Sidewalks are the responsibility of the property owner. You will need to contact the building dept to obtain any permits necessary.

Highland Ave is two blocks long as is Glenwood Ave. Both are good streets and get better the closer to Bergen Ave you get. Parking varies drastically from block to block and time you are looking for a spot. Periodically home owners will post signs to rent out parking spaces in this area but I don't recall how much. My wife and I bought in 2006 and are now raising our two sons. We have no plans to move anytime soon.

What did it for me was Dan defends Healy now after all this time. At least not comment at all about Healy.

Timeline for Velazquez:

October 1, 2010, sworn into the council to replace Mariano Vega after Mariano resigns and subsequently pleads guilty to federal corruption charges

November 8th, 2011, Jersey City speaks about how well Ray performed during his Council tenure and loses in dramatic fashion to both Councilman Lavarro and Councilwoman Richardson.

May 17th, 2012 after the public clearly spoke about his work during his tenure on the council, Mayor Healy STILL appoints him as deputy Mayor. Signs of a political favor?

December 5th 2012, he resigns the same day someone else (Omar Perez) joins Mayor Healy?s ticket. A falling out?

Everything points to Healy making amends with Velazuez for not adding him to his ticket by appointing him as a full time judge.

I stopped a PSEG worker about an hour ago. He was a little apprehensive when I asked if he was the one who had the PSEG truck. I first expressed my appreciation for all the hard work. He response? He took a breath and said THANK YOU!! This guy has his wife and kid back home with no power himself. He's only slept hours the last 48 hours. This poor guy was telling me stories about his life being threatened if he didn't restore power to some people. He was threatened he would be shot and stabbed. Harrassed. You name it. I'm hoping I am stating the obvious. But when you see any PSEG workers, stop them and thank them. Shake their hand even. I think I made this guys day.

The family is grieving, but we have solace in the fact is was incredibly proud to serve.

http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... rangements_announced.html

Recently killed Army soldier Pfc. LeRoy DeRonde III grew up in a "tight knit family" and enlisted in the Army to support his struggling family, his cousin Jason Owen said today.

The Department of Defense announced that DeRonde was one of two soldiers that was killed in Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by enemy fire during patrol on May 27.

The 22 year-old DeRonde grew up in Jersey City and was the middle child of three, leaving behind his younger brother Harold ,18, and older sister Jennifer, 33.
In 2002, the passing of DeRonde's mother from ovarian cancer shook the family to its core.

"At that time the family was going through rough times," Owen said.

When Owen was 27, he and his fiancee became the guardians of DeRonde and his younger brother after DeRonde's mother's death. DeRonde was 16 at the time. DeRonde briefly attended Dickinson and Lincoln High Schools, Owen said today.

"At 20, it clicked for him. He would have to put the family on his shoulders to survive," said Owen, adding that DeRonde began to seriously consider the military.

After getting his GED and taking a few college credit courses, DeRonde left home for basic training in January 2011.

Three months later he was one of five basic training graduates to be promoted to second-class private and was awarded the 1st Battalion 48th Infantry Regiment Order of the Dragon Soldiers.

DeRonde was stationed in Fort Bliss, Texas, and was assigned to the 125th Brigade Support Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.

Owen said his cousin was reserved, and had a heart of gold.

"I think his legacy will be that when he realized that his purpose in life was to help his family, he stepped up to the challenge," Owen said.

On Monday, Soldiers' Angels of New Jersey -- a nonprofit dedicated to helping soldiers and their families -- created a tribute Facebook page for DeRonde.

The viewing for Army Pfc. LeRoy DeRonde III has been scheduled for Thursday and Friday, 5 to 9 p.m. at the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 625 Pavonia Ave. off of Kennedy Boulevard in Jersey City.

The burial will take place 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, the funeral home announced.

DeRonde will be buried at the cemetery's 9/11 Veterans Memorial section with a full military service.

It really depends on what part of Duncan Ave. For example, the closer you are to West Side Ave, the less desireable it is due to the history of crime. However, if you are referring to Dincan Ave and Kennedy Blvd, it is no better or worse than a lot of other neighborhoods.

This is currently in the council's hands. They can vote yes, no or even instruct the planning division to revise the plan before voting on it. Call EVERY council member and tell them you do not support condemning perfectly good homes. Tell them that you do not support Resolution #11-455.

I have started a Facebook page on this for Jersey City residents that wish to support this. http://www.facebook.com/groups/235954 ... #!/groups/235954699758824

Greenvillechick,

There are many animal welfare conferences that actually feel that $175 is not high enough. But your reasons make sense.

Xerxes,
I believe that information would be on the annual report. Just curious though, how would the answer to that question help you? Animal welfare staff in general usually get low pay to begin with.

It has been proved that when you offer something free, income comes in other ways so there really is no loss or substantial loss in doing free promotions.

Another way to look at it is that once the cat or dog is adopted out, there is not longer a cost for LHS associated with that pet. So if a pet would have been there lets say a year or longer without the promotion, a free pet is actually a savings.

Rest assured though, potential adopters go through the same application process whether if there is a fee or not.

Dan,

I like and respect you. Every time we have spoken, you have made sense.

You struck out here. I understand your intent, but what you are doing is in effect giving your approval of Epps. Even if at the end of the day, he stays, he needs to understand he is under a microscope. Giving in on this gives him the green light to continue with his mismanagement of our school system. A contract with some benchmarks will surely be ignored because at that point, he will feel he is untouchable.

Xerxes,
Unfortunately, I do not have those numbers. But if one of the potential issues was a violation of a contract, http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... iberty_humane_societ.html , it stands to reason that what difference would it make if money was not involved.

I may still need my coffee, but thorugh this thread, I do not see the inference that the city does not pay LHS any money. That is not correct. The city does in fact have a contract with LHS and part of this contract does unclude that LHS is paid for their services. However, these funds only cover a fraction of the costs that LHS incurrs. The remaining comes from donors ranging from corporate to individuals.

The by-laws of LHS allow for past presidents to become an interim board in the event that there is no board. This ensures that, as a 501c3, that the organization can still exist.

Jersey City police looking for man who is 'touching and kissing' kids at local park
Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 6:00 AM Updated: Wednesday, June 09, 2010, 11:14 PM
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

Jersey City police are looking for a man who has been grabbing young children and kissing them in several incidents over the past few weeks in Leonard Gordon Park in the Heights, officials said.

On Friday, a report of a man "touching and kissing kids" brought police to the park at Kennedy Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue where a girl told them she saw a man grab her 8-year-old brother from behind and kiss him on the cheek, reports said.

The girl and another witness said it happened May 26 at 4 p.m. but that they called police Friday because they had just seen the same man grab another juvenile and kiss the child on the lips, reports said.

While at the park Friday police also spoke to an 11-year-old boy who said on May 18 a man fitting the same description grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around to face him, reports said.

The boy said the man said to him "What's your name?" but he pushed him away and went back to playing with his friends, reports said. The boy told the cops he often sees the man in the park at around 3 p.m. but has also spotted him there as late at 8 p.m., reports said.

Another officer who responded to the park Friday spoke to a woman who said her 10-year-old granddaughter came home from the park one day during the previous week saying she a man had grabbed her, reports said.

Three people described the suspect as six-feet tall and of Indian descent, reports said, adding that at least one person said he is 30 to 40-years-old. Police scoured the area of the park Friday but came up empty.

The Jersey City Police Department is working with the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Special Victims Unit to search for the suspect.

Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to call the Jersey City police tipline at (201) 547-JAIL.

Your husband NEEDS to be the one to call the cops. Now that there is a story of someone doing the same thing in Mesquito Park. He can EASILY call anonymously. A childs welfare needs to be the highest priority.
