On Saturday, July 20th, thousands from the Tri-State region will make their way to beautiful Liberty State Park, NJ for the 6th Annual City of Water Day Festival. City of Water Day is a FREE day of entertainment, education & adventure for the whole family celebrating the potential of our waterfront!
Take a FREE trip from Governors Island over to one of the most magnificent waterfront parks, Liberty State Park! It is the only opportunity you will have this year to do this!

We are recruiting volunteers to assist with the events at Liberty State Park. Volunteers are integral to the success of the event! All volunteers will receive a free lunch (vegetarian option available) and t-shirt!

There will be a morning press event at Governors Island and at Liberty State Park with local elected officials, government agencies, and community leaders. Volunteer roles include greeting, staffing the press and sign-in tables, ticketing, helping document what happens, and acting as the public face of the event.

Are you a person who loves water activities? Get the most out of your City of Water Day experience by helping at the water’s edge. Be a City of Water Day Deck Hand. This work is rewarding and energetic and embodies the water experience. We need people who are willing to get their hands dirty and wet! We are looking for folks to hold deck lines for both small and large historic boats, assist the dock master and ensure the boats dock and load their passengers safely, stabilize kayaks, help carry kayaks, assist paddlers getting into and out of the water and in general working at the kayak dock on Governors Island. Kayak tour guides will help professionals give kayak tours and will be out on the water. You must love the water and not be afraid to be hands on and at the water’s edge, active and engaged. The docks are an exciting place to be on City of Water Day!

I'm all for (free) comedy shows close to home, but this one is tough. Last time I attended, the manager/owner was in the back of the room trying to encourage us to laugh more when the content was falling flat. Hopefully it was an off-night, but the whole thing felt very awkward.

Pro Arts Jersey City is bringing back the Art Eat-Up, a community-funded artist grant program. Proposals are being accepted until Sunday, June 23 and the event will be held on Wednesday, July 10 from 7pm to 10pm.

Pro Arts Eat-Up is a grants process that gives an artist an unrestricted financial resource to realize a visual arts proposal, whether it is for one piece or an entire body of work. The grant may provide materials, equipment or even living expenses while the artist completes the project.

Art Eat-Up is grassroots funding at its best: donations for the community dinner go directly to funding art-makers whose proposals draw the most votes from the diners. The process is purposely simple: Anyone can submit a proposal to Arts Eat-Up. Community participation in the grant selection process is the key: through this process we hope to stimulate and support experimental, critical and imaginative projects that may not be eligible for formal funding.

Art Eat-Up connects artists with artists, artists with the community, and the community with each other during Art Eat-Up dinners. It provides artists the opportunity to begin marketing their work before it is made. It creates momentum and awareness for art projects promoted during the event and possibly realized with the help of the Art-Eat-Up grant.

Proposals Deadline: June 23rd, 2013

Special Pro Arts Eat-Up Guidelines to include Eco-Arts submissions in Partnership with Sustainable JC:

SJC has chosen a series of Innovative Demonstration Project sites - the emerging Five Corners EcoVillage, a vision we share with St. Pauls Lutheran Church and The Big Sky Project Five Corners EcoVillage District, as well as one each of the City's college and K-12 campuses and a municipal park to kick off the campaign. It may be useful to consider these venues in submitting your project proposals.

Community & School Gardens, Open Spaces, Streetscapes and Private / Municipal locations are opportune for Eco Art Installations that can create sustainability awareness for the public, help remediate environmental concerns and positively impact cultural development.

Finalist proposals will share a September exhibit with the Pro Arts Curators Exhibit at the new downtown Victory Arts Projects Drawing Rooms and may be awarded additional monies via pending grant proposals and a planned Fall funding campaign for this SJC initiative.

JC Fridays is coming back tonight!

The citywide festival of free arts events is celebrating its eighth anniversary with almost 45 events. This installment of the quarterly event includes art exhibits, musical performances and more in Greenville, Downtown Jersey City, Hamilton Park, the Jersey City Heights, Journal Square, McGinley Square, Newport, Paulus Hook, the Powerhouse Arts District and Van Vorst Park.

Note: Due to tropical storm Andrea, Christine Goodman, executive director Art House Productions, the nonprofit arts group behind JC Fridays, says some events may be canceled or postponed. Evening events are currently expected to proceed as planned since the storm is expected to pass by late-afternoon. JC Fridays officials will announce postponements or cancellations today at 4:30 pm. Here are some highlights to check out today:

Greenville

Project Greenville, located at 128 Winfield Ave., presents “Rooted Abstract,” an installation created by Darin DeField and Nuradeen that will be on display all weekend. DeField is known for his work inspired by the African diaspora and Nuradeen (full name Farah Nuradeen) is a fine artist who was also the brains behind the eponymous Nuradeen Gallery.

“They both have some pretty amazing work and I look forward to seeing what they have in store for our unique space!” says Project Greenville founder Elizabeth Deegan.

The show will be on display all weekend, from today, June 7 through Sunday, June 9, from 3 pm to 7 pm. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, click here.

Downtown Jersey City

In “Me and My Shadow,” acrylic painter Enrico Gomez (whose work “Press Play and Record” is seen above) mixes abstraction and typography to break down the geometry of letterforms and other symbols. The longer you look at his colorful works and the way his shapes play off negative white space, the more you see.

Curator Brendan Carroll says, “At first glance, the paintings present a presumably arbitrary arrangement of shapes—quadrilaterals, hexagons, octagons, etc., But on second and third viewing, his colorful, unruly polygons, seemingly encased in cozy white fields, begin to shift up and down, side-to-side, as if they have ants in their paints.”

Gomez’s work can be seen at the Majestic Theatre Condominiums, located at 222 Montgomery St., and will be on display through October 30. During JC Fridays, today, a reception will be held from 7 pm to 9 pm with light refreshments. For more information, click here.

Hamilton Park

The Gully Hubbards is an Americana band, and they’re also coincidentally a melting pot. With members from the Heights to Bergen-Lafayette and from their 20?s to their 50?s, the quartet smoothly mixes rock, pop, folk, country and a dash of R&B on their debut EP, “Every Moment.”

Guitarist and singer Ace Case says their age diversity and unique vocals make them stand out. “We have three- and four-part harmonies, we combine the male and female voices…Most rock bands aren’t bothering with that these days. In that way we owe more to our country roots, or harken back to the great vocal groups of the 70?s like the Mamas and Papas or Fleetwood Mac.”
