The incident started with the fatal shooting of a police officer at a cemetery before the two assailants, a man and a woman who were suspects in a homicide, holed up in the market, engaging police in a lengthy gun battle.

The shooters also killed Moshe Deutsch, 24; Miguel Douglas, 49; and Joe Seals, a Jersey City police detective. The shooters, identified as David Anderson and Francine Graham, were found dead in the store.

Now the Jewish community of Jersey City, and their friends and family in New York, are reeling and wondering what comes next.

Many had moved from Brooklyn to escape the borough?s high prices and had found a welcoming new home. It wasn?t a danger zone, they said. They got along with their neighbors and did not experience the anti-Semitic vandalism, harassment and assaults that have taken place recently in Brooklyn?s Hasidic neighborhoods.

?There have never been any attacks or incidents with the Jews who lived there,? said Rabbi Avi Schnall, the New Jersey director for Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox organization. Schnall has worked with Jews and other local leaders in Greenville on building bridges with the neighborhood?s communities.

Schnall drew a link between Tuesday?s shooting and the killings at synagogues in Poway, California, in April, and in Pittsburgh a little more than a year ago.

?It?s beyond tragic,? Schnall said. ?It?s frightening. What?s more frightening is this is not a local issue. This is taking place in three places throughout the country in the past year, that people are being gunned down.?

Officials say it remains unclear whether the attack was motivated by anti-Semitism. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted Wednesday morning that ?it has now become clear from the cameras that these two individuals targeted the Kosher grocery location.? But officials at a news conference later in the day repeatedly stressed that they could not definitively say what motivated the shooters.

?We know there is significant speculation about the shooters? motive,? said New Jersey Attorney General Gubrir Grewal. ?We are not in the position at this time to say definitively why the suspect decided to stop in front of the supermarket and begin firing immediately.?

Less than a day after the shooting, JC Kosher is already rebuilding.

On Wednesday, a plywood frame stood in front of the store entrance near a truck carrying what looked like drywall. Men from a company called Gold Star Restoration were hammering away. Inside, boxes of children?s candy, cereal and croutons lined the shelves. A group of Orthodox men were carrying a shiny new door to the building. Construction paused only for a prayer service at the adjacent synagogue, K?hal Adas Greenville, with New Jersey Gov. Chris Murphy in attendance.

The grocery store is on Martin Luther King Drive, one of the neighborhood?s central thoroughfares. Down the street is a Pentecostal church, a mosque and a string of businesses. The surrounding blocks are full of row houses in a rainbow of colors along with some empty lots. Broken bottles and litter line the streets.

Jersey City residents say the area has been gentrifying, with a boom in new construction in the past few years. Douglas Harmon, 43, a lifetime Greenville resident and local building contractor, said most of the new arrivals are Jewish families.

WOODLAND, N.J. ? New Jersey has become the second state in the nation after California to adopt a law that requires schools to teach about LGBT history in a move hailed by civil rights groups as a step toward inclusion and fairness.

Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat who promised to promote equality for gay and transgender people during his campaign, signed the bill Thursday. Among those celebrating the news was Jaime Bruesehoff of Vernon, whose 12-year-old transgender child, Rebekah, spoke in support of the bill in Trenton in December.

?This bill is so important for our young people,? Bruesehoff said. ?They need to see examples of themselves in the history being taught and in classes they are going to each day. We know representation matters.

An NJ Spotlight forum put the spotlight on the quest to make progress on the decadeslong battle of building affordable housing in the Garden State.

?The very premise for the original Mt. Laurel litigation and the doctrine to move poor people out of the poverty-stricken urban areas and into the suburbs has literally been turned upside down,? said Peter Reinhart, director of the Kislak Real Estate Institute at Monmouth University.

Reinhart says Generation X and millennials? appetite for city life and access to mass transportation have removed places such as Jersey City from the ?poor-city? list when the Mount Laurel lawsuit began five decades ago. There were some unintended consequences.

?There?s now this system of displacement happening as a result of gentrification where now a place in Jersey City like Greenville where the rent was $700 a month 10 years ago. The rent is now $2,000 a month,? said Housing and Community Development Network Board Chairman John Restrepo.

Hudson County heavyweights Hoboken and Downtown Jersey City have historically led the marketplace but haven?t seen any significant rise in property appreciation for some time, and that reality could be what?s driving a shift toward more rentals closing in the waterfront neighborhoods.

The latest market report from Pure Properties shows that homeowners in Downtown Jersey City haven?t witnessed much of a change in their values year-on-year, with the average sale price of a 1-4 family home retreating 1% to $1.416 million during this year?s first quarter. However, that might be somewhat welcome news after the real estate conversation last year focused around a citywide revaluation that walloped Downtown homeowners particularly hard.

The calendar change to 2019 marked one year since new tax assessments were issued and home price volatility has certainly been less pronounced than anticipated. In terms of 2019?s first quarter, sale prices for 1-4 family homes actually rose 9% from Q4 of 2018, while condo sales settled in at $700,000, a 3% dip both since 2018?s Q4 and year-on-year.

The areas around the light rail stations in Greenville are being built and redeveloped any where there is only a bus line not much is happening this quickly. I know what I signed up for.

Members of the Jersey City Fire Department pulled a body from the Hudson River on Monday, authorities said.

Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione confirmed that a body was recovered from the river, but did not have any additional information or the identity of the person. Police are investigating the person?s death, she added.

Freelance photographer Joe Shine, who was at the scene, said the body was removed from the water near 1 Harborside Place.

In 2015 Jersey City legalized short-term rentals and began collecting hotel taxes. Last year alone, the city collected $1.9 Million in tax revenue from short term rentals.

At the May 8th City Council Meeting, a new ordinance will be voted on that would shut down a large portion of Airbnb?s in Jersey City. Below are some highlights from the proposed ordinance:

-Tenants may not operate short term rentals and apply for short term rental permits, even if you have permission to sublet your apartment on Airbnb
-Full apartment rentals in buildings larger than 3 units will be illegal
-Property owners who live on site in 3 family homes are limited to one Airbnb unit

When community leader Chris Perez invited us to take a tour of the community, we jumped at the chance to learn more about the area?s past and meet a few of our neighbors who are influential in its flourishing atmosphere. On a sunny August day, we began our neighborhood tour and met with our knowledgeable guides at the Richard Street light rail station in Greenville, just a 10-minute ride from Exchange Place.




Chris, an investor and homeowner in the area, acts as a community liaison of sorts, engaging deeply and broadly with people and organizations devoted to positive change. He?s the leader of both the Bayside Park Neighborhood Association and the Berry Hill/Claremont Neighborhood Association and an active participant in a dozen other groups around town. He has a quick smile and an authentic way of expressing his passion for the Southside. It's no stretch to consider Jersey City's burgeoning nightlife ? part and parcel of an enormous economic resurgence throughout much of the city ? as the most robust in all of New Jersey. There seems to be a scene for everyone, from the chic skyline-glancing bars and clubs along the sky-scraping waterfront, to the hipster-trendy spots down on Newark Avenue and around the Grove Street PATH station. And don't sleep on the local favorites in up-and-coming Heights and Greenville neighborhoods, either.

But which bar is the best? We spent more than a month sampling the Jersey City nightlife, hitting more than 50 bars in the process (with a few hangovers to prove it). We judged the bars on ambiance, decor, drinks, food, happy hour specials and more to crown the best bar in the city.

JERSEY CITY -- City officials broke ground on a new affordable housing project that will include more than 200 units designated for low- and moderate-income residents.

On Friday, Mayor Steve Fulop and representatives from RPM Development Group broke ground at the Whitlock Cordage site, a six-and-a-half-acre site which includes five buildings under renovation along with 29 newly reconstructed buildings.
