Dr. Leung!

http://jclist.com/modules/newbb/viewt ... id=238409#forumpost238409

BTW, I've been to Greene Dental and left them after two visits. They are very friendly, but I thought they were too aggressive in recommending a root canal for molar pain I was having.

That pain stemmed from work they did on a cracked filling they first observed, though the crack they observed was not bothering me.

In short, I thought them too aggressive in their treatment.

By contrast, Dr. Leung had a great, straightforward, funny, and diplomatic manner. More importantly, she advocated only an aggressive treatment of NSAIDs to reduce the acute inflammation of the nerves in the afflicted tooth.

Within three weeks, I was cured!

I've seen some of the Liberty Humane Uncensored Facebook comments you're referring to... but, I think "terroristic in nature" is overstating it. They are, however, devout if not delusional in the sincerity of their cause. (I.e., "Change comes hard. This is a revolution. A movement. A philisophical disagreement that costs the lives of 5 million shelter animals a year. They need to get on the bus or get out of the way.") Honestly, David, I know I've been a bit tough on you because I thought you were being too pushy or prickly on JC List and/ or Facebook... but, this discussion has risen to a whole new level of absurdity. You, I, and others had honest disagreements, etc., but we tried to preserve a level of decorum but did not always succeed. Now... both sides (LHS & HAA v. LHS Uncensored & Pets Alive) seem to be fighting a scorched-earth war of attrition. It's so ugly, it's disgusting. As an institution, don't LHS and HAA see that they're making this worse by engaging in this discussion? It is not difficult to turn off Facebook comments and stay away from JCList. I simply do not understand why this fight continues from the institution's side. Are you able to explain this with any greater detail? I simply do not understand why LHS and HAA continue bickering with their critics.

From the real estate listing: "574 JERSEY AVE, Jersey City NJ 07302 Commercial Property for Sale for $4,500,000. This 8,000 square foot building was built on a lot size of 8000. Prime and unique investment opportunity to own & operate a successful food market in the heart of downtown Jersey City. Fantastic upside potentials to create an upscale gourmet market. Ideally located between Grove Street and Hamilton Park. Purchase Price includes the building + revenue generating business." Ok, so we're all thinking gourmet shops because it's a market. The store is even market-ed as a gourmet shop. So, I suggest: The JC Food Co-op. Fairway. A nice, Italian import market like Sal's Gourmet in Shrewsbury. However, since the price includes the building and the store, of course they could drop the store and change things entirely. So, what else can fit on 8,000 square feet other than gourmet markets? I already suggested an artsy-fartsy movie theatre. A roller-skating rink. A microbrewery/ brew-pub and restaurant, etc. A pocket park!

I don't know anything about what went inside the bar.

If by "disrespectful" you mean that other guys girlfriends were being hit on... well, that doesn't justify an attack anyway. Women are not possessions.

If women were being touched against their will, that is a different story. If the women were being abused or attacked, well that is a different story.

But, it doesn't justify cold-cocking three dudes. That's why bouncers are hired by the bar.

In any case, it's conceivable that race-relations entered the minds of the attackers.

Grand Banks attracts a large East and Southeast Asian crowd.

I've heard that the fights "started" when three Asian guys sucker-punched some white guys for hitting on "their" girls. (Asian guys are apparently angered about this problem).

So, based on those two pieces information (however reliable or true), I believe the assailant was East Asian.

This might be the first open letter or press-release since the old board resigned on July 15th. A month-and-a-half later... I think this is too late! Waaayyy too late. But, is it too little? The competing messages from angry/ disgruntled volunteers (some anonymous), self-appointed watchdogs (JCList and Facebookers), related humane organizations (HAA, for example), and nouveau rival humane societies (Pets Alive) have dictated the acidic tone of the conversation. Many from the above groups have called for greater transparency and communication; I have as well. In the interim, David Norman and others from the HAA have provided both useful information and "fodder" for critics... perhaps unintentionally enflaming their trollesque passions. Also, Pets Alive responded at length to a Jersey Journal article which they thought unfairly portrayed their interactions with LHS. They've also created a lengthy blog post. (Both are reposted a few entries ago also). So, here we have it. Something official. Just in time for it to be churned under by the swells of Labor Day Weekend. Or, does it have enough buoyancy to float atop the waters swirling around it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Open Letter from the Liberty Humane Society Board of Directors Aug. 31, 2010 http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... ciety-board-of-directors/ Supporters of Liberty Humane Society, So many of you have dedicated your time and energy to the animals at Liberty Humane Society over the past months and years and without your support we would have a city pound where the outlook of the animals would be bleak. Due to your efforts, literally tens of thousands of animals over the past six years have found refuge from the streets; a safe place to lay their heads, heal from their wounds, and find their forever home. Many of you have worked alongside us during good times and some not so good times. Together, we built Liberty Humane Society (LHS). There really aren?t words to express the thanks you deserve or the gratitude we feel. Obviously you are aware that in the past six weeks there have been many changes at the shelter. The interim board and paid staff, as well as long time volunteers, have had the overwhelming job of keeping the organization from complete collapse. In this time we have eased the suffering of many animals that were being inhumanely housed. Sick animals are now provided with the medical care they deserve and the spread of disease is slowing. While we have brought the shelter back up to or close to state standards, we believe the animals we care for deserve a higher standard than the basic minimum that the state mandates. LHS is committed to providing them with the highest degree of care possible. We have managed to adopt, or transfer to rescue a record number of dogs and cats in a matter of weeks. The staff work incredibly hard and rarely complain. They are amazing. Despite these efforts, there have been great misunderstandings. As a board we apologize if we have not always been able to reach out and respond to the questions being asked of us every day. You have been left to wonder about things that haven?t been explained. That is not okay. We were given a very, very short deadline to ease the overcrowding which led to inhumane conditions and that has been our main focus. Our time has been spent and will continue to be focused foremost on the well-being of the animals in our care, working extensively with all the reputable animal advocates and rescue organizations that have come to our aid during this crisis. Current Challenges We Still Face We had our re-inspection by the state this past week and many of the most serious violations dating back to last November have been rectified. While the accommodations for the animals are not completely up to where we want them to be, they have vastly improved. Our Vet, Dr. Bloom, has done an incredible job setting up protocol for all the animals so that they are properly medicated and evaluated. One huge challenge we face is that the State has told us that none of the cages we have are large enough for dogs over 45 pounds. A major challenge we face is that last year, the state changed the regulations on minimum size requirements for dogs over 45 lbs. That left LHS in a position where we needed to obtain larger runs for our dogs. Thanks to a grant awarded by the ASPCA to purchase some larger runs, and Mason Kennels for providing us runs at a deep discount or even donated, we are well on our way to meeting those new requirements. Rumors We know you may have concerns over some rumors that have been circulated. LHS would like to take this opportunity to address some of those false and slanderous statements. First off, we have not euthanized animals purely to make room for other animals nor do we intend to do so. We have also not refused to release any adoptable animal to any trustworthy rescue, foster home, or adopter. In fact, 60 dogs were adopted, rescued, or placed in foster homes in just three weeks. During this time period it is true that we have had to euthanize some animals. The sad reality of animal sheltering is that not all animals are adoptable. It came to our attention when we stepped in that in an effort to avoid euthanizing, dangerous and aggressive dogs were removed from public view while adoptable dogs were placed in smaller and smaller cages to make room. This led to overcrowding, suffering, and the stockpiling of dangerous dogs. It also meant that we had to contend with a large number of dangerous dogs ? dogs that could not be safely placed in a home ? all at once. The choice we faced was to either release these dogs on an unsuspecting public and hope no one or no animal was hurt or attacked or to humanely euthanize the dogs. That is an awful choice for anyone who loves animals to have to make. In the end, 26 dogs deemed to be too dangerous to be placed into our community, were put to sleep. That is heartbreaking. Not only to you, but to our staff and everyone on the board as well. Evaluations To determine whether a dog is adoptable or not, we asked two outside agencies with nationally recognized expert trainers to assist us in performing behavioral evaluations on the dogs. These evaluations have been the source of rumor, innuendo, and blatantly false statements. Who did the evaluations; how those evaluations have been interpreted; what they said about what dog; allegations that dogs passed, but were euthanized anyway. We can?t blame you for being confused after everything that?s been said. Our critics have completely distorted the truth and we?ve watched in horror as the rumors get worse and worse, the allegations get more and more grotesque, and the personal attacks get more and more vicious. How You Can Help As animal lovers, we can understand your concern over what you may have heard, but we want to assure you that LHS stands by our staff, our decisions and our practices. We will not allow these vicious attacks to distract us from our mission and we need your help. As a friend of LHS, we ask that you stand by us and continue your support. We want to show everyone the challenges we are facing and how we are overcoming those obstacles by opening our doors to the media. In the coming days and weeks, our Acting Director, Nicole Dawson, will be setting up interviews with the media and giving tours of the facility in order to dispel some of the myths being circulated. The truth will soon be revealed that LHS is dedicating to protecting the animals and people of our community. Sincerely, Board of Directors Liberty Humane Society

New Hearing on Steve Hyman?s Applications to Tear Down the Embankment Set for Wednesday

THE DETAILS
Special meeting of the Jersey City Zoning Board of Adjustment; Wednesday, September 1 at 6 pm; City Hall?s Council Chambers, 280 Grove St. (2nd Floor).

http://www.jerseycityindependent.com/ ... nkment-set-for-wednesday/

In June, Superior Court Judge Maurice Gallipoli ruled that developer Steve Hyman was entitled to a new hearing before the city?s Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) regarding his petition to tear down the 6th Street Embankment. The ZBA has scheduled a special meeting to hear the case Wednesday evening.

Hyman?s initial applications for Certificates of Appropriateness and Certificates of Economic Hardship related to his application to demolish the elevated former rail line were denied by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) last spring. Hyman appealed those decisions to the city?s ZBA, which denied his appeals last August. Hyman then filed suit, arguing that he deserved a fresh hearing on his applications, and that he should have been allowed to present his evidence and state his case before the ZBA ? an argument Gallipoli agreed with.

?The ZBA was required to determine the case ?completely anew? and, while giving due deference to the findings and conclusions of the HPC, it was not necessarily to be controlled by them,? Gallipoli wrote.

This week?s hearing comes as Hyman maintains he has no interest in selling the Embankment properties to the city, despite the City Council?s July vote approving about $7.6 million in bonds to acquire the contested land.

For those of you who are still paying attention, the Liberty Humane Society is now in a battle with a "no kill" group called "Pets Alive" through their Facebook page. Quite publicly, in fact. If you have a stake or a viewpoint on that discussion, you should probably take a look.

On DOGS JC (or maybe the discussion does not occur there anymore), JCList.com, and now Facebook.com... the mostly-irrational pissing-contest discussion continues and LHS's credibility suffers. Wow.

It's bewildering, confusing, and frustrating to see this happen. But, it is an entertaining soap-opera drama as well.

Maybe the scales aren't calibrated.

This may be true and intentional and important (per Karate Kid Part II) or not true and not intentional and not important (per Jesus Christ Superstar).

In either case (and in both movies) a true hero-san holy-son is ethically-driven or clumsily-gifted toward flipping the script and flipping the scales, thus chasing justice by exposing injustice.

So, this is your moment, Jim-San! You can be a hero-messiah to all of us.

Or, ask them to weigh a pound of butter for you and see if the scale is pared and true.

If it is, climb up on the cross and commit seppuku. The shame will be too great to go on otherwise.

I agree with the fireman.

Trees stand in the way of progress, because progress is measured in new construction and ratables. And since property taxes don't grow on trees... down they come.

Unless those babies are getting replaced... it's a bit short-sighted.

And, yes, it's coffee time.

I thought this article from Riverdale and Butler would illuminate the problem with having too many police on the force: the pendulum won't swing in the opposite direction... so, it's not a pendulum even when other budgets are. Throw in some police activists to stir the fear-mongering pot, and the result is obvious. "The mayor explained that Riverdale was approached by Butler to look into the idea, and he considered it worthy of exploration when an annual savings of about $650,000 was mentioned. ... The mayor told the crowd its Police Department could be mandated to merge because Riverdale does not meet the standards to qualify for its own police force as defined by the FBI. Budesheim explained that a police department must have at least 2.7 officers per 1,000 residents, and it can have no less than 11 members on the force. Riverdale has an 18-member force with a population of 2,498, according to the 2000 census, meaning it has seven more officers than FBI standards dictate. Residents expressed a variety of reasons why a merger would be a bad idea. One common theme was that they really liked their police force and they did not want to have their services taken away from them." --------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, August 18, 2010 Riverdale residents tell mayor and council to leave their police force alone By Leslie Scott (Suburban Trends) http://www.northjersey.com/news/morri ... _police_departments_.html Mayor William Budesheim got an earful of "no?s" and "how could you?" during the Aug. 16 Borough Council meeting. Residents filled Borough Hall to tell the Riverdale Borough Council that no one wants to merge their police force with neighboring Butler?s Police Department. Residents filled the council chambers to capacity after hearing news that the governing body would entertain a study to merge Riverdale?s Police Department with that of neighboring Butler?s. Protests brought the proposal to a grinding halt that evening. Borough residents, as well as the entire Riverdale Police Department?s personnel, expressed complete disapproval of a merger. That evening, the council was expected to discuss a feasibility study of the merger and agree to look further into the proposal. By the end of the discussion, however, the council members voted to pursue the proposal no further. The mayor explained that Riverdale was approached by Butler to look into the idea, and he considered it worthy of exploration when an annual savings of about $650,000 was mentioned. Budesheim added that he was also told there is a possibility that Riverdale?s Police Department could be mandated to merge if the state Local Unit Alignment, Reorganization and Consolidation Commission (LUARC) determines it to be necessary. LUARC was formed in 2007 to encourage more efficient government and recommend changes that could include administrative streamlining of government functions. These changes could include the transfer of functions from one level of government to another or the establishment of regional services. One common theme was that they really liked their police force and they did not want to have their services taken away from them. The proposed new police department would have been shared equally between the two towns. Borough resident Daniel Sciarra questioned how the merged police force could be shared equally shared when Butler has a much larger population than Riverdale. (According to the 2000 census, Butler has 7,420 residents.) The borough?s Police Benevolence Association (PBA) released a three-page statement detailing why it was against the merger. It cited disapproval of how the police chief would be selected, discrepancies in the benefits currently offered to both departments, and questions about how the new department would handle both towns. "Currently, Riverdale has a minimum of two patrol cars covering Riverdale at all times. You told us last week that this will not change with the merger. This new 27-man department will not allow this to remain. It will have a minimum staffing of three patrol cars on the road to cover both Riverdale and Butler, thus leaving patrol coverage in Riverdale short," the statement explained. PBA President Patrolman Pat Harden said even if the merger was mandated, Butler?s Police Department would be the last one that they would want to merge with. "I don?t even think you as a governing body should be entertaining this," said borough resident Marybeth Miller. "We don?t need this. We don?t want this. This doesn?t make any sense." Although the mayor was interested in studying the merger proposal, he did say he was against the idea. Residents questioned how he could be truly against a merger if he defended the study. Councilwoman Elaine Wetzel explained that the council would like to find out more information about a merger before coming to any conclusion. Councilman Garrett Astarita said looking into the proposal would be proactive. Yet ultimately, the council did drop the proposal. Afterward, Riverdale Police Chief Tom Soules expressed relief and said that he appreciated the residents that came out in support of the Riverdale Police Department.

The idea of volunteering at LHS is unattractive to me right now PRECISELY because reasonable discussion becomes so quickly vitriolic, and I am risk-averse to working with hotheaded people.

Anyone pushing the volunteer angle at LHS really has to look at this objectively: why would I volunteer with an organization so obviously in disarray? When the Titanic is sinking, you don't climb on board.

Therese:

I'm glad to see McNair is producing graduates with such passion.

I read the blog when I posted, and I read it again since. I am also pleased that you noted McNair's great success there as well:

Quote:
Some last statistics for you: in each graduating class, 99% of the students go to college, 100% of students pass the HSPA examination required of all juniors, and SAT scores consistently exceed the national average.

It's undeniable: McNair is a great school.

As your blog post demonstrates, you have ample skills in technology and computing, reasoning, argument, civility, etc. Your blog also shows you are going to Cornell. I wish you many congratulations on your success. I also congratulate you for posting under your own name and identity. This website is peopled by too many anonymous, sniping bozos.

However, I will say definitively that your read of my post is incorrect. I feel neither bitterness nor hostility towards McNair or any public school. I feel plenty cool and civil in saying so. I am not proposing a philosophy about how best to burn money. I am simply countering the "need" for McNair to succeed in the Kohl's contest, when it clearly succeeds without it.

Put simply, the resource/ material problems you describe at McNair are neither surprising nor special. Every school, and especially urban schools, suffer with that burden. Unfortunately, belt-tightening has resulted in proposed cuts for academic and extracurricular programs nationwide. Again, McNair does not stand out in that way. Teacher-layoffs are hitting school budgets statewide in NJ. This should not come as a surprise, because it has been in the news.

As to the contest, if you see the leaderboard ( http://apps.facebook.com/KohlsCares/home/leaderboard ), McNair currently has about 5000 votes on the contest. It is the only JC school which could even come close to winning. (Oddly, it's 42nd in the nation on that list as well.) Ferris and Lincoln have 11.

The problem is obvious: the contest rewards schools which have connected, internet-savvy graduates (such as McNair, etc). It does this because Kohls has an interest in attracting and data-mining such web-savvy alumni and their connections.

If you look at the leading schools, I suspect you will find the least-deserving.
