Took the Harborside ferry to WFC for the first time this morning. Arrived at the dock at 8.40am and just missed one departing; it returned at 8.49. They are cross-honoring Paulus Hook tickets.
Only 6 passengers boarded. It was a stunning morning for it. Sat up on the deck in the sunshine listening to music with no one around me. It was sheer bliss compared to the PATH every-man-for-himself hellscape at Grove Street. Arrived at work in a good mood for the first time in a long time. Although not cheap (10 tickets that can be used anytime on weekdays for $56.50) I think its manageable if combined with talking the PATH home. The evening commute back from WTC is far less unpleasant than the AM free-for-all. Probably less of an option during the winter snows and rain, but as of right now, I think I am sold.

I've no dog in the fight either way, but when even humble Newark is trying to get in on the action, just makes me think that the situation may be heading for something of a tipping point.

A gentrification story on WNYC today caught my attention - about Baraka's plans to revitalize the Ironbound with a new Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble and a high-line inspired park.
Aside from being the paint-by-numbers report on how new investment brings in more affluent residents at the cost of pushing out poorer existing residents that we've all read a hundred times before, the piece does not mention the changes and new construction taking place further down the PATH toward Manhattan. I think it is nuts that a building like The Morgan on Marin Blvd is asking up to $2,500 for a studio apartment, but when I hear a loft in downtown Newark is asking $2,000, suddenly its not DTJC that seems so absurd, but the entire rental situation throughout the NYC metro area...

I think our "activist" is back on the anti-gentrification warpath.
Today Curbed featured a bland profile of (mostly downtown) JC's best-kept secrets offered up by a Barcade employee who has lived in town for three years. It's much the same as several other puff pieces in recent years selling the merits of DTJC to the Curbed readership on the other side of the river - certainly nothing offensive in her observations. Nonetheless, scroll on down to the comment section and take a read of the screed written by "RealJCNative1". Reads like the shrill ranting of the "JC Take it Back" girl that started this thread a few years back. And of course, she's still furious about the "colonizers" taking over her town. Yawn.

One of our windows is cracked right across the pane from one side to the other. Need to get it repaired - anyone have any decent local recommendations?
Also, what is the protocol with a single pane of glass that needs to be replaced? This is a standard double-glazed window that can be popped out of the window frame for cleaning. Should I bring the window to the glazier's shop to have it repaired, or does he come to you? Would seem easier to just bring it to him and have it repaired/replaced there and then in his shop. Thanks in advance!

My wife got up at 6am to vote this morning. She wandered across the street to the Cordero school polling station to find 18 people in line to vote at 6.25am.
When she reached the front of the line she discovered why: there is one single voting booth. Not a gym full of lines of voting booths, but a solitary stall situated in a hallway. That one booth is supposed to allow how many people to vote? WTF Jersey City?

The Churchill on 28th and Park Ave always shows the UK elections and more recently the Brexit referendum with sound across both floors of the pub. They always pull in a big crowd. I'm sure they'll be doing the same for Trumpageddon 2016.
Did you check in with White Star on Monmouth Streeet? They are usually pretry obliging when you ask them to put on a game with sound.

SRhia - you have to cut into the ceiling to properly diagnose the problem. We had similar issue in our apartment - top floor of 4th floor walk up, directly exposed to the roof.
Bought it three years ago, were warned that there had been leaks "years ago" but were assured they had been fixed. That was BS. Two years of minor leaks - but only during sustained very heavy prolonged rain (in excess of two hours) - we got a roofer out he sprayed the roof with a hose for an hour to find a hole, but no joy. This summer after another leak in the same place, we get a roofer in and tell him to cut into our ceiling to find out what is going on in their. He cuts it open to discover that there is a clearly visible hole (visible from the inside with the light coming through, invisible from the outside on the roof). Even worse, we discover that in a previous "repair" someone had placed a foil Thanksgiving turkey tray up there to collect water. Rather than patching the hole, they just stuck a turkey tray up there to collect water coming in. That was why in normal rain - or even heavy rain of less than 2hrs - no leak, because the tray caught it. More than 2 hours and the tray overflowed and spilled onto the plaster and came through the ceiling. The only way to fix your problem is to cut into the ceiling, find out exactly what is going on in there and get a professional patch/repair conducted. Best to wait for a recent leak to ensure there will be damp to follow to the source. Just be sure that your guy will replaster your ceiling afterward. We have heard some horror stories!

If you were renting an apartment for pennies downtown for decades and now you're getting forced out because you never bothered to buy a place when you could have picked up a row house for $150,000 in 1990, I have little sympathy. Gentrification is a zero sum game: homeowners win, renters lose. The only way to protect yourself is to buy your home.

Always sad to see a local watering hole close, but always found 9C to be a little bit of a strange spot:
- Only one or two small TVs in there, so not really a place to watch a game - Food was decent bar fare and inexpensive, but nothing amazing. Hamilton Inn food is way better and White Star is also superior - Drink selection was limited for a beer drinker, Sam Adams and Shock Top was as adventurous as the draft selection got. Anything hoppy like a Dogfish had to come out of a bottle. In their defense, they did pour Guinness in a proper imperial pint, though quality of their pint was inconsistent - some days good some days bad - The outdoor seating was nice, but there was often one or more people smoking out there, which immediately stops me from wanting to order food. Also, often a loud trashy crowd sitting out there, so we would pass right on by - Service was always really uneven. Often just one person behind the bar and one person waiting tables, but you'd still be waiting two-three minutes for service even on a quiet day - Kind of cramped so you couldn't really go there with more than a party of four. The small space also meant you never knew whether you would be having a quiet drink on a weekend afternoon, or whether the place would be packed. I frequented 9C quite regularly for about six months after moving to HP but I gradually stopped by less and less. Now I can't remember the last time I stopped in there. Best of luck to the owners. Hope someone else can be tempted to make a go of it. It could be a really cute neighborhood spot in the right hands.

This apparent incompetence/indifference is SO infuriating! If nothing else, these unending weekend PATH closures will likely slow down the tide of NYC refugees washing up in DTJC only to push up those constitutionally-protected cheap rents and steal those God-given on-street parking spots....

For the past 4-6 weeks trains on the NWK-WTC line have been randomly showing up during both the morning and evening rush hour missing one or two cars.
The commuters spread themselves along the platform in anticipation of the usual 10-car service only to have an 8 or 9 car train pull in, causing a sudden stampede up the platform to cram themselves into the last car. This has happened on my commute about a dozen times or so over the last month, with no apparent rhyme or reason to which trains come with a full complement of 10 cars and which come with only 8 or 9. it's very frustrating for those of us who board at the rear of the trains. Anyone know why this is happening now? I've never encountered this on the WTC line in all the years I've been riding the PATH until this summer.
