I used to be involved in the nightlife industry..."no sneakers" is not a dress code in and of itself. They'd be better just saying "smart casual" and give examples like: no gym clothes, jeans must be neat, etc. So someone coming from the gym in sweats and a tank is a no, someone in "fashion sweatpants" and heels and a sequined top would be fine (I hate the idea of fashion sweatpants, but it is A Thing).

Fashion right now is all about mixing ultra-casual stuff (sweat pants, sneakers, jeans) with dressier elements (blazers, sparkly embellishment, heels) so banning individual items is an exercise in futility, and a good way to get accused of discrimination if the dress code is applied unevenly.

It's a unique space because of the soundproofing and the fact that shows stream live on the radio. It's a little less social because you can't talk between bands unless you go out of the performance space into the other room. And yeah, it can get crowded and hot But the shows there are really top notch - well produced, solid acts, etc. I recommend getting there early to get seats (they start exactly on time - again because it's radio).

When I first moved to JC the end of Columbus approaching 78 was not alternate side parking, just zone parking. Those were the days! I'm pretty sure they've closed most of those loopholes now. Sorry OP.

When I need to garage my car I call in a favor with people I know in Bayonne. I just park on their street and they keep an eye out and move my car if need be.

A little big picture perspective - I have worked at 2 Ivy League schools and just accepted a job at a third. I also have worked at a State school. I've taught or mentored dozens if not hundreds of students at this point. My experience is that the bright, motivated, reasonably well adjusted students do well wherever they go, in both high school and college. Whether they were the valedictorian of a struggling public high school or top 25% of a private high ranked one, I don't see a huge difference. I've actually had interns from state schools who far outperformed the interns from Ivys because they just had a better work ethic and professional demeanor.

On the other hand, the kids who don't enjoy school, don't have the temperament for sitting in a classroom all day, etc. aren't going to become Rhodes Scholars just because 3% of their high school becomes Rhode Scholars. I once tutored a failing college freshman who had gone to a 50K/year boarding school, who had the social skills of about a 6 year old and no academic motivation or interests. The 50K would have been better spent on occupational therapy rather than Latin classes or whathaveyou.

So, if your kid is bright and motivated, they will probably be fine wherever. It doesn't matter to me if my top students came from Prep, McNair, Snyder, wherever - I'm probably actually a little more impressed by the kids from not-great schools who despite that know how to write well, think critically, etc.

I love Coney Island for how unique (read:weird) it is, but it's a looong train ride (2 hours with transfers) esp. with young kids, and I feel like it has a shady vibe compared to somewhere like Manasquan.

Tried offering him food & water many times, blankets too. But he always wants money or he wants me to buy him alcohol from the liquor store. Said no to shower offers etc. I want to catch him when he's sober so he won't refuse my offer to help. During the "storm" & "emergency closing" days, a cop said this guy is habitual homeless & they wouldn't help him because he would go from the hospital right back to the streets.

That's Tony aka the Fisherman. He's been on the streets for years. You're not likely to be the one to convince him to do otherwise. He's a sad case but not a danger to himself or others generally, so legally it's his right to live on the streets. I'm not saying that's the right thing but that's the reality.

I am reassured that while "large drinking pen" spots like Biergarten and Surf City may attract a "bad Jersey stereotype" crowd sometimes, that the Tilted Kilt did not even appeal to that demographic in large enough numbers to stay open. Personally, I think if you're going to oogle women, you should just be honest about your intentions and go to a strip club. At least the women get better tips there in exchange for being objectified. Food service is a brutal enough professional without mandatory T&A dress codes.

Tried this place Thursday. It was busy but a few tables open at around 7 PM, got seated right away. I'm not a fan of communal tables generally (always get seated next to someone with a Fran Drescher voice somehow) but I get that it's a "thing." Also giggling at this place being the 3rd or 4th this year to do the exposed lightbulbs thing (grove kitchen and porta being the others). Artisanal lightbulbs anyone?

Anyhow the food was very, very good. It's like upscale americanized dim sum comfort food. Had the Mc Bao which was clever and delicious. Loved the steamed "bun" texture with the crunchy acid of the pickle and the fatty savory pork. Probably my fav. (also tried the pork dumplings and spring rolls).

Service was very good esp. for a newly opened place - they clearly hired people who know food service.

Price point is about $8-15 for dim sum dishes, $20-35 for entrees - if you prefer traditional dim sum you will think it's overpriced. If you realize they've created an alternate reality version of dim sum that's intended to be more "upscale," you'll think the price is pretty fair.

Yeah the name is a farce at this point, a marketing gimmick more than reality. I know there are some artists at 150 bay but the heart of the creative community is not in that area any more. All of the JC arts events I attend are elsewhere, only exception is the open studio tours.

"reasonable" is very relative. Jersey City is cheaper than NYC but more expensive than, say, Bayonne.

I second the recommendation of Xtina at Shampoo. She is a talented colorist. With ombre especially you want someone who knows what they're doing or it goes from looking effortless and naturally to tacky and try-hard real quick...

They changed the menu, there will still be tacos but also what seems like comfort food/creative junk food (bacon wrapped hot dogs, chicken breaded with cinnamon toast crunch). Not dissimilar to the Lucky 7s menu - bar food with a twist that hits the spot when you get the drunken munchies (or any kind of munchies). I didn't try anything but it looks interesting.

I think it's a REALLY good move for them to focus on live music esp. with lamp post closing and White Eagle sounding more and more like a pipe dream.

For those who don't get the hype...Scanlon has been part of the JC scene for a while. He's pretty well connected within the arts scene (hence why they have $$$ worth of Piersanti art on their walls). He has definitely been trying to cultivate more of a community arts space than a traditional restaurant. It looks like now they're trying to up their game in terms of both the restaurant and music/culture aspect.

Re: Bayonne vs. The Heights
#18

Bayonne is cleaner, quieter, and more small town than the Heights. That is pretty much the good AND bad of it. The Heights has way more potential in terms of art, music and food culture evolving within the next 5-10 years. With Bayonne that's more like a 15-20 year potential. But this may not be important in your decision making.

My favorite areas of Bayonne are around Hudson County Park, and downtown near 4th St and Kennedy. Keep in mind that the quickest commute to NYC from Bayonne will be from uptown (40th+) which is not the prettiest area of the city IMHO.

P.S. I grew up in Bayonne but if I were looking to buy right now, I'd pick the Heights. I think it's a more diverse, interesting place to live and it's much easier to take advantage of downtown JC and NYC from there. Bayonne is awkward to get in/out of quickly by car or transit and I think that promotes a bit of a townie mentality.

Wow, I don't know who is behind this "artist initiative" but after seeing This Post I have two thoughts:

1. Your organization's promotional art is really...not attractive (to my eye) and more importantly does not appear professionally done.

2. It's also needlessly confrontational (giving "F" grades to galleries, even if deserved, is not great marketing)

3. I am not an artist or curator and even I know the difference between street art and graffiti

4. Bashing EITHER street art or graffiti is foolish if you are an "artists initiative." They are some of the most visible and accessible (literally) forms of art right now.

The pricing will correct itself, or it won't. If it doesn't, it means that it's not "over-priced".

I think it's a bit more nuanced - sometimes I'll pay more for a product not because the price reflects the *quality* per se, but because it's convenient (i.e., along my commute vs. a 15 minute car ride away). Sometimes products that are charging above market rates are really well marketed and people essentially pay more for the "cache."

Look at the juice place across the street from this place. Lots of people preferred to pay $6 for a larger, fresh squeezed juice at Nature House around the corner, instead of a smaller $8 pre-bottled juice at JuiceWell. If they had chosen a spot where they were the only juice game in a ~.5 mile radius, maybe the convenience would have justified the higher price point for more people. Or maybe they could have had sexier marketing somehow. There are other ways besides lowering prices to make a product more appealing.

Exclusive bus lane at Columbus and Marin?
#25
Home away from home
Home away from home

According to a traffic cop working the intersection of Columbus and Marin, the left lane is now exclusively for buses, and car traffic that wants to make a left turn must use the middle lane. The problem I've seen is that cars don't seem to follow this rule and use/turn from the bus lane anyhow. So if you try to comply and turn left from the middle lane you now have two lanes turning left and needing to merge into the single lane of Marin Blvd, which is a ripe condition for accidents.

Does anyone know the actual laws on this? In Newark there is an exclusive bus lane near penn station that is marked with lit signs indicating when it is bus-only - a red X for bus only, and a green arrow for cars + busses during off peak hours. There are also cones marking the lane so it's impossible to miss that it's a "special" lane. There are none of these markers on Columbus - in fact it only says "Bus lane" painted on the street once you're already pretty close to the intersection.

Anyone else noticed problems with this implementation, or know who to contact for me to voice my concerns?

This. I believe nearly all major credit cards (visa, amex, mastercard, etc.) will dispute a purchase for you if the merchandise was defective and the store won't take a return, as long as there is no explicit policy stating otherwise (i.e. if it was a final sale item).

It's also helpful if you want to get a less common brand/vintage of spirit and don't want to drive around looking for who has it in stock.

The signage on the glass makes me chuckle. It's something like:

BAGELS

COFFEE

at least that's how I remember it. And it's called "the coffee shop" but it appears to have two bars. It's like something out of one of those dreams you have where nothing makes sense. "Dystopian dreamscape" is actually another name that appeals to me more than "the coffee shop bistro wine bar speakeasy."

It is a huge mixed bag in terms of clientele/atmosphere on the weekends (when I am apt to go). I've been there when the crowd is mostly artists and there's a drum circle, another time there was some sort of professional mixer with a lot of suits, other times it's pretty clubby with a DJ spinning hits and a dance floor. I wish they had a schedule like "Friday - salsa night, Saturday - 80s night" or whatever so I'd know what I was walking into any given night. A few times I've brought friends there hoping for a chill atmosphere, maybe have a few drinks and talk on the back patio, only for us to turn on our heels and leave because it was more like a packed nightclub.
