I wouldn't worry too much. There are definitely some characters on Griffith and around the park, but they are basically harmless. I say basically because some may get chatty or loud occasionally, be a little drunk, litter, or ask for fifty cents, but I can't say I've ever actually been threatened by any of the usual faces. I've also seen some catcalling, but no more than anywhere else (not that that makes it right).
Definitely be careful using the crosswalks at Griffith and New York Ave though. Cars are not fans of the stop signs there.

Fortunately, 20 is a pretty easy number to work with. Are you really worried your house is going to be reassessed for a million more dollars? Quote:

Always blame third party, right? Certainly not Al Gore's fault for failing as a candidate to inspire more votes. Or any of the millions of registered voters who didn't actually vote. They sure couldn't have changed the outcome!

I noticed the interpretative statement on the ballot literally says "The annual yearly rate would be $0.02 per $100 of assessed valuation, meaning that a property assessed at $100,000 would pay no more than $20 per year...". It must have been reading this thread.

Any idea how the intersections at Monmouth and Newark/2nd are supposed to work? As you approach 2nd going North on Monmouth, there's a left-only lane. Then there's 20 feet of another left-only lane approaching Newark Ave. I treat both left-only's as a left for Newark, because how many people are really turning on 2nd? And how ridiculous would it be for everyone taking a left on Newark to sit in a long line of people going straight only to get 20 feet of dedicated turning?

There is a Two Boots booth at the WFMU Record Fair at the Brooklyn Expo Center. Seems unfair to all those brick and mortar businesses local to Greenpoint, right?

Considering that Hoboken is not part of the system, it's less likely that people would be taking those steeper ways in/out of the Heights (Mountain Rd., Paterson Plank, Ravine) and instead make their way over to Newark Ave. Those nice bike lanes in Hoboken that run near the light rail aren't even highlighted on the map.

I find it fascinating that the rhetoric from anti-parcc testing suggests that it intentionally sets children up to fail. Then you watch the videos of those anti-parcc teachers and parents who have taken the practice tests and it's like a contest to see who can make it sound more impossible. When you have educators planting the suggestion that parcc tests are a difficult waste of time to children, that's more defeatist than the test ever could be. After witnessing several teachers and parents do this in person, I decided to try a variety of the practice tests. I did pretty well considering I haven't been in school or used a graphing calculator since the 90s. While I agree that the school year should not be monopolized by test prep, and it's a no-brainer that any test should be age-appropriate, I feel that if the test is actually covering material that is already part of the standard curriculum, then it's not an out-of-control monster that feeds on children.

But is the ability to sell a mobile meal an unfair advantage, or just a competitive advantage? Is your ability to deliver pizza an unfair advantage over another pizzeria that can't afford a delivery vehicle? Or should all brick and mortar establishments be forced to only operate from within the boundaries of their brick and mortar? Is it an unfair advantage to the food trucks that you can deliver a pizza to an apartment that is right next where they are parked? And how does Torico's manage to stay in business while ice cream trucks roam the streets without complaining to the local government?

This reminds me of how Shakespeare in the Park and other similar mobile "prepared-theatre" companies have completely destroyed any chance for Broadway and off-Broadway production to make a profit. And don't get me started on the "movies-projected-onto-a-sheet-once-a-week" juggernaut that has taken down the brick-and-mortar movie theater industry.

Going out to lunch or dinner on weekends is pretty lazy. You should be ashamed at what you're doing to your family. If you just spent a little time preparing a bag lunch with your family before going out to buy vegetables you didn't grow or clothes you didn't make, you'd be amazed at how that simple meal will be treasured for generations to come.
