday and never returned to Wednesday night's council meeting. Diaz's feature report is expected to air next month.
