Politics & Government:: NAACP chapter president Kabili Tayari letter: Who will serve the kids best?
Tayari letter: Who will serve the kids best?

By The Jersey Journal
March 10, 2010, 2:00PM

Jersey City NAACP chapter president Kabili Tayari, who released a statement blasting Gov. Chris Christie's appointment of former Jersey City mayor Bret Schundler to be the new state education commissioner, says it was not an attack. Tayari also serves as a deputy mayor for the City of Jersey City.

This is not an attack.

In 1989, Gov. Thomas Kean appointed me to the Jersey City Board of Education, I served until April 1997. During July 1996 until July 1, 2001, I served in the administration of then-Mayor Bret Schundler. Jan. 1, 2000, I began my term as president of the Jersey City NAACP while Bret Schundler was mayor.

Based upon (1) the Feb. 23 letter to the editor from Michael Meyers and (2) the March 2 letter to the editor from former Mayor Gerald McCann, who is a member of the Jersey City Board of Education, there has been a lot of confusion and misunderstanding and misinterpretation about the NAACP's position on the nomination of Schundler for state commissioner of Education.

Before I continue, the New Jersey NAACP embraces Schundler's nomination. The statement released by the Jersey City NAACP branch is not an attack on Bret Schundler or a violation or breach in the NAACP's policy.

First and foremost, the statement released opposing the nomination of Schundler is based upon a lack of education background, little or no education experience, and little or no formal academic training in education. This is the position of the Jersey City NAACP and the New Jersey State Conference of NAACP Branches.

The Jersey City Branch of the NAACP followed the bylaws, constitution and policy of the NAACP and consulted with the president of the New Jersey State Conference of NAACP Branches.

Mr. Michael Meyers reported inaccurately that I and the Jersey City branch had not followed the bylaws, constitution and policy of the NAACP. Third, this was not an attack (partisan, professionally or politically) upon Bret Schundler.
If the press release from the Branch was printed by the press, it would show that the Jersey City NAACP recommended Mr. Schundler for the position of (1) Banking and Insurance Commissioner, (2) Director of the Economic Development Authority and (3) the Commissioner for the Department of Community Affairs.

Furthermore, from New Jersey Department of Education Commissioner Hespe to the nomination of former Mayor Bret Schundler, the NAACP and others have raised the concern that nominees for the commissioner of Education should have a thorough background and expertise in education based on the crucial foundation of the education of all children has upon our city, county, state and nation. Qualifications and experience of any nominee or appointee for the development of the minds of our children is always the principled priority.
New Jersey has a number of failing schools. The issue is not school prayer, vouchers, or charter schools, but policy for the implementation of a thorough and efficient education for all public school students.

March 1, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously released Schundler's nomination as Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education. But it did so without recommendation, which has no partial effect other than for senators to express less-than-full confidence.

Sen. John Girgenti, the vice chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, stated he is not convinced former Mayor Bret Schundler's "vision will provide the best public education in New Jersey." Let us not forget that at least 1.5 million public school students from Abbott districts comprise at least one-third of the New Jersey public school students and are not receiving a 21st Century quality education and equitable funding.

Therefore it is written, Matthew 25:40 and 45 "Verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
The Abbott children are the least of these!
This is not an attack on Bret Schundler but a polemic on who has the best holistic vision to implement a thorough and efficient education for all the children of New Jersey.

KABILI TAYARI
PRESIDENT, JERSEY CITY NAACP

Crime & Safety:: Jersey City police officer is charged with bank fraud - falsely claimed first-time home-buyer
Jersey City police officer is charged with bank fraud

By Joe Ryan/The Star-Ledger
March 10, 2010, 10:29AM

NEWARK -- A Jersey City police officer was arrested today by the FBI and charged in federal court with bank fraud for allegedly lying to secure a roughly $530,000 loan, authorities said.

Brian Ragauckas, 36, of Secaucus, falsely claimed he was a first-time home-buyer in 2008 when he applied for a loan from Countrywide Bank to buy a three-family home in Jersey City, authorities said. When asked about his house in Secaucus, Ragauckas said he was renter, not an owner, authorities said.

But Authorities said the 11-year police veteran bought the Secaucus property in 2000 and was paying the $513,700 mortgage, authorities said. The officer defaulted on the Secaucus home last year, authorities said.

When interviewed by the FBI, Ragauckas admitted lying about the mortgage because he feared otherwise the bank would deny him a loan for the Jersey City property, authorities said.

Ragauckas appeared for a brief hearing in federal court in Newark, where U.S. District Magistrate Judge Mark Falk released him on $200,000 bail and ordered him to refrain from gambling. When asked why, Ragauckas' lawyer, James Patuto, did not elaborate.

"None of these allegations have anything to do with his job," Patuto said.

A Jersey City police spokesman did not return calls seeking comment.

The bank fraud charge carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Faye Schwartz.

Maybe someone could sell another spinoff from 'Extreme Makeover'.

I'm going to try this place in the future but I def. agree the front of this place needs a makeover. The gates and that big metal box thing in front of the store make it feel very unwelcoming even somewhat dirty. They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but when you are dealing with selling food perception sometimes becomes reality!
