I would be very careful eating anything grown in open lots in Jersey City. Chromium, and other contamination is widespread due to industrial ore tailings and by products being given to people for free decades ago to be used for fill, for landscaping.
I had a garden when I lived in town, but all in raised boxes, with commercially bought topsoil.
What I've read on the subject is that fruits, any seed carrier, are very poor at taking up heavy metals, but leaves are much better. Why you get far more iron in spinach than tomatoes. I have raspberries, grapes, kiwis, peaches and figs in the ground, in addition to container crops.
