Willard Furniture & Cover Company, located at 340 Grove Street, is closing its doors after many years of serving the DTJC community. Not sure if/where it will relocate.
Sad to hear this news.

Chama, sincere thanks for sharing these photos! Unfortunately we could not attend this year, but my family and I enjoyed the fantastic shots that you posted. We are already looking forward to next year's parade!
This parade is truly a gem in JC, how I wish our city's cultural affairs dept would do a better job of promoting it.

Great news about the upcoming Roky Ericsson show.

Oh, that Richie Havens was still around to play some gigs at WEH. What an amazing "local band" night that would have been.

Marco & Pepe Sold

Just can't stay away

Marco & Pepe was closed today. Apparently, it was officially sold to a new owner just this afternoon, who has stated that the plan is to reopen and keep the restaurant very similar in style and menu. The hope is to open as soon as possible, as they navigate (of course) through the city's various inspections/approvals/etc.

I'd heard a rumor that the owner was considering selling but had no idea how advanced the timing of the actual sale was.

I highly recommend Mansour Partners on York Street near Exchange Place. I had a very similar situation that involved 6 years of corrective tax work that was required on behalf of one of my parents, and Tim Mansour (the principal of the firm) and his team did a stellar job of straightening things out for me. Good luck!

BRAVO NIMBUS!!!
+1 in congratulating Samuel Pott and his wonderful Nimbus Dance Works on this recognition.
The company is a local TREASURE here in JC.
If anyone who reads this has never seen a Nimbus performance, then I highly recommend you attend one at the next opportunity. You will be thrilled that you did!

A friend and I stopped in for lunch today (the first visit for me) and it was TERRIFIC!

Had carrot ginger soup and the burekas, both delicious!

I hope it was only an anomaly (since it's shortly before the holidays and folks are trying to save money), but we were the only customers in there during the time that we dined :(

I HIGHLY recommend this restaurant, this is truly a gem, the owner and the staff are lovely, the food is wonderful, healthy and fresh, it deserves our support!

I'll chime in here and recommend All Wrapped Up. Jason and Jill (the owners) have moved us THREE times, and each time they were stellar! Their pricing is competitive, their crew is conscientious and they work quickly and efficiently. The second time we moved we had them help to pack up our stuff (we learned the value of this after trying to do so ourselves during our first move) and it was worth every penny to have that sort of expertise to help everything go smoothly. Good luck!

+1+1+1...NO ONE should have to endure the unapologetically unprofessional way that Mr. Cruz behaves in the workplace. I sincerely hope that justice is served here.

People are all entitled to their opinions about Mr. Wrieden, but he is not, in my educated opinion, an unethical person who would waste his or anyone else's time with a bogus lawsuit.

The role of Historic Preservation Officer is a very difficult job in this city of competing and conflicting interests. God bless him for hanging in there despite all of this adversity.

Re: Jersey City writer hates new Shepard Fairey mural

IMH(Unsolicited)O:
In the early morning and late afternoon, seeing the sunlight hit the wall of the building where this latest mural is located was a simply lovely sight, especially on days when the sky was brilliantly blue. The sun's low, slanting rays made the wall "glow" against this azure backdrop and it was beautiful to behold, even though it was "only" a simple brick wall. But that was part of the wonder of it--the light made the plain wall a thing of beauty. Being someone who prefers to live in an urban environment, I truly like looking at old brick walls/buildings. They are symbols of the age and history of a place, put there and maintained by workmen's hands so many years ago. I also love art, and I do like the mural that this artist did over by the tunnel. But I feel like the Grove Path Plaza mural is out of sync with that space. It feels predatory, and, at least for me, it has in fact drowned out/trampled the beauty of the former plain-old brick wall, especially when that low-angled sunlight would hit it just so.

Re: Dress alterations in downtown JC?

If you are looking for a classically trained dressmaker, try Jennifer Fein. It was a challenge for me to have certain types of alterations done that were a bit more complex than a standard hem on a pair of pants, and Jennifer is the real deal. If you are a man, there is nothing like finding the right tailor--for women, a dressmaker can make all the difference between an "OK" fit and a fabulous one, whether it's for a formal event or everyday business attire.
You can reach her at fein.showroom@gmail.com.
Good luck!

It is my understanding that Poltmax also works with commercial clients.

Again, I had a great experience with this outfit, and I share this info here simply because I know firsthand how awful working with unethical/greedy engineers/contractors can be on such projects. My motivation is that the "good guys" can get some new biz from testimonials like mine as opposed to the not-so-good guys.

We have renovated three historic homes (two in NJ, one in FL) and the experience I had with Poltmax far surpassed the others in terms of ethics and quality of work. I absolutely understand that some folks might be concerned about the engineer and contractor being from the same firm but I have no qualms after working with this team and plan to have them do some work at my parents' home next.

Good luck!

I highly recommend Maria Sumba. I started working with her group after my c-section and (six years later) haven't found a reason not to work with her TERRIFIC team :)
Anyone I have ever recommended her to is always thrilled and astounded with the cleaning work compared with other people they may have used previously.

Call Poltmax.
They have been working in downtown JC for about 20 years and just completed a MAJOR structural job on a large house a few doors down from us. They came recommended by many folks in my area for a job at our house and we are very happy with the work they did (and they also had to deal with Historic Preservation office for our job).
They are fully licensed and insured and very familiar with how to properly navigate the JC Buildings Dept. The owners are Ziggie and Rafa (and a third partner whose names escapes me now but who is a structural engineer) and they can be reached at: 570-242-3083
Good luck!
