Description April 27 at 6PM

There is no better way to pay tribute to Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral in the wake of the fire that badly damaged the 850 year old landmark than by enjoying film versions of its eponymous book, which was written in part as call to help save the Cathedral when it was threatened by neglect and decay in the 19th century.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo is a story of human imperfection, piety, cruelty, jealousy and doomed love set in France’s late Middle Ages and played out with a large cast of colorful characters, including the Cathedral’s misshapen bell ringer – all with Notre Dame as the principle background. Indeed, the Cathedral is itself a kind of character, a supreme symbol for France and the eternal.

On April 27 at 6PM, the Loew's Jersey will present what many consider to be the best of all film versions of Hugo's masterpiece: 1939's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" starring Charles Laughton in one of his most iconic roles.

It will be screened in 35mm.

$10 Adults / $8 Seniors & Kids ($2 of the ticket price is a donation to the fund established to restore Notre Dame.)

It was certainly Laughton's most demanding role in that it required him to wear heavy and hot makeup during a particularly hot Hollywood summer in order to create the Hunchback's deformities, even in several rather physically challenging scenes. Yet despite the physical grotesqueness of the character, Laughton's performance is incredibly nuanced, making his Hunchback not a monster but rather the character who is most easy to empathize with. Incredibly, Laughton was not even nominated by the Academy of MPA&S for his work here.

The movie also stars a young Maureen O'Hara in her first American film -- she had been brought to Hollywood by Laughton for the role. And Thomas Mitchell has a supporting role; it's worth noting that in what is often hailed as the greatest year for Hollywood movie making, 1939, besides his role in "Hunchback", Mitchell won an Academy Award as best supporting actor for "Stagecoach", and had major parts in "Gone With the Wind", "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" and "Only Angels Have Wings".

The 1939 "Hunchback of Note Dame" is also notable for striking cinematography and also for some of the most elaborate and realistic-looking sets of its era.

And at 8:20PM, the 1939 version will be followed, with separate admission, by the legendary 1923 SILENT version with LIVE organ accompaniment. Combo pricing is available to see both films. The 1923 film will be screened in a digital restoration.

If you do stay for both, it will be a rare chance to compare the widely acclaimed sound and silent movie versions of the same story, back to back.

Tickets for our classic film screenings are not sold in advance. But don't worry -- the Loew's is a VERY large theater, so everyone who wants a ticket will be able to get one day of. The Box Office will open about a half hour before the start of show.

At the Landmark Loew's Jersey Theatre, 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, NJ (201) 798-6055 www.loewsjersey.org. Email: loewsjersey@gmail.com www.facebook.com/landmarkloewsjersey/

We are located directly across JFK Blvd from the JSQ PATH Station with trains to New York & Newark’s Penn Station. Close to NJ Turnpike & Holland Tunnel. Discounted off street parking in Square Ramp Garage.

The Loew's is a place where the great movie going experience is still alive -- a classic movie palace, a 50 foot wide screen, and a real pipe organ for entrance music before most shows! And whenever possible, screenings are still in 35mm.
