I totally forgot about the marigold-tomato thing. I suppose I should find myself some marigold seeds or plants before my tomatoes start to come out.

I figured being in an urban area, on a rooftop with no gardens anywhere near, these little bastards would be slow on the attack.

Man, was I wrong.
the garden store by the exit from the Holland Tunnel has these containers that are completely overflowing with live ladybugs. It's kinda gross actually, since there are so many ladybugs in there, they start crawling over the dead corpses of their lady brethren. But if you want a quick infusion of live ladybugs to kill off your aphids, that's a good place to go! No shipping time, no breeding time, no nothing!

Get this. They will swarm all over it, carry it back to the nest, and be dead really soon. I've used it in 3 different houses when I've had ant problems, in bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens. Always works amazingly

You can get it at Home Depot (though this link is for an entire case)

Because there wasn't a single police officer escorting the convoy. Got nothing to do with "papers" so don't act offended.

In the video above of NYC, there is obviously a police escort and police are directing traffic. There was no such thing in JC.

Totally unauthorized political parade/convoy yesterday?
Home away from home
Home away from home

I think it was for a guy named Danilo? Don't know what he could have been running for, but there was a convoy of at least 50 vehicles blasting music on Newark Ave yesterday, setting off car alarms, complete with a towed platform with people dancing.

I didn't see any police so I know it wasn't planned with the city. Don't you have to get some kind of authorization for something like this? They weren't running lights and they were being pretty courteous to people crossing the street, so I suppose it could have been all OK, but it seems odd to me that you could amass an army of vehicles to have what seemed like an impromptu parade, and not get any sort of approval from the city for it.

It's ridiculous how hard it is to get a state ID these days. My girlfriend had an easier time getting a passport than she did getting a New York state ID.

And when I went to get my license renewed recently, they didn't even bother to mention in the letter mailed to me that I'd need proof of address and secondary IDs and all sorts of other crap. Soon it will be impossible to get any ID in this country, and nobody will be allowed to vote.

hmm maybe they had to come to an agreement with Shoprite not to or something?

When I had a membership to the BJ's on Rt 17 by Lyndhurst, they've got wing, spirits, and cases of beer. Haven't been in the one here, tbh, since I discontinued my membership a while ago.

Who said full service is going away? My elderly mother doesn't like pumping her own gas and she has no problem finding full service station near home (in VT which has a fraction of the population density as here).
really? I have driven across this country so many times and can't remember ever once finding a full-service station anywhere else.

Its faster to pump your own. The cheaper full service stations often have only one or two attendants. You often have to wait to get filled up and pay.
it's a little faster to pump your own, but personally, I'm never in such a rush that an extra minute is going to make the difference.

Plus it really is nice to stay inside in the winter.

That, and there are thousands of people employed because of that law, and it adds a miniscule 4 cents to a gallon.

And really there are so many liquor stores in NJ that I can't imagine it's that much of an inconvenience to anybody.

With supermarkets and stores like Walmart and Target selling everything under the sun now, small businesses like cheese shops, fish markets, butchers, bakeries and the like are going extinct. Now we want to eliminate some more of that and make these superstores even larger? No thanks, I'm willing to walk the 5 minutes to one of the dozens of liquor stores within a half mile of my house.

The liquor license laws are really silly in this state. They are limited by the state, and limited by population.

For a while, grocery stores were buying up all the local liquor licenses in a town so that the only place to buy liquor was in the grocery store liquor store.

Note that now you can't buy liquor from a grocery store -- they are always separate.

Moreover, because liquor licenses are finite, the prices appreciates in value. But the state isn't getting a recurring fee from the license, as happens in many other states.

You think NJ is silly? Go to Utah, or Nevada, or Missouri, or Georgia, or even Pennsylvania. Even NY! Most states in this country have much more ridiculous liquor laws than NJ.

NJ's liquor laws are simple:
Want liquor?
Go to liquor store (for anything and everything)

Compare that to Pennsylvania, our next-door neighbor:
Want liquor?
Go to a bar (if you want a 6-pack)
Go to a beer distributor (if you want a case)
Go to a wine and spirits store (if you want wine or spirits)
Go to god knows where (if you want a keg)
Oh and half the stores are state-owned.

Not to mention the ridiculous rules that every variety of beer ever sold by a business must be registered for a fee with the state or it can be confiscated.

And you think NJ has silly laws?

Some idiot stole my seat and post last night from the Grove St Plaza and I can't understand why! The seat was 5 years old, and was completely busted at the seams. The foam was starting to pop out!

And yes it was quick release, but I had a freaking chain on it! Why would somebody bother with a chain so they could steal a falling-apart old bike seat??? At a place like Grove St Plaza?

And to put the finishing touch on, they cut the strap on the rear bike light as well, so it's completely useless now. Whyyyyyyy.

Where the hell did everyone in this thread see miso/seaweed bagels and rosemary/thyme/whole wheat bagels and all this other fancy stuff? All I saw were regular bagels.

The bagels sucked, btw. They were tough like supermarket bagels. If you're going to name yourself "something Bagel" then maybe your bagels should be better than plastic bag bagels. Don't think I'll ever bother with the place again.

Also should note that the Hudson County Board of Elections website's "Find your Ward and District" page was not working most of this week so I couldn't figure out if my polling place was changed.

Though even now that I'm looking at it, it says I'm in District 14, when the map at Grace Church said District 12, and I wasn't on any of their polling books. Something's not right here.

RENTERS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO VOTE ON SPENDING ISSUES. THEY DON'T PAY PROPERTY TAXES. I'm sick of annual tax increases voted on by folks who don't pay into the system.

NOT FAIR. I say introduce special fees for renter residents who send their kids to the public schools. This way they have a vested interest in keeping costs down too. TAXES SUCK.
ah yes, back to the old system of only allowing landowners to vote. Fantastic idea. If I'm not allowed to vote, then my rent should be half as much, since I shouldn't have to deal with my share of my landlord's taxes.

Went to my normal polling place, and my name wasn't on the books (I guess because of re-districting). Asked where to vote, and nobody knew. They called the board of elections, and nobody picked up. Took them a while and a lot of cajoling from me to just let me cast a provisional ballot. What lunacy.
