JC Ukulele Meetup
Like playing the ukulele, or interested in picking one up? Want to practice your skills and jam with others? Come join us at the monthly Jersey City Ukulele Meetup!

We mostly do strum-alongs, with the occasional solo number and shop talk. If you have a song you'd like to do as a strum-along, please bring extra copies. And if you don't currently have a uke of your own, just let me know; I can bring along a couple extras.

JC Studios is right down the block from the Grove St. PATH station. We'll be in Studio #2. RSVP at http://JerseyCityUke.Club ...which redirects to our group on meetup.com; if you don't want to use them for some reason, you can e-mail me instead. Thanks!

CVM Presents Sarah Nelson Craft in Recital
Sarah Nelson Craft returns to CVM’s stage with a program featuring major, lengthy vocal works that present women’s stories from their point of view: Robert Schumann’s “Frauenliebe und leben” and John Harbison’s “Mirabai Songs”.

One of Schumann’s truly iconic song cycles, “Frauenliebe und leben” chronicles the love story and life of a young woman, who takes on very traditional roles of wife and mother. While the poetry is not very progressive, it was unique in its time for delving deep into the mind of a woman and telling the story from her perspective.

“Mirabai Songs” is a setting of ecstatic religious poetry in 16th-century India by woman poet Mirabai. When her husband was killed in a war, Mirabai refused to die on his funeral pyre, as was the custom. Instead, she left her family compound, wrote her poems to Krishna, the Dark One, and sang and danced them in the streets.
