Re: Question about Dixon Mills
#1
Home away from home
Home away from home

I live in Dixon Mills, been here over 5 years. It's overall a fine place to live as the location is great and the building quality is good for an old building. However, the financial mismanagement by the Board has been so bad I could not advise anyone to buy here now. In fact, I know of multiple residents looking into legal action against the Board for their financial mismanagement.

For context- the condo fees are offensively high (e.g. ~$900/month for 1,000 sq ft apartment) and the Board institutes a "special assessment" EVERY SINGLE YEAR on top of that. Thus, if you live on any sort of budget, this is not a place to buy. We have a Board president who has held the position the whole time I've been here, who along with the other Board members is very wealthy. They spend resident money with ease and it is an assumption that every year they will raise condo fees and require a new special assessment. We are also in never-ending litigation with the developer. So stay away for now IMO until the Board leadership turns over.

I was standing by the benches outside the Archer from about 10 pm to 2 am last night and it was pretty tame. There were always drunk idiots but at least now it's not the pedestrian hell that existed before. I kept seeing the same officers walking the block which likely deterred crappy behavior. Hopefully this expands further!

James Solomon for Ward E Council
20 hrs ?

Thank you. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Ward E for honoring me with the opportunity to serve as your councilperson. My commitments to you are these: I will work extraordinarily hard to make development work for you. I will work extraordinarily hard to make our day-to-day government work for you. I will stand up for progressive values. And I will partner with those in power without being beholden to them.

For those who voted for another candidate on Nov. 7th or Dec. 5th, you have my commitment to do everything to earn your trust over the coming months and years.

We live in an incredible community. I'm blessed to raise my family here. Let's work together to ensure downtown remains a community for everyone.

That's a positive start. Curious to see if he votes based on the values of his Healy/Matsikoudis diehards (many of whom don't live in Ward E) or if he looks to his actual constituency. FWIW, 83% of Ward E voted for Mayor Fulop last month.

Mayor Fulop received 83% of the vote in Ward E. Not knowing the exact history that seems like a pretty big vote margin historically.

For this runoff, it is known that many Fulop supporters voted for James, while many Fulop critics supported Rebecca.

I cannot vote in Ward E but find the continued smear campaign by Solomon's followers interesting. It is not surprising from some of his followers who come from the Healy/Matsikoudis camp, but if he is such a great ideas guy, why is there a constant negative fear-mongering attack from his supporters? Why not speak to the things Symes (who seems to be a very accomplished woman) actually says?

If I didn't know any better, I'd believe Symes is a sith lord ready to turn Ward E into Mordor. Time will tell if the Trump-like tactic of fear and hate will win...

While negative campaigning does work sometimes (see: Trump supporters) I do find it deters those who actually vote based on policy. While I can't vote in E, I liked this Solomon guy until he went negative. I know others in Ward E who similarly were deterred by him for this same reason.

Well yes, he is a Healy guy. Dan had multiple failed runs at office while he saw Mayor Fulop win both seats he coveted (Council, then Mayor). He then made a deal with the devil and joined Drunk Jerry (amazing video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEjetFzyYgo), and has since been a lighter version of Yvonne, obsessed with Mayor Fulop and pretty much opposed to anything he does. Mayor Fulop could cure cancer and Levin would be against it.

Because you asked, here's the first graph of Matsikoudis' bio on his site:

"Bill Matsikoudis has dedicated twelve years of his career to public service, including nearly nine years as Jersey City?s chief attorney. Bill has deep ties to and a deep love for Jersey City, and that is why he is running for Mayor."

No mention of Healy there. Later in the 5th paragraph he mentions Healy. He, strangely, does not mention that members of the Healy Administration ended up in Federal Prison.

Thanks, this is unfortunately not surprising. If Mayor Fulop has been warm to developers, Healy treated them like royalty- and this lawyer was the person who signed off on all those sweetheart deals.

Matsukidis' supporters scarily remind me of Trump supporters, in that they are supporting based on negative campaigning, fear of "new people" or "outsiders," and completely ignoring past transgressions as their hate is so strong.

I have admittedly not navigated to the site, but in the same topic wonder this:

Does he own his time as the chief strategist/advisor/lawyer for the former Mayor Healy? Many of his positions now are conveniently at complete odds with what transpired during the 9+ years of the Healy regime.

How does Billy boy justify his tenure as the chief legal advisor and confidant to Healy? Was he advising Healy for all 10 years where we saw almost a 100% raise in city taxes? The Healy record is pitiful and I just cannot grasp how he can say he isn't responsible as chief counsel to the mayor.

Food and drinks will be provided to those attending
RSVP and Email questions to: info@mats4mayor.com

The open community forums will showcase a series of key components of the Matsikoudis campaign, including Community Policing, Affordable Housing, Jobs Creation and will help to create a policy-driven dialog with members of the community.

?In these next few weeks leading to Election Day, my grassroots campaign for Mayor continues to focus on having honest policy conversations and making sure every community voice is heard,? stated Matsikoudis.

?Like all elections, this will be a simple choice in leadership. Jersey City can continue to be represented by a man who will say, do, and spend whatever it takes to be re-elected, or we can use this moment to rethink and recapture the true spirit of the city with new leadership and a fresh approach to finding solutions. I have a real plan to represent every member of the Jersey City community. Wednesday, September 27th, 7:00 pm
The Heights - 2nd Reformed Church
940 Summit Avenue

Saturday, October 7th, 10:00 am
Greenville - Moose Lodge
60 West Side Ave

Wow, this alone justifies bringing back Rascal's so Billy M can perform! This line is the best- "recapture the true spirit of the city with new leadership and a fresh approach to finding solutions."

Knowing that this guy was the legal counsel to Healy and advised on the myriad of horrific deals he made (and a close confidant to the three (?) imprisoned administration members) makes this just too good. Bravo on the comedic gold Bill, would love to at least see you do some standup soon!

I would say ?JC was not willing to pay for his food? is a fairly inaccurate reason for why they closed. Having been a regular at their Dullboy location, I stopped going nearly 2 years ago as the service was consistently horrific. The person who I believe was the GM (always wore a baseball hat) seemed like she generally never gave a crap about how her staff acted. After being treated like crap many times by the staff we simply said enough is enough and never went back. I know several people who stopped going for the same reason. It doesn?t matter how good your food is (and I generally loved theirs), if the staff sucks, there are more than enough places to eat around here.

There are a few real-life impacts from this I can immediately think of:

1. Prevents new puppy mill stores from opening up in JC. As development expands greatly throughout the city, it is not inconceivable that a puppy mill store would have opened. Now they won't.

2. As more municipalities adopt laws like this, soon the state will have a majority of municipalities with the same law, at which point the statewide effort starts to gain momentum. There are about 100 towns now with similar ordinances, and if not for Gov Christie a comparable state law would have been signed already. This then prevents puppy mill sales statewide which is a huge achievement.

3. Cosmetically/topically, it's good press. Maybe someone didn't know what a puppy mill is, but then they see Jersey City has banned their sales, and in turn they end up rescuing a dog.

I don't discount the possibility you are right, particularly about #3 (increasing awareness, and perhaps deriving some other benefits as a result of that) but with regards to #2, my impression has always been that most of the puppy mills from which animals originate were usually found in PA (that was until some state laws curtailed those operations) and from OH and some Southern states (KY, TN).

In any case, I am now genuinely curious as to whether we even have pet stores in town that sell dogs, or cats.

I remember there being a place not Downtown that did years ago but thinking they went out of business. Thankfully if this passes we know no new ones will open though.

You are right about where the really bad mills are. Also Missouri is notorious for puppy mills. One issue is that the mills now use "brokers" who will be local to the store and act as middle person.

This does obviously still leave those determined to purchase a certain brand of dog the option of a backyard breeder, but at least it narrows their options a bit.

your intentions are clearly in the right place but this is unfortunately very separated from reality and how the music industry works. there is a reason the FOL have one, maybe two concerts a year at the Loew's, and if they retain control it will never become what it once was. as I mentioned previously, there is a reason nearly every single legitimate venue is run by a company who has the experience doing so. AEG Live and comparable companies have a track record of renovating historic theaters and turning them into premier event spaces. they have the capital to do the renovation and the connections to book the ongoing talent needed to keep it running. if the FOL were remotely capable of doing so they would have already.
