Kushner v. Fulop: Inside the collapse of Jersey City tower project deal
JERSEY CITY — It was April 2009 and Mayor Jerramiah Healy was seeking re-election.
Healy and other city officials gathered outside a vacant lot in Journal Square, a site they promised would soon be home to a massive, two-tower development, the first skyscrapers in the city's center. The property was in a prime location, directly next to the Journal Square PATH transportation hub.
The project represented "a great step forward" for Jersey City, Healy said.
Four years later, Healy was again seeking re-election, this time facing a challenge from Councilman Steve Fulop. At a debate in the Journal Square Loew's theater, Fulop noted that there had been zero progress on the still-vacant site.
