St. Michael Singers Epiphany concert "This Hallowed Season" Winard Harper presents Steve Comity
Ringing in a new year of the popular “Meet the Artist” series is a Jazz vocalist with an interesting story to tell: Steve Cromity. An original New Yorker, as a little boy, Steve Cromity lived right above the famous Jack’s Bar & Grill in Bed-Stuy, from whose juke box the sounds of Coltrane, Miles, and Nina seeped into his soul forever. Playing drums in senior high, it was Eddy Jefferson’s vocalese he discovered in his early twenties and further influences by Oscar Brown, Jr., Johnny Hartman, and Billy Eckstine made him aspire to becoming a Jazz singer. A dream deferred though. While Family life and a long and rewarding career in Public Administration took the forefront, the music was there all the while and finally over the last few years, Steve has been able to make his voice heard and presence felt on the New York Jazz scene. He has performed at many of New York’s top venues, including Birdland, Smoke, Cleopatra’s Needle, Kitano, Lenox Lounge and Jazz 966, with many of NYC’s finest jazz artists, Paul Beaudry, Kenyatta Beasley, Richard Clements, Bruce Cox, Patience Higgins, Alex Layne, Marcus Persiani, James Weidman, and Eric Wyatt and has two CD releases to his name. At Moore’s Lounge, you’ll enjoy a Jazz vocalist who delivers beautifully smooth, melodic phrasing of jazz standards that mean something to this day and age.
