Montgomery Gardens Area: Pack of teen boys surround man and beat him with a brick

Some may face trial as adults in murder

Friday, March 06, 2009
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Eight 13- to 17-year-old Jersey City boys charged with beating a man with a brick during a robbery are expected to face felony murder charges based on an autopsy done yesterday that determined the man died as a result of the beating, officials said.

"A number of these juveniles could very well be subject to removal to the (Superior Court) Criminal Division, where they will be treated as adults," said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio of the boys charged in the Feb. 24 attack on Carlos Orlando Quinones, 27, of Monitor Street.

In family court a juvenile faces up to 10 years in custody for the offense of felony murder, but if convicted as an adult in criminal court, the charge carries a sentence of 30 to 75 years, officials said.

A witness told police that on the night of the attack Quinones was walking at Cornelison Avenue and Florence Street at about 8 p.m. when he was surrounded by a group of boys. Police said that when Quinones resisted, he was beaten in the head with a brick the boys found nearby.

Quinones was left in critical condition and in a coma at the Jersey City Medical Center and it was days before police were able to identify him. He never regained consciousness and died on Tuesday.

Doctors also found a bullet lodged in Quinones' neck. Officials said the bullet got there when Quinones was 13 and a childhood friend fired a gun by accident.

Tips led to the arrests of the eight boys last weekend and they were charged with aggravated assault, robbery and various weapon charges, DeFazio said, adding that a ninth boy is expected to surrender.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Is there a pack leader who gets all the goods? Does he have a brighter coat and shiner bling to attract the females?

Sounds like Fagin & Company in a scene from Dickens' Oliver Twist.

Daisy's back in warm home with her owner

Friday, March 06, 2009
By CHARLES HACK
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

Missing for five days after employees with Jersey City Animal Care and Control dumped her in Lincoln Park, Daisy, a 2-year-old cat, has been reunited with her owner.

Daisy was returned to Morgan Metius after Jersey City Chief Animal Care and Control Officer Joseph Frank trapped the kitty in the west end of Lincoln Park Wednesday morning using mackerel as bait, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.

Metius is overjoyed.

"When I saw her (Daisy) I was ecstatic," Metius said. "I was doubtful at first because they brought another cat before. I didn't think with the cold weather I would see her again."

Metius said Daisy had lost some weight around the ribs and seemed a little angry at her about her ordeal.

"She's been sweet but a little bit hissy," said Metius, who adopted the cat from Liberty Humane Society when she was a kitten.

Against city policy, the two animal care and control officers released the cat in a wooded area near Joseph J. Jaroschak Field on Friday, officials said.

After picking up the cat, which had strayed onto a neighbor's property, the city employees should have taken the cat to the Liberty Humane Shelter, officials said.

Daisy was found Wednesday at 6 a.m. in one of 15 traps that was set across the park, officials said. Morrill said a veterinarian examined Daisy and determined she didn't need medical attention before she was returned to her owner.

Metius credited Kensington Avenue resident Robin Pinkowitz with helping the city to carry out the search.

Both control officers have been put on desk duty, officials said.

Morrill said both employees would be suspended, but that when and for how long hasn't been decided.

"We are pleased that Daisy has been returned to her owner and that this concerning incident had a happy ending," Morrill said.

5th guilty plea in 'heroin mill' prosecution

Friday, March 06, 2009
By MICHAELANGELO CONTE
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

The last of five Bronx men charged in connection with a high-volume "heroin mill" in Jersey City has pleaded guilty to maintaining the drug production facility where three pounds of heroin and $9,488 were seized, officials said yesterday.

Joseph Agramonte, 34, of the Bronx, also pleaded guilty on Wednesday to drug possession with intent to distribute in connection with the drug production facility at Clinton Avenue and Sackett Street that was raided in August 2007, New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram announced yesterday.

When Agramonte is sentenced on April 24 the state will recommend he serve 14 years in prison with no chance of parole until he serves at least half the time, officials said.

Also charged in the probe were Rafael Richiez, 28, Lenin Torres, 24, and Pedro Torres, 22, officials said, adding that each has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy and drug possession with intent to distribute.

Rudy Torres, 35, pleaded guilty to the same charges as the other three and will face 10 years in prison when sentenced on April 9, officials said.

Inside the third-floor apartment police found enough heroin to put out "many thousands of individual doses," officials said.

They also found thousands of packs of packaged heroin with the logo "DOA," as well as chemicals and other items used to process the drug, officials said.

The investigation leading to the arrests was conducted by the New Jersey State Police and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, officials said.

Okay, my bad perhaps. The American Humane Association paints a different picture nationwide where an estimated 70% of cats entering shelters are euthanized.

I took home two fosters from LHS who were nearing their 1 year stay at the shelter. When I felt the second one I took home (on Thanksgiving, because he never had Thanksgiving) was ready to go to a home, I sent him to an adoption event at Petsmart through LHS and he was adopted that day. The other foster is going to be adopted by me. There are a lot of happy endings at LHS. Our ZooToo affiliates are living proof.

For the most part, most of our cats are adopted before their year stay. I always wish the best for these cats and dogs that come through our doors. My heart goes out to all of them, and we do our best to give them the attention and care they deserve.

I'm extremely happy that Daisy is home. I lost my first cat for a 24 hour period and it was an absolute nightmare. He was collared with ID, but he was just out roaming through yards. He came home when he was hungry. I was about 8 years old, and I must have cried for the entire time he was missing. I can't even imagine how my parents felt at the time. Let's just hope that this never happens again.

Thanks for correcting me, and thank you for your good work.

I have observed countless numbers of feral urban cats who do not appear to be "miserable." Also, who am I to judge whether the quality of a cat's life is low enough to justify killing them out of a righteous sense of mercy? If you let their own nature be your guide, they obviously want to be left alone.

I would rather not kill them nor would I prefer to have somebody else do it for me, but that is exactly what awaits most cats taken to shelters. You can bet your ass that I would not take a cat I believed was feral to one. How inhumane or unethical is that?

Heat Pump vs Gas boiler: 8 unit condo
Newbie
Newbie

The ancient oil boiler in our 8 unit condo needs to be replaced and we are exploring the options.

Electric heat pumps have been around since the 80s and don't tend to work well in places with sustained cold such as JC. But there seems to be some buzz about gas fired heat pumps.

I know oil prices are low now and I guess a lot depends on future prices (personally I think they're going to go up susbstantially) but I was wondering if anyone has strong opinions for or against gas fired heat pumps?

Cheers - Johnny

in my opinion, as i've said before, as long as people continue to move to JC, build condos and apt. complexes and business continues to boom in JC because of it's close proximity to NYC, the crime problem will never be fixed. people obviously don't care much about the crime if they're continually moving into JC/investing here. the almighty dollar/NYC access trumps the crime problem in JC........why else would all of you live here?

"yeah, there's crime, but it's soooooo close to NYC".....

because of this, the city's money will continue to be spent on things other than crime fighting.

The money was included in the $787 billion stimulus package President Barack Obama signed into law last month.

NJ Transit plans to use the money for various projects, including a planned train tunnel under the Hudson River, rehabilitating its bus fleet and building a transfer station in Pennsauken so River Line rail riders can connect with trains for Atlantic City.

High-level platforms to allow access to Plauderville station in Garfield for people with disabilities. $15 million.

Pedestrian and traffic circulation improvements around Newark Penn Station. $17.3 million.

New switches on Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line. $15 million.

Rehabilitation work on the Lower Hack Drawbridge, which carries Morris & Essex lines to Hoboken. $30 million.

Signal improvements to the Morristown Branch, allowing for improved operations of the Morristown line. $25 million.

New bus shelters throughout state. $2.5 million.

Yvonne,

Yes you are right it will be interesting to read followup articles.

It is also interesting IMO that the Jersey Journal reporter who wrote this article on the rally entitled "Candidates:Politics of crime stats stirs public" dated March 4,2009 is also the same author of the Jersey Journal article dated February 2,2009 "Property tax bills not as bad as you think".

A few days later on February 6,2009 there appeared in the Jersey Journal a editorial titled "Don't expect load will lighten later".The editorial quoted the article of February 2,2009 and asked Really?.The editorial finished with "Yes,the tax bills are as bad as you think. To me this refutes the previous headline.

Yes I agree it will be interesting to read the continuing coverage of what transpired at the rally as well as events to come.

Re: Cutting Down Crime

Our current Mayor had his chance and Failed on Crime!

It is great to see the citizens of Jersey City rise up against crime. This cannot be a one time City Wide Public Safety Rally. We must have more across Jersey City. Our elected officials along with the Police Chief must be held ACCOUNTABLE.

In addition us as citizens of Jersey City must get involved to help the police. Now Healy says he promises to increase police on the street, typical campaign rhetoric, what about they years Healy has been in office.

Why was there not more police put on the streets, why was he not addressing the crime issue, hell, he would not even admit there was a gang problem, saying in the newspaper, Jersey City did not have gangs running around, no less even admitting there was a crime problem.

All he would do is give statistics. He did not have to address the crime issues because he has the Mayor's job already. What are we getting now, a campaign promise that will end up being broken if he is re-elected. When the Mayor jeopardizes public safety he is not fit to run the city.

I don't want to hear it about budget problems, ect, and we can't hire more police. The number one concern must be public safety for a city to flourish, that being said you find the money to hire more police, you appoint a police chief that knows how to motivate, deploy, utilize his police force, along with implementing strategies to successfully fight crime.

Healy has had the privilege of being our Mayor and failed us on the crime issue. He can throw out all the statistics he wants, people do not feel safe period. It is time to take that privilege away from Healy.

No matter who is elected, we must hold them Accountable on the crime issue. If they are not getting the job done rallys must be continued to be held until they get the message and get the job done.

The Mayor works for us!

Cutting Down Crime
Newbie
Newbie

Here?s my theory in cutting down crime in the city. The more cops you have on post should all have quick access to vehicles so that they could converge to the location much faster as oppose to responding on foot in order to protect the public safety and to arrest the actor or actors while they are still in the act or still within the vicinity. I believe that Quick Response Time (QRT) is the Key Factor in Fighting Crime in Jersey City. The more police vehicles on patrol will actually do the job. Police on foot patrol is great if the crime is taken place right where they are but most of the time that is not the case.

The strangest story I ever heard regarding ghost is from one of my friends that has seen a ghost that looks exactly like him a few times in his house on Columbia ave in the Heights. He claims the ghost looks like a real person and not see through like in the movies. That is just creepy to me.
